Wouldn’t it be nice if we could see The Beach Boys live in the North East? Well Don’t Worry Baby (sorry...), the band (well, a version of it), is heading to Sage Gateshead. Led by Mike Love from the original line-up, along with Scott Totten, Tim Bonhomme, Jon Cowsgill, Jeffrey Foskett and Brain Eichenberger, the boys are joined by actor John Stamos and will present all their classics, which means Fun Fun Fun and Good Vibrations all night (see what we did there?).Sage Gateshead, £37.63, sagegateshead.com

So Shaky, I hope we can look forward to double denim and white dancing shoes? Not this time. That was a long time ago; every artist needs to be allowed to move on and develop in their own way.

But I like Green Door! Will we still get that at least? You’ll know the songs, of course, but there will be new arrangements and new ways of performing them.

Phew! And what about your new album about your family? It’s not like your old stuff. There are a lot of sad stories, hence the darkness of the album, but it’s been a fantastic experience to make it.

We think you’re cool all over again. Did you expect primetime radio to play your new music? When it was first revealed to the media, our publicist didn’t say who it was. The reaction was fantastic because people didn’t expect it from Shakin’ Stevens.

If you were bursting onto the scene for the first time in 2017, who would you be? I would definitely be more rootsy like this. If you look at Johnny Cash, in the early days he had this really strong beat, but he moved on and his music was much darker towards the end and that suited him.

It’s one of the biggest events of the year and this summer, Discovery Museum is hosting an exhibition to celebrate 135 years of The Hoppings.

The much-loved funfair, held annually on the Town Moor, was initially promoted as a temperance festival to provide an antidote to its drunken predecessor, the Newcastle Races. Today, the fame of The Hoppings extends far beyond the reaches of Tyneside, and show people flock from all parts of the country for Europe’s largest travelling funfair.

The exhibition opens on June 3, with a day of activities and events to tie in with the theme, including children’s fairground rides on the Plaza outside the museum, Carousel Crafts, balloons

discoverymuseum.org.uk

and stickers. As well as exploring the origins of The Hoppings, the exhibition will also look at the travelling way of life of generations of showmen, women, and their families, who bring The Hoppings to Newcastle, including the language and phrases they use such as Flattie, to mean a member of the general public, Gaff for a busy fairground, Gallopers for the carousel and Living Wagon for their caravans.

Visitors will be able to find out about the history of fairground rides from the swing boats, called shuggy boats in the North East, which were among the earliest fairground rides, to steam-operated rides and the waltzer.

A major feature of the exhibition will be more than 50

vintage working amusement machines from the movie What the Butler Saw, to pinball and fruit machines, which visitors can play using old pennies which can be bought from the museum - five old pennies for £1.

The 1880s and 1890s saw the appearance of an array of coin-operated penny machines, including test your strength and fortune tellers, before they disappeared in the late 1970s with the introduction of video games.

All the Fun of the Fair: 135 years of the Hoppings will be on show at Discovery Museum from June 3 to October 1, while the Hoppings itself is taking place from June 16 to June 24.
