I f Dr. King Was Alive Today?By Sindy Howell-Stewart

MartinLutherKingwerealivetoday,he’d havemanyissues toaddress.Majorityfallingunder hisvision foreveryone.

Butfirst of

all let’s keep in mind he would havebeen, turning 82 yrs old Jan 15th.

What does that mean?  Absolutelynothing.  He’d still be a human rightsicon. One of America's most influentialleaders.

Let me also add he would have beenour first African America President yearsago. Not to take

Anything away from Obama, becauseall things happen the way Our Good Lordordered, so that’s just “Food for thought”.

Topping the list of many topics he’d beaddressing:

The current issues of Southern Sudan. If you haven’t heard much about this,

that’s because it’s not in the public eyethe way it should be.  The upcoming ref-erendum on Southern Independence fromSudan has divided black Americans inter-ested in affairs on the African continent, pitting African

American Muslims against blackChristians. Some want to call it LouisFarrakhan vs.the Rev. Al Sharpton.

Are you aware that this Sunday about4 million Sudanese in the war-torn south-ern part of the country will go to thepolls-to decide if they should remain apart of Africa’s largest country

Or become the continent’s newestnation. For black Americans, there aretwo conflicting.

Currents in the issue of SouthernSudan.  There is a strong religious affini-ty on one side; On the other, a strongsense of racial unity.  “They, (we) maywell be on the verge of the worst civilwar of the decade.”

This had to be brought to my attention, and a opportunity to bring it to yours, Icould not pass up

Please, Read more on this athttp://www.theroot.com

This issue clearly falls under us “over-coming”, and being “free at last”-

You may recall Martins ‘Where do wego from here’ speech?

Google it. It covers topics such as,Depiction of Blackness and NegroContributions,

Basic Challenges, Developing aProgram?, Commitment To Nonviolence,About Communism,

And his conclusion statement endswith -

"We have overcome, we have over-come, deep in my heart, I did believe wewould overcome."

Have you “Overcome”?  Are you Freeat last”?  Can you hear me now?

If Dr. King was alive in the 21st Century, I believe that thisnation wouldn’t be in the state that it is. I cannot fathom thatthe Blacks would be so disunited as a people. He led throughexample, and would of galvanized not only the Black faith-based communities but others to stop the spread of drugs inlow-income communities; challenging men to value God andthe institution of marriage. When Nelson Mandela becamePresident of South Africa, he ended apartheid. Dr. King wouldhave developed a global dream that would of created a culturethat held God’s values as the guidelines not man’s. He wouldhave been a global Ambassador, not just for one people. Godcalled Dr. King and man killed him. Dr. King in the 21stCentury???? Things wouldn’t be how they are.”

By Cheree AllenIf Dr. King was alive today I believe that a lot of things

would be different.  I think we would be living in a differentworld than what we do today.  We were a different peopleback when he was alive.  Our people believed in change, believed and supported each other and believed in them-selves.  Today we are a lost people!  Some of us do exactlythe opposite of what he fought for.  Why are we killing eachother?  Why are we not supporting our businesses?  Why arewe not trying to keep his dream alive and live right?  Theanswer is simple!  It's because we stopped believing!

We've accepted life as it is!  We've given up the fight! Many of us don't even talk to our children about who Dr. King was and what he triedto do.  Why? Instead they hear a watered down version of who he was and what hedid.   Do you realize that our history has gotten lost because we don't spread the wordof our ancestors?  President Obama says it best, "Change will not come if we wait forsome other time.  We are the one's we've been waiting for.  We are the change that weseek."  So, what are we waiting for?  We want to make a difference in the lives of ourchildren and our children's children.  We need to get up off our butts, vote, believe, support, love, acknowledge and appreciate all of what our ancestors tried to accom-plish.  We need to walk in those things that not only Dr. King believed in but what ourpeople believed in.  Stand up and take back our communities, live the lives we weredestined to live, and not settle for what or who we've allowed ourselves to become!

I f Dr. King Was Alive Today?

As the college football season came toa close on Monday night with Auburntaking their rightful place as the BCSNational Champions, led by HeismanTrophy winner, Cameron Newton, I satback and reflected on the unbelievablefootball that was played by many teamsthis season with a smile. However, Icame home from work to view a story onthe lack of equality in how athletes andcoaches are treated in regards to race. Itreminded me that 25 years after MartinLuther King, Jr.’s birthday was made anational holiday, we still have not pro-gressed far enough. In Division I CollegeFootball, 46% of the student-athletes areof color, while only 10% of the headcoaches are non-white. Surprisingly, thenumber of African-American AthleticDirectors at these institutions of higherlearning is slightly higher at 16%.Nevertheless, when you break down thenumbers, the statistics don’t lie. Duringslavery, the slave masters bought and soldthe biggest, strongest, and fastest slavesto work the fields. Likewise, the coachesand athletic directors, buy and sell(recruit) the biggest, strongest, and fastestslaves (athletes), to work the fields (playfootball on Saturdays). The slaves gotthe scraps to eat and to sleep in the slavequarters. The athletes get to eat at thetraining tables and live in the athleticdorms. The slave masters got rich off thebacks of the slaves. The coaches, athleticdirectors, universities, and the NCAAespecially, make millions of dollars eachseason off the backs of the athletes. Inreturn, the athletes get a scholarship. Dothe math and “Run Black Man Run”!

