Not Cellulite!!My helicopter crew landed on a frigate in order toevacuate a sick sailor who, we later learned, wassuffering from a skin infection called cellulitis. Whenwe arrived, we asked a crewman what was wrong.Pointing to the stricken sailor, he said,“He has cellulite.”

AttackI overheard two EMT volunteers talking about the timethey went to the aid of an elderly man. As one tookdown his information, the other opened his shirt toattach EKG cables. "Any history of heart trouble?" askedthe first volunteer. "None," said the patient. Looking atthe telltale scars of bypass surgery, the second volun-teer wasn’t so sure. "In that case," he said, "do you

remember when the lion attacked you?"

Better Than The BookIn the front row at the cinema was an old man andhis dog. It was a sad funny kind of film. You knowthe type. In the sad part, the dog cried his eyes out,and in the funny part, the dog laughed its head off. This happened all the way through the film. Afterthe film had ended, I decided to go and speak to theman. “That’s the most amazing thing I’ve seen,” Isaid. “That dog really seemed to enjoy the film.”The man turned to me and said, “Yeah, it is. Hehated the book.”

I took a speed readingcourse and read ‘War andPeace’ in twenty minutes. Itinvolves Russia.

    EVERY SAT. & SUN.AT 12 NOON

Glorious Mud. . .Spring what a beautiful time of year, right? Firstwhile there is still lots of melting snow aroundwe hear the crows visiting amongst themselves. As I pen this article they are carrying on outsidemy window. I almost feel like I'm at a quilting beewith all the racket going on. Then as the groundbares someone is sure to say,

"I saw a robin today." I remember watching forpussy willows, another harbinger of the pendingspring. Usually someone would break off a bouquetof those twigs and grey cotton ball buds and setthem in a vase on the kitchen table. A reminderthey were, that winter was on it's way out and thewarmth and regrowth of spring was fast approach-ing. On the farm itself I can not write any bet-ter then the poet William Henry Drummonddid in his poem ‘The Habitant Farmer’.

"Oh dat was de place when da spring time shees comin,

When snow go away and da sky is all bleu.

When h'ice lef da water, and da sun it get hotter

And back in de medder der sings the Cou Cou.

When small sheeps first comin out on de pasture,

Der nice little tail sticking up on der back,

Dey ron wi't each udder dey play wi't der mudder,

Dey jump all de time jus de same dey was crack.

The old cow also she glad winter over,

She kick herself up and start off in de race,

Wi't da two year old heffer, dats pretty soon lef her,

Why everytings crazy all over da place...."

One of my pleasant farm memories about springthough is mud. Yes you read it right, mud! I'm nottalking about the barn yard being knee deep in asoup mixture of mud and you all know what else.Nor ladies am I referring to the mud we all tracked

    through your houses.

I'm not even talking about the rivers you couldconstruct from mud puddles on the laneway; thensail your stick boats away to foreign ports. (Although that is a very cherished memory.) No I'mreferencing the mud that netted me a handsomesum of money every spring.

Directly east of our farmhouse across the lower fieldwas what we called the side road. It was the bound-ary road between two townships. So I don't know forsure the politics of the situation back then but Ithink the side road got neglected a bit because of nei-ther township wanting to spend money on it. Theside road was in bad need of being raised up andditched along our lower field. Every spring the roadwould fester up with massive frost boils. The localsall knew to avoid the side road until Mother Natureturned on the dryers. The visitors or the forgetful inthe area would sometimes venture into what had

become my trap. I would watch from the yardwith delight as a car appeared past the tree linesand then came to a sudden stop. One wheel ortwo or of all them buried in gooey, suction grip-ping, beautiful mud. Fire up the Ferguson 35throw a chain on the draw bar and head to therescue. No I wasn't being a knight in shinningarmor, nor a great neighbor sorry to say. I wasfully expecting a tip. I never had a set fee but Ialways got something sometimes $ 1.00 sometimes$ 2.00 and the odd time a five spot.

The only problem with my little business venturewas repeat customers were rare. School would messup my business too. Then of course the townshipsgot their act together and fixed the roads.

Yes mud, another good memory of Life on The Farm.

My List of Firsts. . .I never got ice cream, candy or soda pop. At 12years old, I saw my first televisioncartoon..."Popeye the Sailor". I saw my first singer on the TV. It was RudyValley singing "Winchester Cathedral". Later, I'dsee my first cowboys and Indians in a showcalled "Rawhide". Also, I remember seeing "Lassie" and a show forkids, on Saturday morning, called "The BananaSplits". That was about the extent of it. MyGreat Aunt owned a set and, sometimes, she'dturn it on for awhile when I was visiting. Mostof the time, she preferred to leave it off. Her sonhad bought it for her, but she never did take towatching it. I'd have to wait till I grew up beforeI got to watch much TV.

Coal Was Expensive. . .In my early youth, I grew up on a farm where wehad 33 cows, 18 we milked twice a day,
