2012 Calendar

Nov 8th: Annual Homeowners Meeting Dec 13th: HTPHA Board Meeting Dec ????: Santa visits Holly Tree

Meetings are usually held at 7 PM at

Holly Tree Country Club;; please verify the location by visiting our website, www.myhollytree.com

Again this year, Holly Tree will sponsor the Hobgoblin game in the neighborhood. The Hobgoblin is a game that everyone, young and old, can enjoy. You will be visited by the Hobgoblin, who will leave candy and the Hobgoblin sign at your front door. In order to keep the game going and hopefully cover all of Holly Tree by Halloween, please make 3 copies of the sign and put together 3 bags of candy and visit 3 of your neighbors by leaving the Hobgoblin and candy at their front door. Once you have been visited by the Hobgoblin, place the Hobgoblin sign at your front door so that you do not get visited again.

We will be sending out an eblast in late September, looking for volunteers to start the game.

SUNSHINE FOR HOLLY TREE NEIGHBORS

Everyone can use a little Sunshine in their life, especially if they are suffer-ing from an illness, loss of a loved one, or a injury. As a homeowners associa-tion, we would like to have an opportunity to reach out to our neighbors in their time of need. With the size of our community, we need to rely on those who are aware of another neighbor's hardships so we can send a little Sunshine their way! We have now created the Sunshine Committee. Our goal is simple: send a nice message to a neighbor. We appreciate your help with this act of kindness. Please send us a message to [email protected] if you are aware of a neighbor in need of a little Sunshine!

Your neighbors,

Jennifer and Ian Paradis, Brenda and Bruce Meyer

PARKING - COVENANTS RESTRICTION

Please note that it is against the Covenants (2.14) to park your vehicle on any unpaved areas of your lot. If you wish to provide additional parking space, please contact the architectural committee.

In addition, be aware that on street parking is against state ordinances where it interferes with emergency vehicles. You would hate to be the reason an ambulance or fire truck could not get to either your house or to

your neighbor's. Thank you so much for helping to correct both of these situations.

Got leaves? If you have trees, or if your neighbor has trees, then you have leaves. Many folks regard them as a nuisance. Gathering leaves and dealing with their disposal is the very definition of nuisance work. Hopefully, after reading further, you will see the benefits of keeping your leaves and using them as a cost-effective way to mulch your yard. The solution to the mounds of leaves that cover your yard is to shred them and either pile them up for future use or spread them out immediately. The two best methods for shredding leaves are to use a leaf shredder specifically designed for that purpose or to use a lawn mover that collects the leaves in a hopper. Lawn mowers that bag ground-up leaves offer one way to speed up the decomposition process. The de-composing leaves are a wonderful source of nutrients for your soil. You may not want to use shredded leaves for mulch for every aspect of landscaping. However, shredded leaves are wonderful mulch for natural areas and will continue to improve the soil quality. For formal ar-eas and foundation plantings, you may want to spread a layer of decorative mulch on top of the shredded leaves. Your areas look finished while helping to improve the soil and cut down on the cost of several loads of the expensive mulch. pense of hauling the leaves away. Please note that Holly Tree has no arrangement for disposing of leaves, and that leaves from your trees are your responsibility. Although taking advantage of your free mulch is a better and less expensive method, you may wish to contact your garbage hauler to arrange for disposal.

Butternut Squash Soup with a Kick

Ingredients : Prep Time : 15 minutes

2 tablespoons butter Cook Time : 45 minutes

1 onion, diced Servings : 6

2 teaspoons grated fresh ginger

1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and diced

1 (2 pound) butternut squash - peeled, seeded, and cubed

1 (14.5 ounce) can chicken broth

1 (12 fluid ounce) can evaporated milk

1/2 cup coconut milk

1 tablespoon white sugar

salt and black pepper to taste

1 cup sour cream

1 tablespoon chopped fresh thyme, or to taste

Directions:

Melt the butter in a large pot over medium heat. Stir in the onion, ginger, and jalapeno pepper;; cook and stir until the onion has softened and turned translucent, about 7 minutes. Add the butternut squash and chicken broth, and bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer until the squash is tender, about 30 minutes.

Stir in the evaporated milk, coconut milk, sugar, salt and pepper. Cook and stir 5 minutes more. Pour the soup into a blender, filling the pitcher no more than halfway full. Hold down the lid of the blender with a folded kitchen towel, and carefully start the blender, using a few quick pulses to get the soup moving before leaving it on to puree. Puree in batches until smooth, and pour into a clean pot. Alternately, you can use a stick blender and puree the soup right in the cooking pot. Ladle into bowls, and garnish with sour cream and thyme to serve.

COVENANTS COMMITTEE REPORT - from Pat Ayers

I have joined the Covenants Committee and hope to get up to speed in the next few weeks. For My name is Pat Ayers and I built my

home at 714 Plantation Drive in 1991. Until recently, I owned my own real estate/appraisal firm. I have sold, appraised and even taught real estate over the last 35 years, so I am no stranger to the ins and outs of real estate. This background certainly makes me keenly aware of the necessity of

share in this pride.

Holly Tree is a large subdivision and requires all of us to understand and adhere to the covenants and making sure the covenants are current and address issues that concern us all. Part of my re-sponsibility will be to keep you informed of any issues concerning these covenants that may arise. Today, that concern is the dumping of debris on any of the vacant sites in our subdivision. That violation impacts all of us as homeowners. If we have a build up of debris in any of our areas, visitors considering purchasing a home in our neighborhood turn away because it appears we

have discovered), rats and other undesirable rodents. With the fall season upon us, the leaves and other debris will increase, so we are asking for your help. Please keep a watchful eye on anyone that might decide the vacant site is the perfect place to dump some of their unwanted debris. I know each of you share this concern with me and ask that you please contact me or email Pat Perkins should you witness anyone violating this covenant and we will take the necessary steps to correct this.

ARCHITECTURAL COMMITTEE REPORT

During the last quarter, a significant number of applications for ar-chitectural changes have been received by the committee for installing wooden fences. Article 2.10 of the Covenants and Restrictions provides that the Arch. Committee must approve the construction materials, de-sign and location of any fence. We would like to remind homeowners that under Art. 2.33, the HOA has the right to do anything to maintain Numbered Lots in a neat and desirable condition, and that would include requiring that wooden fences in disrepair be removed or replaced.

In addition, Article 2.14 notes that the homeowner shall install at his expense a suitable paved driveway from the paved portion of the abutting street or avenue with the design, type of material, and loca-tion approved by the Architectural Committee. All proposed driveways shall be specifically shown on a plot plan submitted to the Architec-tural committee for approval. This requirement precludes the use of unpaved areas of a numbered lot for the purpose of continual parking of vehicles. If a homeowner wishes to provide additional parking space, please complete and submit a request for change in accordance with the requirements noted in this paragraph.