The slaves got beat and separated fromtheir families with no remorse.Sometimes they were killed for trying toprotect what was theirs. Likewise, theathletes get suspended, or lose their eligi-bility for securing any personal gain fromtheir own efforts. A prime example ofthis is the 2011 Sugar Bowl. Ohio Statehad 6 players that violated master’s(NCAA’s) rules and are facing suspensionfor the 1st 5 games of next season. If therules are truly that important, then thesuspensions should have been enforcedimmediately for the bowl game. But waita minute…that could mean a loss in rev-enues. “So get your black butts out thereand make me some more money” saysthe slave master. “After I have used youup, and gotten even richer off you onceagain, then I will suspend you duringthose early games against meaningless

opponents to start next season” he adds. But like the slave masters of old, and

prior to the Civil Rights Movement, whodid not disguise their true intentions, theNCAA and the CEO of the Sugar Bowl,in no uncertain terms, told us, it is aboutthe money! These hypocrites come downon the athletes for simply wanting to geta piece of what everyone else is makingoff them. All of this came about becausethey sold some trophies, rings, and jer-seys that they earned and belonged tothem. So, let’s get this straight. TheNCAA, the universities, sponsors, evenvideo game companies can sell your like-ness, jerseys with your name on the back, videos of your highlights, and anythingelse that you did on the field, and makemillions. But if you make a dime of themoney for yourself, your name is draggedthrough the media mud, you get suspend-ed or possibly lose all eligibility, andgiven your walking papers? Well, “RunBlack Man Run”!

I don’t know about you, but I find thisto be a disturbing truth. I would almostbe ok with the NCAA if they were con-sistent. You look at the Cam Newton sit-uation; or the situation involving the OhioState players, and the E.J. Green situationat Georgia. In addition to those three sce-narios this season, there have been count-less other high profile cases of improperbenefits being accepted by college ath-letes over the years. When it happen, thesame question comes to mind. Why is italways the black athletes? Are you seri-ously telling me that in all these years, nowhite athletes, at any of these schools, have received improper benefits? I knowfor a fact they do and here is the proof. For those that remember the Oklahomapowerhouse teams of the mid-late 1980’swill remember Brian Bosworth. You maybetter remember him for getting ran overby Bo Jackson on the goal line in thatinfamous Monday Night Football gamebetween the Raiders and Seahawks.Anyway, I remember him writing a bookless than a year after leaving college talk-ing in detail about all the corruption thatwent on at Oklahoma and how he cashedin from it. I respect him for being boldenough to tell it, but I cannot respect theNCAA for its lack of consistency at thattime, since then on how they deal with ahigh profile white athlete versus a highprofile black athlete. In closing, I want toapologize for being on hiatus for so long.Happy New Year…and Run Black ManRun!

Run Black Man Run!

For those of you that have followedthe saga of Park 6 over the past fewmonths and felt it was all over with therevoking of their liquor license, hold onthere’s more to come.

A due process hearing resulting in astrong recommendation by City Council'sPublic Safety and Licensing Committee, that the Park 6 Club licensing would beyanked, was recently held.

The proceedings initiated by the com-mittee were based on an unusual com-plaint filedby theRacinePolice ChiefKurt Wahlen, against thepopulardowntownhip-hop club.

TheRacine CityCouncil voted in accordance with thecommittee. The two African-Americanswho sit on the Council, voted against themeasure.

Thomas Holmes, owner of Park 6, 500Sixth St., and his attorney, Vincent Bobot, are seeking an injunction against the city.Holmes says he wants his license backwhile a Racine County Circuit Courtjudge reviews the city's decision. Thehearing has not yet been scheduled.

Holmes hopes the courts ruling willbe granted and he will be allowed toreopen. Until then, he can't sell liquor at

his establishment, but can keep runningthe business as a dance hall.

In the meantime, a number of ques-tions have surfaced to whether or notHolmes’ due process hearing was carried-out legally and fair.

Holmes and his attorney has com-plained that the hearings should havebeen stopped immediately after it wasdisclosed that Wahlen had not sworn tothe complaint.

The Insider News requested a copy ofWahlens’ com-plaint andnotices that itwas preparedand notarizedby the cityhired AttorneyKennethRusch. Thismeans that thecity had

already hired a prosecuting attorney priorto receiving a complaint from Wahlen.Holmes says the city has showed a pat-tern of rushing to close his businessdown. “They had already made plans totake me to due process before they hadreceived a complaint from the Chief,”explained Holmes.

During testimony, Wahlen said that hewas acting not as the Chief of Police, butas a private citizen like you and I. Ifthat’s true, then why did the city hire anattorney to assist him in drawing up the

complaint? By phone, Holmes says the city has

become outright blatant in their racism inan attempt to drive African-Americansfrom downtown.

