LOVE NOT WAR . . . On January 13, 2018 a button was pushed in error sending a false alarm of a ballistic missile attack to Hawaii, and advised residents to seek shelter, and "This is not a drill". The governor wanted to warn people by Twitter that this was a “false alarm” but he couldn't remember his password. I am grateful that the Roselani Place Staff that were on duty that day responded with calm and compassion. In this kind of “non-event” running or evacuating would not be effective, and actual injury could happen as a result. After the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962 my Dad decided to build a bomb shelter in our basement. First he used a pick ax to chop through the concrete floor and dug down a couple of feet until he hit frozen ground, and then he gave up. When my mother and sisters asked what we should we do if a bomb was dropped. My dad answered “go down in the basement and lie in the hole”. My teenage sisters were more worried their dresses would get dirty than if they survived and refused the drills. The Bomb Shelter was never finished, and the hole never filled in. I loved the dirt hole because the outside ground was covered in snow, and so I used it for all sorts of games like making dirt roads for my matchstick cars. My mother was disgusted she had to walk around the hole to hang up her laundry, and that the dirt got all over our shoes and we tracked it upstairs. It was also a problem when meter readers or repairman didn’t see the hole in the dim light and fell in. In the hot and humid summer the family dog and I would lie down in the dirt and take a nap. So maybe it’s auspicious that February 16th is Chinese New Year, and that 2018 is the Year of the Dog, an animal which symbolizes luck, and for me unconditional love. So instead of bombs, and since February 14th is Valentine’s Day I will share my favorite quote about love with you. “Seems to me it ain’t the world that’s so bad but what we’re doing to it, and all I’m saying is: see what a wonderful world it would be if only we’d give it a chance. Love, baby - love. That’s the secret.” Louis Armstrong.

Valentine’s Day Luncheon Wednesday, February 14, 2017
Luncheon: 11:30 am - Dining Rooms
Valentine's Day is a holiday celebrated on February 14. Traditionally in the west,
this is the day that lovers express their love for each other by sending Valentine's
cards, presenting flowers, or offering confectionery. The holiday, often referred to
as St. Valentine’s Day, is named after two among the numerous Early Christian
martyrs named Valentine. The day became associated with romantic love in the
circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly
love flourished.
The day is most closely associated with the mutual exchange of love notes in the
form of "valentines." Modern Valentine symbols include the heart-shaped outline,
doves, and the figure of the winged Cupid.
To love oneself is the beginning of a lifelong romance. - Oscar Wilde
