We asked Frances Gentle, Lecturer in Vision Impairment

One of my favourite books is the audio version of “Dreams from my father” by Barack Obama. This autobiography was written in the early 1990’s when Obama was elected as the first African-American President of the Harvard Law Review. He was prompted to write the book following the death of his father in a car accident in Kenya.

“Dreams from my father” interweaves Obama’s American, African and Indonesian family story with the broader societal issues of race and prejudice that have been a constant throughout his life. Obama’s reflections and insights touch upon the strengths and frailties that are present in all families, and the love and loyalties that tie families and communities together.Obama recorded the audio version of “Dreams from my father” in 2004 when he was an Illinois Senator. It is remarkable to me that he found the time to record his autobiography as this was an intense period in his life when he was spearheading legislative reforms to the death penalty, police interrogations and racial profiling in Illinois.

Whatever was the motivation, I have thoroughly enjoyed listening to his sonorous voice and his use of a range of “voices” to represent his American and Kenyan parents, grandparents, and extended family.

Margaret Allen, chair of the National Year of Reading founders and State Library of WA, explained, “The Reading Hour itself is for everyone and there will be activities for all age groups, but there will be a special message for families. The phrase ‘10 minutes a day, an hour a week’ is our ‘slip, slop, slap’. It’s the take away message that we hope will become the accepted norm. We know it’s not always possible for parents to share a book at bedtime with their children, but if they can manage 10 minutes most nights, their child will have the best chance of becoming a good reader, with all the social and educational benefits that brings. Most of our brain development happens between birth and three years of age, so it’s not enough to assume that children will learn to read when they get to school. Parents need to share stories and rhymes right from day one – and a good way of finding out more is to join storytimes, rhymetimes, baby bounce and toddler sessions at your local library.”

Key partners for The Reading Hour are Dymocks, The Walt Disney Company and Dymocks Children’s Charities. Together, these three partners have exciting plans for activities beginning in the first half of 2012 and leading up to the big day on 25 August.

In addition, Scholastic Group will be promoting The Reading Hour through its search for reading superheroes (www.scholastic.com.au/minisites/readingsuperhero). MS Readathon will be running a special “60 minutes for MS” event on 24 August, and Kumon (http://au.kumonglobal.com/) will be organising Read Together groups in public libraries for students and families from multicultural backgrounds.

The Reading Hour is nominally 6pm to 7pm on 25 August, but events will be happening all day, to avoid or coincide with important sporting fixtures and venue opening hours, and to accommodate the different time zones. Events will take place in libraries, bookstores and other public places.

BackgroundNational Simultaneous Storytime, now in its 12th successful year, is organised by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA).

Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. In 2011 over 170,000 children at over 1,100 locations across Australia took part in National Simultaneous Storytime, reading the book Feathers for Phoebe, written by Rod Clement and enjoying a range of supporting educational activities designed to promote the value of reading and literacy.

National Simultaneous Storytime is an important annual national literacy campaign that guarantees more young Australians will ‘Get Reading’. This year, reading takes place on Wednesday 23 May at 11am AEDT and we would love it if you could join us by sharing The Very Cranky Bear by Nick Bland, a wonderful Australian tale about friendship, sacrifice and learning that appearances aren’t important.
