MEDAN

History

Medan is the third largest city in Indonesia. Medan was started as a village

named Kampung Medan (Medan Village). Kampung Medan was built by Guru

Patimpus around 1590. Kampung Medan was also known as Medan-Deli because

it was located in Tanah Deli. Based on the diary of Portuguese merchant in the

early 16th

century, it was written that ‘Medan’ actually came from Madinah which

was a sacred city in the Western of Saudi Arabia. However, another source shows

that ‘Medan’ was actually came from India word “Meiden”.

Culture

Majority of Medan’s citizens is Bataknese, another tribe that are also

domiciled in this city are Javanese, Melay, Tionghoa, Mandailing, Minangkabau,

Karo, Aceh, Sunda, and Tamil. Besides that, another comer from Tionghoa also

becomes part of Medan’s citizen. The most well-known cultural heritage of the

Bataknese is Ulos. Ulos generally looks like a scarf, but the material and usage are

obviously different.

Transportation

Another unique feature of Medan is motor rickshaw (becak mesin) that can

be found almost everywhere. Different from the traditional rickshaw (becak

dayung), motor rickshaw can deliver passenger everywhere around the city. The

fare of using ‘becak’ is relative cheap and usually can be negotiated first. There

are also another public transport such as taxi and minibus, known as Sudako.

Culinary

Who does not know about Medan’s culinary? Almost every food in

Indonesia has their outlets in this third largest metropolitan city of Indonesia. May

it be food from Java, Kalimantan, Eastern Indonesia, or nearby province of

Sumatera. Some of Medan’s culinary such as Soto Sinar Pagi, Soto Kesawan, Mie
