Richard Trevithick and the Locomotive

In about 1802, he used a steam engine to power the first locomotive.

Short journeys; unable to find a way of keeping up the steam for lengths of time.

His locomotive became known as the “Puffing Devil.”

James Watt argued that the use of steam at a high temperature could cause dangerous explosions.

Parliament was influenced by James Watt and banned Trevithick’s experiments with steam locomotives.