In a candid remark, Rusch said, "We'renot putting Park 6 out of business, but it'stime to take away its liquor license."

This weekend in an attempt to save hisinvestments, Holmes opened his club toprivate parties for college students.

“After taking my liquor license, thepolice department is resorting to harass-ing my patrons in order to close me downcompletely,” said the angered Holmes.

He said that at closing time andthroughout the night, police sit near hisplace. In addition to placing a police nui-sance van near his place, officers stoppatrons, checking ID. The van is usuallyused at locations where there are expect-ed drug dealings.

Holmes says, “It is unfair for thepolice department to place a negativestigma on my business when nothing isgoing on but people enjoying them-selves.” He added that the police depart-ment has complained that too many man-hours are taken up at Park 6. How theyhave chosen to park squad cars outsidethe club through-out the night. “It’s as ifthey are trying to build a paper trail inorder to lynch me,” Holmes suggested tome.

Holmes said that the ‘Willie LynchSyndrome’ is unfolding before your eyes.“They want to break me and other minor-ity business owners downtown the sameas you break a mule. They want to stopAfrican-Americans from having thecapacity to take care of their needs and

the needs of others in the community. They want to break minority businessesfrom being independent from them andthereby create a dependency,” heexplained.

“It does not matter that my businessprovides 16 part-time jobs, that Park 6contribute to the economy of the city, andthe money that’s derived in my businessstays in Racine,” said Holmes. “All thatdoes not matter when you are man break-ing and slave making, that’s Willie Lynchin its true form.

As always we look forward to hearingfrom you and hearing your comments.Send your comments to: [email protected].

Racine County was awarded one of 17 Transitional Jobs Demonstration Grants fromthe Wisconsin Department of Children and Families in September, 2010. The grant ispart of federal stimulus dollars funded through the American Recovery andReinvestment Act (ARRA).

The goals of the program are two-fold: to stimulate the economy by assistingemployers to be able to bring in additional workers to meet their workforce needs at noadditional cost; and to provide paid employment and skills training to job seekers thatmeet program guidelines.

The program, implemented in September, is designed to provide “time-limited,wage-paying jobs” that combine real work, skill development and supportive services.“Our goal is to provide up to six-months, 40 hours-a-week combined wage payingemployment and training opportunity for 52 transitional job slots to eligible RacineCounty residents,” said Christine Henning, Program Coordinator. Selected participantsattend a paid two-week orientation devoted to training and coaching on work relatedtopics included but not limited to work readiness, financial literacy, how to get andkeep a job, and mock interviews. Transitional Workers are then matched with a work-site where they are employed for up to six months, earning a minimum of $7.25 anhour.

The program utilizes for-profit, non-profit and public businesses that have a will-

ingness to provide training to Transitional Workers. All costs are covered through thegrant’s funding, and employers are not required to retain a participant at the end of thetransitional job placement. At the same time, Transitional Workers gain skills training,a positive work history, a work reference and a paycheck.

To date two groups, totaling 33 Transitional Workers, have participated in a two-week Orientation and 31 are now working at Transitional Job worksites. One employ-ee was hired after just five weeks into the Transitional Job! Some employers are trulyembracing the program and adjusting their training according to the skill levels and/orinterests of their Transitional Workers. Many of the Transitional Workers will be con-sidered for permanent positions at their employer worksites, given availability andtheir performance.

Entrance into the Transitional Jobs Program is through a competitive applicationprocess. Applications for the third round will be available on Monday, January 17 atthe Workforce Development Center, Resource Room located at 1717 Taylor Avenue,Racine. Completed applications are due on Friday, February 25 at 5:00 p.m.Candidates must meet all program eligibility requirements.

Employers interested in hosting a program participant can log ontowww.wdc.racineco.com to learn more and submit an application, or call (262) 638-6431.

The weather was cold and snowy, but the spirit of Dr. Martin LutherKing Jr. was very much alive and warm during the 20th Annual Laying ofthe Wreath Ceremony held at the base of the Martin Luther King Statue inRacine. Elected officials, Pastors, leaders, and over 200 Racine Unifiedstudents gathered together in unity to honor the Civil Rights leader.

Barney Nelles, a retiree from Family Service of Racine, shared thatthere is a need to continue Dr. King’s work. He said, “We are here todayto continue that struggle, and recognize that each one of us must do what-ever we can to change so that we can work for peace and justice in ourcommunities, so that we can deal with the issue of racism, the issues ofpoverty, the issues of education, the issues of immigration, and realize thateach of us has a role to play.”

In addition, Maria Morales of Voces De La Frontera, stated that manyof the laws that were used to oppress African Americans are now beingused against Hispanic immigrants and she was critical of the decision by

some law enforcement agencies not to collect racialinformation on traffic stops.

The ceremony ended with the students placing awreath around the Martin Luther King statue andeveryone singing “We Shall Overcome” to inspirehope and courage to fulfill Dr. King’s dream.
