The KiMe Fund Raises Awareness and Funding for

a Cure During It’s Annual Shakin’ Not Stirred Benefit

The KiMe Fund held its 3rd Annual Shakin’ Not Stirred fundraiser on Saturday, April 6, 2013.

Over 200 supporters gathered at the Knoxville Hilton for a common purpose – to raise funds to advance research aimed at finding a cure for

Parkinson’s Disease. An estimated 7 to 10 million people worldwide are currently living with the disease and 60,000 new cases are diagnosed each year in the U.S. The event attracted guests from Georgia, Illinois, Michigan, Texas, and Virginia.

Local 8 News Anchor and Sports Producer Mark Packer emceed the spectacular evening, which included special musical performances by Steven Potts & Friends Bluegrass band and the Marquis McGee Quartet. DJ Party Boys provided the rhythmic beats that lifted guests to their feet. Guests also enjoyed both silent and live auctions that resulted in competitive bidding on donated auction items including a Harley Davison motorcycle. All proceeds from the evening will benefit Parkinson’s medical research.

“Our 3rd Annual Shakin’ Not Stirred Parkinson’s fundraiser was our most successful event to date, thanks to the generous support from our corporate sponsors, donors, supporters and volunteers,” said Steve Hodges, Founder and Chairman of the KiMe Fund. “We are grateful for the continued encouragement, as well as the growing interest in helping us to live up to our theme of ‘Care-Contribute-Cure’ by raising and donating money focused on finding a cure for Parkinson’s.”

A Note from Our Founder

As we bring our third year to a conclusion, we have remained focused on the challenge of raising money and donating it wisely. We have maintained our

discipline of building a solid foundation, keeping expenses to a

minimum, and maximizing the dollars we donate toward finding a cure for Parkinson’s.

Our advisory board remains committed and determined to achieve our objective of making a difference to help find a cure, whether that is elimination or earlier detection. Based on what I have learned, I firmly believe this goal is achievable within my lifetime. We must attain this objective so that the next generation will not have to face what PD patients, care givers, families, and friends experience today.

This past year, the KiMe Fund increased our number of Corporate Sponsors; increased our number of KiMe Volunteers (who are critical to hosting successful events); held our most successful fundraiser to date; and made our largest donation to date. None of this would have been possible without the support of my fellow board members, our KiMe volunteers, corporate sponsors, and supporters.

This past April we hosted the KiMe Fund 3rd Annual Shakin’ Not Stirred Parkinson’s Fundraiser. Thanks to our volunteers, corporate sponsors, numerous individuals and organizations that donated auction items (including a Harley Davidson motorcycle!), and guests from six states, we had our most successful event to date. What a great night!

Next, we decided to leverage the extensive vetting process of the Michael J. Fox Foundation (MJFF) and help MJFF support a Parkinson’s research project. The project, which is being conducted by Patrizia Fanara at KineMed, Inc., is focused on finding biomarkers within human cerebrospinal fluid, which if successful, may enable monitoring disease progression and therapeutic intervention.

On the evening of November 5, 2013 representatives from MJFF, Patricia Radford, Associate Director of Advancement, and Haley Askew, Advancement Officer, joined several KiMe Board Members in downtown Knoxville to accept a $25,000 donation. We spent the evening discussing the latest strategies to accelerate finding a cure, what exactly a cure looks like, and the need to keep administrative expenses to a minimum, a commitment both organizations have adopted. With respect to our donation, 100% of the funds will go towards the KineMed research project. It was great to spend the evening with others who share a common passion.

As we look to 2014, we are considering events in Michigan, Tennessee, and Texas. Planning is already underway for our 4th Annual Shakin’ Not Stirred Parkinson’s Fundraiser at the Fox Den Country Club in Knoxville, Tennessee on the evening of Saturday, April 12, 2014 from 7pm to Midnight. Our event will take over the entire first level of the Country Club. The format will be similar to past events with several changes, including a sit down dinner, and in the James Bond tradition of Casino Royale, gaming tables where the highest winners will select from pre-designated donated items.

I think we have accomplished a lot in just 1,460 days. But frankly, we are just getting started. Our Mission continues -- Fund Research to Find a Cure for Parkinson’s. I sincerely hope you will continue to support us in 2014.

