What about animal diseases?

4

How about communicating between cultures?

5

….or preparing for an emergency response?

6

All of these problems affect Public Sector institutions, and with IBM’s worldwide research labs they can all be tackled

Business Model Innovation

In a world of commoditized goods, we can help many IBM clients develop and bring to market products that stand out - in feature, function, cost, availability... in being in the right place at the right time. Advanced technology + collaboration make it possible.

The pursuit of innovation within and among organizations raises broader implications -for policy, privacy, digital rights, intellectual property and global trade, for instance. How can the innovations of IBM and our clients serve others - and the world?

The new tools and techniques of innovation unlock enormous new opportunity. That’s the good news. They also require new behaviors, organizational structures and ways of managing. In other words, the tough stuff.

What new capabilities can IBM provide to enable healthcare providers, life sciences firms, government agencies, school, colleges and universities to deliver higher value?

Every organization is a collection of business processes. How can we work with our clients to conceive of, implement, integrate and manage their processes for greater productivity, service quality and differentiation?

The new tools and techniques of innovation can transform an organization’s operations and more. Leading with our industry and business-process expertise, we can help our clients re-imagine what their mission actually is - and what new business models they can put in place to deliver value as their landscape shifts and evolves.

US Federal Wildland Fire Management Agencies are improving the effectiveness of their strategic budgeting using a scenario-based optimization model

IssueThe Office of Management and Budget (OMB) wanted a system that was consistent among all federal wildlandfire fighting agencies, so that it could produce more comprehensive budgets for fire management.

Business impactImproved understanding of the costs and benefits of fire preparedness alternatives will result in increased national effectiveness.

Capabilities appliedIBM combined Research's experience in scenario-based modelling with the GBS consultants' experience in enterprise architecture and application development. Working together, they are developing a system that will work not only for preparedness, but will also serve as a foundation for future fire management budgeting initiatives.

STEM: A Framework and Tool for Visualization, Modeling, and Forecast of Emerging Infectious Diseases

IBM technology and expertise offers new hope in the battle against the spread of pandemic viruses, such as Avian Flu.

A collaborative effort called Project Checkmate brings together IBM and The Scripps Research Institute - a leading research institute in life sciences - to conduct advanced research on pandemic viruses. The objective? To anticipate, manage and contain infectious diseases.

Background

Virtualization of land registry documentation and processes

Challenges

Provide a highly secure solution that enables guaranteed document authenticity through digital signatures by specific authorized persons (local judges, no delegation allowed)

Guarantee digital signatures validity for at least 30 years (average career length of local judges)

Solution

Combination of smart cards and biometric identification to protect against someone assuming a judge’s identity

Combination of digital signatures and time-stamp technologies to generate advanced signatures codes to ensure its 30 year validity

Biometrics: Land Registry in Elsass - GILFAM

16

1 Judge logs on to workstation using smart card based single sign on 2 Judge starts application and

requests conveyance to sign

3 Conveyance generated from DB and passed to S4 for outgoing time stamp & signature4 Judge views document on

screen and on class 4 card reader then initiates signature

5 Judge authenticates himself to the S4 using biometric fingerprint –reference template stored encrypted on smartcard

Judge’s smart card signs the conveyance plus outgoing time stamp

7 The S4 wraps the conveyance plus signatures with a strong time stamped signature

8

The conveyance and signatures are verified before being triggered on the database

6 The S4 authenticates the judges biometric and encrypts a ‘one time signature authorization’for the smart card

SWIS was dispatched to Indonesia as most donations of craft and crew were diminishing, leaving relief workers without means to communicate.

Now, the most devastated areas have the fastest bandwidth available in the entire country.

SWIS comes with satellite phones, being used here, as well as VoIP phones, and data capabilities comparable to a T-3 line, saving tens of thousands of dollars daily.
