BUILDING COMMUNITY

SHARINGEXPERIENCES

CHANGING LIVES

It takes a community to achieve all of these wonderful milestones! From the hundreds of donors to the thousands of Season Ticket Holders and hundreds of thousands of people who come through the building, the Center thanks you for supporting the power of the arts in our community. You are the ones who help build community, share experiences and change lives all season long.

As a nonprofit arts and cultural education organization we exist to inspire, transform and build our community through exceptional live experiences which go far beyond the stage.

Through providing a home for programs like P.A.R.T.Y. at the P.A.C. and putting on weeklong artist residences like it gets better, in the 2014-15 season we focused on opening a community dialogue about important issues facing many in the Fox Cities.

We welcomed educators to our Classroom Connection teacher workshops and their students into show titles that directly related to the Wisconsin Academic Standards, bringing classroom learning to life throughout Northeast Wisconsin.

This season also brought huge hits like The Book of Mormon, Once the Musical and Dirty Dancing – The Classic Story Onstage. We welcomed our 25th Wisconsin Broadway premiere, A Christmas Story – The Musical, and the Arts Alive! Series included an exploration into Chinese acrobatics, Irish music and through the hottest Leiber and Stoller jazz club in town.

The Keystone Campaign also reached its $25 million goal by the end of the fiscal year, demonstrating the great community support for our mission of serving as a gathering place and providing engaging and educational opportunities to enhance understanding and enjoyment of life through the creation and presentation of the arts.

As you review our highlights we hope you remember 2014-15 as an amazing season and know that the Fox Cities P.A.C. will continue to grow: building the community, sharing more experiences and changing more lives for years to come.

Thank you for everything you do to help us share the power of the performing arts.

SHARING, BUILDING, & CHANGING

BUILDING COMMUNITY

A destination to live, work, play and learnThe Fox Cities Performing Arts Center builds community by serving as a gathering place for world class artists, business meetings and personal events. Presenting the best of Broadway, an array of Arts Alive! programming and top touring artists, the Center attracts patrons from far beyond the Fox Cities. While the Center is often cited as one reason Appleton is a great place to live, work and play, patrons from the Fox Cities and beyond also find it is a great place to learn with opportunities to explore varying cultures, subjects and experiences through the arts.

Engaging our communityThe Center focuses on learning through programs such as community engagement activities, expanding on important topics and highlighting themes of accompanying shows. These experiences add a cultural, educational, informative and dynamic layer to each related live experience.

Community First Community Engagement Activities continue to be popular with patrons and provide a way to partner with community organizations and businesses to deepen the impact of the related artistic experience. In the 2014-15 Season the Center held 88 community engagement activities. That means 73% of show titles had at least one related activity. This series of programming reached nearly 6,500 participants and included everything from lectures and demonstrations to parties and exclusive opportunities with visiting artists. Through diverse events, including a prohibition Gatsby Gala before Montana Repertory Theatre’s The Great Gatsby and ballroom demonstration with Ballroom with a Twist, patrons enjoyed educational and engaging experiences at the Center.

A top stopDuring the 2014-15 Season, the Center earned a fifth spot on the “Top Stops in the Nation” for its size in Venues Today magazine. This recognition means that the Center remains an attractive stop for top artists both from the Broadway circuit and among touring acts, which is not only great for patrons but also helps to boost the local economy. The Center, on average, generates more than $12 million a year of economic activity in the surrounding area by drawing patrons and artists to sleep, shop and eat in the Fox Cities.

The arts help people learn more about the world around them — and businesses have seen the impact (of the Center) throughout the entire year as different shows stop at the Center. There’s impact beyond just the performance.

MAKING THE ARTS ACCESSIBLE

SHARING EXPERIENCESEach year the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center partners with several area organizations to broaden its impact in the community. From spreading the power of the arts to providing a gathering place for powerful messages, the Fox Cities P.A.C. prides itself on being a key hub for the community.

During the 2014-15 Season the Center was home to ThedaCare’s P.A.R.T.Y. at the P.A.C. program for the tenth year. The program has been able to educate an entire generation of new drivers, thanks in part to the Center’s ability to seat more than 5,000 students across two days’ worth of presentations each year.

Dr. Ray Georgen, trauma surgeon with ThedaCare explained that the program, which used to be held in the hospital for small groups of health classes, has been able to develop and expand due to the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center’s facility and overall capabilities.

“The audio-visual capabilities contribute to a more interactive and relevant program and today’s drivers face just as many technology distractions as they do peer pressure to consume alcohol,” Georgen explained.