KiMe Presents $25,000 Check to MJFFOn November 5, 2013, KiMe Founder, Steve Hodges, close friend Charles Garvey, and fellow KiMe Board Members John Campbell, Dr. Michelle Brewer, Marty Gray, Tim Wheeler, and Leslie McDermott met with Michael J. Fox Foundation (MJFF) representatives Patricia Radford and Haley Askew from New York City. On behalf of the KiMe Board, including Deanna Hatmaker, Jeff Robinette, Eric Brinley, Staci Ferguson, and Joe Siragusa who were unable to attend, and on behalf of all of the KiMe supporters, a $25,000 check was presented to the MJFF to support research focused on the cross sectional examination of cerebrospinal fluid kinetic biomarkers of axonal transport for PD diagnosis and progression. 100% of this donation will go to the designated research with no administrative cost. Wow! What a night. A great opportunity to discuss the latest research and to share our mutual commitment and passion to find a cure for Parkinsons. A very special thank you to all of our supporters that made this possible!

Blueprint 5

Each newsletter, in five questions, we briefly introduce you to the people who are making the KiMe Fund an organization of people who CARE, CONTRIBUTE and are helping to find a CURE for Parkinson’s. In this newsletter, we posed questions to Board Member, Deanna Hatmaker.

Deanna Hatmaker

Outside of work, what are you passionate about?

In addition to spending time with family, I am passionate about serving in my community through various outreach efforts. I enjoy mentoring students, teaching at the university level, fundraising for non-profit organizations and working with others on career and goal strategies. I am an active member in my church and lead the effort to make and donate quilts to national and international groups.

What motivated you to join the KiMe Fund Board?

I have served for many years on various Boards. After hearing Steve Hodge’s compelling mission for the KiMe Fund and how we could leverage my background, I felt excited and saw a clear alignment. I know individuals who have Parkinson’s and believe it is important to raise awareness regarding this disease and ensure the community is coming together to support a cure. I feel so fortunate to have served on the KiMe Fund’s Board now for more than two years and to personally see the large effort underway and the avenues all of us may participate in toward this endeavor.

Qualities I admire in people.

Integrity, personal accountability, empathy, perseverance, continual efforts to improve, and a positive attitude.

What recent book have you read?

I am an avid reader and follow business and political news. One of my most recent books that I enjoyed reading was Harvard Business Review’s book titled, “On Leadership.” This book is a collection of leadership principles from a myriad of recognized thought leaders on how to set direction, motivate others, provide influence, build team confidence, increase self-awareness, and lead from the heart. It is a must read for anyone in a leadership role.

What is your favorite leadership quote?

I have many favorite quotes but one that stands out is “The first responsibility of a leader is to define reality. The last is to say thank you. In between, the leader is a servant” by Max DePree.

KiMe Finances

In order to maintain transparency and ensure donor confidence, we regularly report on the financial condition of the KiMe Fund in our newsletters. This is our financial report through September 2013.

During its first board meeting, KiMe adopted an operating plan targeting administrative expenses not higher than 10%. Through September 2013, administrative expenses were 11.3% of total receipts and revenue for the 9 months year to date.

Donations from KiMe supporters for the first nine months of CY13 were $24,106 and net receipts from special events were $15,485.52, bringing total receipts, including interest income, to $ 39,627.27 through September. On November 5, 2013, KiMe presented a check in the amount of $25,000 to help the Michael J. Fox Foundation fund a specific research project.

In order to maximize efficiency, we constantly look to raise money while reducing expenses. We initially established the KiMe Fund through the East TN Foundation (ETF), a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit. ETF is a terrific partner and has the ability to receive donations and efficiently pay expenses. The administrative expense associated with donations that we direct to ETF is 10%. This is viewed as reasonable given the service ETF provides. We also have an account with The Fidelity Charitable Gift Fund (FCGF), a 501(c)(3) that has very low administrative expenses, but cannot pay event expenditures. The combination of these relationships provides the ability to receive tax free donations, pay expenses, distribute funds, and reduce expenses.

As reflected in the balanced sheet below, the KiMe Fund has assets of $91,955.19.

KiMe Honors Two Outstanding Contributors with Impact Awards

During our 3rd Annual Shakin’ Not Stirred Gala, two outstanding contributors were honored for their selfless dedication and ongoing commitment to the KiMe Fund. An individual contributor Charles Garvey and corporate sponsor Fidelity Investments received the organization’s Impact Award.

Mr. Garvey, a committed supporter since the Fund’s inception, has donated his photography talents and hours of services for all KiMe events and other special engagements. Joseph Siragusa, Vice President and Branch Manager accepted the award on behalf of Fidelity Investments. “Fidelity is honored to receive this award, said Siragusa. “As a firm, we are noted for managing wealth; however, our definition of wealth is not always measured by dollar signs and decimal points, but more through the smiles and laughter of the people and the communities we care about.”

The KiMe Fund appreciates the significant support it receives from its sponsors, volunteers and supporters. The Fund’s efforts would not be possible without individuals and organizations that understand the importance of Parkinson’s research to finding a cure.
