I2S HQ: Merits

A useful tool to encourage ALL employees to

contribute to the company development

Thinking out of the box can generate profitable

solutions for MAG

Good ideas are not limited to management

Page 5: Innovation Presentation 07 04 2008

5

I2S HQ: and Limits

With vicious effects which may limit IS2 impact:

Individual reward prevents team approach

Selection process potentially kills « not finalized good ideas »

3 best ideas rewards limit sound evaluation of ideas

Campaigns with a theme limit free spontaneous thinking

KPI implementation tracking favours existing ideas instead of real innovation

Page 6: Innovation Presentation 07 04 2008

6

Innovation Brazil: Pull and Push

A permanent, spontaneous and guided approach:

All year long, employees submit their ideas to the Innovation Committee

In parallel, each LOB innovation workgroup submits every quarter new ideas to the Innovation Committee

Each idea is rated by the Innovation Committee and could receive if selected from 40€ to 10,000€ reward

Successful implementation of the idea and its actual impact on growth/profit, will be associated with a complementary reward (% of generated profit up to initial reward amount)

Page 7: Innovation Presentation 07 04 2008

7

Innovation Brazil: lessons and limits

The Innovation Committee is a key success factor:

A team of permanent members selected in senior management of Operations, HR, Commercial, IT and Finance

Importance of diversity (division and hierarchy) of members in workgroups

always approach the idea with a customer point of view

Make the employees involvement permanent

Despite very positive results, some limits:

Evaluation based on ROI difficult to estimate for all ideas

After 3 years, intense involvement is a challenge to keep

Page 8: Innovation Presentation 07 04 2008

8

I2S: the best of two ways

Cooperation/Competition: favour group instead of individual approach to get more mature/finished ideas

3Ps: Push, Pull in a Permanent I2S attitude

Top Management involvement: to show how serious we are about the process and results at stake, and get contribution of ALL employees

Rating/Ranking: quantitative AND qualitative criteria to reward ALL good ideas and not just a limited number

Recognition/Reward: best reward is idea implementation and associated recognition

Page 9: Innovation Presentation 07 04 2008

Alternative Rewards

“Fringe benefits” Public recognition Champions

One afternoon off for the teamAn extra day-off / possibility to adapt one’s working hoursGain of points, and attribution of rewards according to number of pointsPossibility to finance a humanitarian project to be chosen by the group

A NEW PROCESS FOR GENERATING IDEAS AND SECURING IMPLEMENTATION

Method: Study of the workflow of an idea

how to adapt it to MAG

what tools can we use

what are the pre-requisites for success of the process

Birth of an idea

A flash, the result of a discussion, a hobby…

• Facilitators:

Brainstorming, socializing among colleagues

Participation to conferences, shows, seminars

Meetings with clients and business units

Push of official topics (NPS, Global Empl Survey)

• Pre-requisite:

Possibility to express and share the idea

On-going process

The idea needs to be shared in writing

Tools: user friendly web-based application, forum, open blog, wiki...

Pre-requisite:

– make sure the access to the tool is general among all employees (automatic welcome page, invitations to connect, consult and participate)

– Reward the expression of ideas

The idea needs to be challenged in the selected tool, in order become a candidate for dedicated groupwork

A moderator will decide when it is time to change from IDEA status to GROUPWORK status

Pre-requisite:

Reward participation in discussion: trace contributions and provide recognition

For simple ideas, possibility for moderator to decide to skip groupwork and go directly to publication/validation

If idea not selected for groupwork, feedback needs to be provided

Discuss, develop, improve, detail, structure the idea in order to publish it

4 to 5 participants

Application for participation to be performed on the “tool”

Public approval from N+1 required

N+1:– needs a program description to approve

(objectives, means, deliverables, planning)– commits to give participants the means to

contribute (timewise – priorities)– needs to receive recognition for his effort

to facilitate contribution of his/her team members, and thus the department’s effort towards innovation.

GO / NO GO for implementation

A validation committee needs to be formed:

1. presided by one COMEX member, changing every year

2. includes selected managers

Validation with immediate reward effect

Validation to take place as an on-going process

Validation of ALL quality ideas (no quota)

Reward is needed. So is recognition.

Financial remuneration to be spread over time (immediate + after visible effects)

Other types of reward as valid as financial:

Ideas for non financial reward

1. Benefits: afternoon off, use reward budget in humanitarian project…

2. Recognition from COMEX, president, pairs...

3. Identification of champions: link with Annual Performance Review, training, mobility…
