CO-ORDINATOR’S REPORT Welcome to the first Co-ordinators report for 2012. This year is moving fast and the planning for our Kingaroy is well in hand. Included in this newsletter is a basic rundown of the weekend, mainly due to the self catering requirements of this rally. It will be pay as we go and we would like all attendees to please confirm their presence on this run as it will be starting at different points, picking up people as we proceed to Yarraman for lunch. We also need to know how many will be joining us for the lunch in Yarraman so the people there can organise enough food for our visit. Thank you to all who attended the Car Inc. Birthday run to Toowoomba. It was very well attended and showed the other member clubs the enthusiasm abounding in this group for this era in motoring history. I would like everyone to please have a think about where you would like to visit for our next weekend run. And also where the next Easter rally might be. There is a day trip planned for the next Car Inc. Meeting at the David Hack Day car show in Toowoomba on Sunday, May 6th. And the Darling Downs Veteran Vintage Motor Club Petrol Consumption Test is on the group Calender for August, Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th. Any further thoughts on locations and volunteers to organise these runs will be very much appreciated. Bear in mind also, the AGM is the 1st weekend of July. Last year for our AGM weekend, we had a 2 day run, staying overnight at Toogoolawah, and attending the local pictures. And a quick note from the Dating Officer. Feel free to call me to get your vehicles dated for Concessional Registration; I’m quite willing to travel to your location. The new Queensland Heritage Motoring Council form is up and running now so give me a call whether you’ve finished your restoration or just misplaced your renewal notice! Hope to see you all in Kingaroy for another great Easter rally. Alex Allum, Group Co-ordinator and Dating Officer.

EDITORIAL STUFF... This edition of Moto Media contains the story of Chris & Terry’s 1929 Dover. They kindly shared some photos of various stages throughout the resto. We look forward to seeing it out and about on runs. There is an outline included of the Easter Rally, not only over the 2 days in Kingaroy, but also, travelling to and from Kingaroy, & meeting points along the way. More information will follow shortly. Please contact Alex or Wendy to let them know not only your travel plans, but also if you are attending this event. Peter Wilkinson supplied some great photos of the Harrisville run last November. Unfortunately they arrived in my email inbox a day after I had sent out the Newsletter. I have included a couple in this newsletter. The nice thing about looking over photos from past events is remembering what great days these are and all the fun we have on our runs. Peter & Glenys have also recounted their travels to Bathurst to attend the NSW Hudson Presidents Run and pick up some parts. The event was cancelled due to flooding and heavy rainfall in the area. Story & pics included further on in this Newsletter. It was very nice to see Hedley & Barbara back on the road again after experiencing a bit of engine trouble on our last run. The culprit was a big end bearing, and Hedley had it repaired and the Buick was back on the road in 3 weeks. Alex has been busy lately with dating duties, one of which was the Smith Dodge. Very efficient filing saw the rego lapse, a case of out of sight, out of mind. A quick trip to the local QGAP office, and it was sorted. Just waiting on new plates to arrive. On the subject of the Dodge, it is now “house trained”; a leaking water pump was also fixed, along with rear shock absorbers re-conditioned. We had a good drive in it to Toowoomba. I was very impressed with having wind up windows, being use to the tourer. On the way home I got a bit carried away, and like a kid, had to wind the window all the way up and down, just to try it. The sudden gusts of wind saw the temporary rego label come lose, fly around the car and straight out the said window. The look from my driver said it all. Guess these windows aren’t all they’re talked up to be! See you in Kingaroy (I’ll be in the Tourer!)

Regards, Janet

Dover Restoration

Chris Fagan & Terry Wickman have recently completed the resto on their 1929 Dover (pictured on cover). The restoration was started many years ago by Chris’s father, Bill Fagan of Ipswich. Chris says, “Basically, the story of the car is - My dad, Bill Fagan, bought the car from a guy at Churchill around 35 years ago for $350.00 and whilst he had it, stripped it down to bare metal, did the clutch, brakes & radiator and various other things, so we had a good base to work from. When he had the time to tinker on it, he didn't have the money and when he eventually had the money, he didn't have the time. Terry & I bought it on 29th October 2011 to keep it in the family. With the help of people like Spencer, Barry Ash, Bill, the trimmer & Dave Manderson, auto electrician / mechanic and a lot of blood, sweat and tears from Terry, the little truck was finished on the 6th January 2012.

President’s Weekend Bathurst 2012 (NSW Hudson group) – Unfortunately this event was cancelled due to weather. However Peter & Glenys Wilkinson were also making the trip south as they had some parts to pick up. Here is their story: Our trip from sunny Queensland started Thursday morning from The Gap, Brisbane in our 1991 Tarago GLX with a 6 x 4’ trailer for picking up parts.... Thursday was a fine sunny day for our run down the New England Hwy to Tamworth where there was a shower overnight. Things started to become interesting when our GPS took us west from Willow Tree to Merriwa on the Murrurundi – Merriwa Rd which became dirt, wet and mountainous. Having survived this, we were back on track on the bitumen Golden Hwy to Mudgee declining the GPS route via the Goulburn National Park (no caravans on the map) dirt road. We were just past Ilford (south of Mudgee) late Friday morning when Tony called and spoke to Glenys (road closed before Bathurst – did not get to say the run was cancelled). At Running Stream we stopped for lunch, tried calling Tony and sort road information. Just a bit further south we picked up some wooden wheels at Ben Bullen (from Jeff Fripp). The phone and radio reception was poor in the hills however we heard that the road to Bathurst would close at 2:30 pm. After trying to cut through Portland and finding the road was closed we eventually arrived at Bathurst at 3:07 pm. We saw Wayne F. in his Hudson Coupe heading home on the Great Western Highway after his short visit to Bathurst due to the rally cancelation. By the time we unpacked at the Charles Sturt Uni Motel and returned down town for petrol, the road was closed. (see attached video clip of our crossing the flooded road on the Kelso side of the bridge over the Macquarie River.) Brooke took good care of us and set us up for another breakfast in case we had to stay 2 nights. On Saturday we headed to Cowra after checking road reports and a quick lap around the wet Mt Panorama circuit in the Tarago (trailer and all). Forrest’s Elbow was exciting even at slow speed – I can see why Dicky Johnson and Skaife got into trouble there. After picking up the wire wheels for the Essex (& Model A Ford wire wheels for another eBay shopper) from Larry near Cowra we attempted to plan our route via Parkes to see the Curteis (thanks Tony for the contacts) however this meant going further west via Forbes to avoid other road closures. We decided to head home by the shortest route. This proved wise as Forbes later become isolated by floods. After a night at Coonabarabran we were off again dodging potholes on the final stretch home. It was a good road trip of over 2,300 km although we did not see any NSW club members – however we called in on Spencer & Wendy in Rosewood on the way home to pickup a replacement tyre for the one on the borrowed trailer that we blew just short of Boggabilla. I am now looking for one or two 20” Essex 1929 wire wheels to go with the ones I just picked up. I can swap one 1927 Essex 21” wire wheel. (Also looking for a new esky to replace the one I left in the Uni Motel

). What did we learn for this trip? – the Tarago is still a great car, the CSU Motel is a great place to stay although a little far from Qld for the weekend in a modern car, plan your trip carefully when going off highways (do not rely on GPS data completely), and Hudson Essex TNR people are great (we already knew this didn’t we?) Regards, Peter & Glenys Wilkinson