In the 2014-15 Season, students from 35 different high schools across multiple counties came together to share in this life-changing experience. In addition, educators and parents were invited to attend, allowing them to discuss their shared experience at home and in their communities, extending the impact of the presentation.

The 2014-15 Season was also full of valuable community collaborations that brought unique performances to the Center.

Disney FANTASIA: Live In Concert featured the Fox Valley Symphony Orchestra accompanying scenes from Walt Disney’s original “Fantasia” and Disney’s “Fantasia 2000” which were played on a large screen hung above the stage. This unique presentation brought classical music like Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker Suite” and iconic Disney moments such as Mickey Mouse appearing in Dukas’ “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” back to a new generation, a generation who fondly remembers the film and an audience who had a fantastic evening at the theater.

In December, local performing arts groups came together in a big way for a holiday production of The Nutcracker. Makaroff Youth Ballet performed the gorgeous choreography with live music from the Fox Valley Symphony Orchestra and voices from Lawrence Academy Girl Choir. This collaboration highlighted just some of the amazing talent in the Fox Cities.

Being able to bring a car on stage gives a sense of reality as to what actually happens.

Raise your voiceThe 2014-15 Frank C. Shattuck Performing Arts Touch the Hearts of Students, or P.A.T.H.S. program took 15 students from YouthGo, a drop-in Center in Neenah on a unique journey to explore themselves, their talents and what it means to give selflessly based on the themes in Once the Musical. This group of students participated in interactive, hands-on workshops with local artists Nicole Rae and Rob Anthony to discuss the importance of music in their lives, learn the basics of songwriting and music styles and were encouraged to reflect on moments in their lives when someone gave selflessly to them. The students explored music by attending performances of Once the Musical in January and the 20th Anniversary Tour of Danú in March and worked through the spring alongside their mentors to create original lyrics that reflected their life experiences. At the end of the project, Rae and Anthony set the students’ original lyrics to music and select pieces were performed for the participants, their friends and family at an evening celebration to be remembered.

Putting family firstThe Broadway League’s Family First Nights® is a nationwide program that is specifically designed to encourage underprivileged families to attend theater together on a regular basis. For those who participate in the program through the Fox Cities P.A.C., it is also a dynamic, interactive experience that changes the way they look at each show and each other. This season marked the Center’s seventh year participating in the Family First Nights program supported by John and Sally Mielke, in partnership with the Boys and Girls Club of the Fox Valley. In the 2014-15 Season, families participated in three unique extension activities in addition to attending three performances. Before A Christmas Story - The Musical, families enjoyed an ugly holiday sweater gathering, then they toured Rock Garden Studios to learn about the recording industry in the Fox Cities before attending a performance of Once the Musical and tried their hand at Broadway karaoke before a performance of Jersey Boys. Families came away from the program being introduced to the magic of Broadway, while also experiencing special activities that gave participants a deeper understanding of the performance and to create lasting memories together.

Realizing it gets betterit gets better, the YouTube movement turned impactful live production, came to the Fox Cities P.A.C. Feb. 16-21. In partnership with INCLUDE, the Fox Cities’ organization designed to change attitudes about LGBTQ issues, the Center hosted the Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles (GMCLA) for a week-long residency to raise awareness around the effects of bullying. The GMCLA took their message of tackling difficult issues into the community with 15 different activities and two public performances. The cast also visited six high schools to present specifically designed performances that addressed universal issues of inclusion and bullying.

In addition to opening the door for high school students, the cast also held several public events to invite the community to get involved in the it gets better discussion explaining the project and helping to facilitate conversations important to the community such as inclusion, acceptance and tolerance.

These important discussions were cemented with a culminating public performance of it gets better, the stage show which addressed similar topics using powerful music and storytelling.

In the 2014-15 Season, donors helped the Center reach a crucial goal; $25 million in the Keystone Fund made up of multi-year pledges, cash gifts and legacy pledges. This amount reflects 208% of the Center’s operating budget, which falls into the 200-500% amount stated as a best practice by the National Arts Strategies Fund. While still on the low end of that recommendation, reaching this milestone means the Center is on the right track to assure that high-quality live theatrical and educational experiences are available in Northeast Wisconsin for generations to come. The Center continues to seek support for this fund to meet ongoing needs and supplement growth and innovation in the future.

In the 2014-15 Season, 849 Annual Partners donated to support the Center’s mission. These donations, along with grants and other contributed funds made up a total of 13 percent of the Center’s revenue. In 2014-15 that amount was nearly $3.1 million. These donations and grants are what help the Center promote and execute valuable programming that brings together people from all walks of life to experience the power of the live performing arts.
