The museum is transforming, and within that process is a need to examine how our museum will be adapted for 21st century audiences. More than ever, people are technologically savvy, so they actively look for ways to acquire knowledge via online and digital formats. Online video platforms like YouTube, offer an effective tool to build connections with on-site visitors while exploring methods to engage new ones.
Two staffers, Lindsey Munzel and Celia Castro, have sought to grow the museum’s online presence through the creation of two YouTube channels. The official Haggin Museum channel, Digital Shorts, will offer viewers a behind-the-scenes look at the museum, share stories about artists and community figures, and it will give a glimpse into new exhibitions. This
channel launched in January. The second channel, Simply Curious, will launch this spring. It will focus on personalizing the educational experiences for viewers. It will take closer looks at artwork and artifacts, examine aspects of conservation and proper storage techniques, feature curatorial tidbits, and will discuss visitors’ frequently asked questions.

sPECIAL ExhIBITIoN
As this exhibition opens at the Haggin Museum, there will be memorial celebrations throughout the country surrounding the 100th Anniversary of the United States entering World War I (1914-1918), as well as the passing of the 70th Anniversary of the end of World War II. The Haggin Museum is pleased to be partnering with the Reading Public Museum to present CALL TO DUTY: World War Posters. The show opens at the Haggin on April 20th and will be on public view through August 27, 2017.
The exhibition highlights more than 70 original World War I and World War II posters drawn from the Reading Public Museum’s permanent collection. The posters help to tell the story of the massive human efforts put forth during these twentieth-century global conflicts. Displayed in public locations such as post offices, train stations, city halls, schools, and businesses, these war posters and, perhaps more importantly, the messages they communicated, were found everywhere throughout the United States.
The selection of posters explores themes of enlistment; funding of the wars through bonds and other methods; efforts on the home front; such as, conservation and work ethic; campaigns by service organizations such as the Salvation Army, YMCA and Boy Scouts and the role of women in the war effort. Many of the posters are American, but examples from Canada, France, Great Britain and other allied nations are also featured.
Artists such as J. C. Leyendecker, James Montgomery Flagg, Howard Chandler Christy, Edward Penfield, Francis Luis Mora, Jessie Wilcox Smith, and Norman Rockwell, among others, are represented in this exhibition.
This exhibition is a perfect match for the Haggin and our community not only because of the artistic and historical significance of the posters, but also due to vital role our community and the Port of
Stockton played in the war efforts. At the Haggin, you have to look no further than our Willy the Jeep display to see an example of the great individual community role Stockton played in the World War II efforts. This exhibition also includes a war bond poster by American illustrator J.C. Leyendecker. The Haggin is proud to be home to the largest museum collection of Leyendecker’s original works which includes military paintings and a copy of the poster in this exhibition.
We would like to extend a special thank you to the Port of Stockton for sponsoring this
exhibition at the Haggin Museum. During the run of the show you will also have the opportunity to learn a bit more about how Stockton responded to the call of duty and the important role that the Port of Stockton had during World War II.

Born in Málaga, Spain, Pablo Picasso was one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century. He was a painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist and stage designer. For nearly eighty of his 91 years, Picasso devoted himself to an artistic production that contributed significantly to and paralleled the entire development of modern art. La Tauromaquia is a series of 26 aquatint etchings illustrating what was once one of the most important themes of Spanish culture, the art of the bullfight. Picasso completed this body of work in 1957
as an homage to the famous eighteenth-century matador José Delgado, known colloquially as “Pepe Illo.” Picasso’s fascination with the bullfight started when he was a young boy in Málaga. His childhood notebooks from school are filled with sketches of matadors, bullrings and picadors. Picasso’s first painting, created in 1889, was of a matador.

Hospital No. 76 in Vichy, France. Her duties included maintaining records on the dead and wounded soldiers. She wrote letters for those soldiers unable to do so, and organized special occasions, such as Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. Upon the closing of the Base in February of 1919, her commanding officer praised
her “…invaluable…” service.
The Bulletin's cover image is by the preeminent American illustator of the early twentieth century, Joseph Christian Leyendecker (1874-1951). This image was used as the cover illustration for The Saturday Evening Post, March 2, 1918 and as a poster for the Boy Scouts of America Third Liberty Loan Campaign, 1918. Tableaux Vivant, the French saying for 'living picture,' is a style of artisitic presentation when costumed actors/models, are carefully posed to recreate a scene. A Washington, D.C. photographer, Robert Hall recreated this image and photographed these models in honor of Leyendecker's Weapons for Liberty painting.

Washington Street: The Heart and Soul of Stockton's Chinatown
San Joaquin County Historical Museum
East Washington Street, between Hunter and El Dorado Streets, was the symbolic heart of Stockton's Chinatown. This commercial center--the grocery stores, bakeries, laundries, herb shops, gambling halls, and brothels--was decimated in the late 1960s by the construction of the Crosstown Freeway. Through more than 100 photos and stories from residents and thei r descendants , learn the story of Stockton’s once bustl ing Chinatown is told. The exhibit takes you from the origin o f the immigrants, to the early settlements in Stockton, to the heyday of the business district in the first half of the 20th century and, finally, to the demise of Chinatown. Make the short drive to Micke Grove Park. A parking coupon will be included with your itinerary. During your visit, museum staff will orient you to the vast 18-acre historical museum. You will then learn about the development of the Washington Street exhibit and have a docent-led highlight tour. Special feature: A lecture by Dr. George Yagi Jr., UOP history professor, on Samfow, Third City on the Path to Gold Mountain. Enjoy an included Chinese luncheon. Reservations must be received by April 18; no refunds after this date. For more information contact tour leaders Susan Lee (209) 481-0196 or Janwyn Funamura (209) 931-6121. For reservations contact Merylene Marengo (209) 940-6311.

Do you know where this house use to stand in #StocktonCA (since demolished)? It was the house of James A. Stewart, which was
built in 1897 and was located on 1421 N. El Dorado Street. It was designed by the owner who ran a school supply store. At the
time it cost Mr. Stewart $3,800 to build. The beauty of the house was captured in this watercolor
by local artist Mabel Rubin (October 10, 1899 – June 6, 1961). Mable McPhillips Rubin was a commercial artist in San Francisco before moving to Stockton with her husband, Benjamin, in the early 1930s. She did a series of paintings of older Stockton homes as her contribution to the National League of American Pen Women’s efforts to document local history. Her watercolor images with their pen and ink detail capture the variety of Victorian architectural styles employed by Stockton builders. Most were painted in 1952 at a time when many of this city’s older homes were being razed and replaced by businesses, apartments and gas stations

We are proud to once again be participating in the Blue Star Museums program. It is a collaboration among the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense, and
museums across America. Each summer, Blue Star Museums offer free admission to the nation’s active-duty military personnel and their families, including National Guard and Reserve, from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
The show will be opening at the Haggin on April 20th and will be on public view through August 27, 2017.

The United States e n te re d W W I i n April of 1917. Shortly thereafter, Eila Haggin McKee volunteered to serve in the American Red Cross. She was
stationed at Base Hospital No. 76 in Vichy, France. Her duties included maintaining records on the dead and wounded soldiers. She wrote letters for those soldiers unable to do so, and organized special occasions, such as Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. Upon the closing of the Base in February of
1919, her commanding officer praised her “…invaluable…” service.

Through more than 100 photos and stories from residents and thei r descendants , learn the story of Stockton’s once bustling Chinatown. The exhibit takes you from t h e origin of the immigrants, t o the early settlements in Stockton, to the heyday of the business district in the first half of the 20th century and, finally, to the demise of Chinatown.
