M arrickville SES fl ood assistance crews were on standby near the Cooks River during heavy rains on Monday.
Local controller Michael Carney said the Marrickville SES received 15 calls for help, mostly for roofi ng or fallen tree jobs but also to pump rain water out of a Dulwich Hill unit block’s basement car park.
“We had a warning from the Bureau [of Meteorology] on Monday afternoon that the weather might be really bad after midnight,” Mr
Carney said.He said the SES also monitored low-lying areas
near the Cooks River at Riverside Crescent, Illawarra Road, Wharf Street and Cahill Place in Marrickville and Bay Street at Tempe.
“We had two crews or 16 members operational on a level two fl ood response. We took our fl ood boat as well, just in case we had fl ood issues,” he said.
“During the day we actually had to have our fl ood technicians on stand-by as well.”
Mr Carney expressed relief that a weather bureau warning for winds of up to 125km/hr had not eventuated and that only heavy rain
eventuated from the low pressure system.Th roughout the day from 7am until 9pm,
Marrickville Council workers cleared small, localised fl ooding of roads.
A Marrickville Council spokesman said staff attended 11 sites to clean out about 38 pits which had caused some fl ooding across the local government area.
Th ese included at Lord Street Newtown, Riverside Crescent Marrickville, Wardell Road Petersham, Carrington Road Tempe, Henry Lane and Henry Street, Bolton Street in St Peters, Victoria Road Marrickville and Bedford Street Camperdown.

hoping to catch Mr Abbott off guard, which she did, and is hoping he remains one step behind through the long, arduous eight months ahead.
But there is a problem in the above plan. What if Mr Abbott does prove his leadership credentials, does issue strong and clear policies, and does play as well on the main fi eld as he did on the practice court?
Surely that sends Ms Gillard into political oblivion, given where she currently sits in the polls and in public sentiment.
Th is unprecedented move will also raise many questions, about how Parliament possibly proceeds as normal with an election date hanging over everyone’s heads.
One really does wonder if it’s at all fair for a Prime Minister to play the game that Ms Gillard did this week. Labor will shrug it off by saying that it avoids speculation about the election date, and allows the real issues to be addressed.
But the real story is that it’s an attempt to give the Prime Minister a fi ghting chance in a battle that most give her no hope of winning.
Here at Th e Inner City Weekender, we are committed to delivering you the best possible coverage of this election.
And from next week, we welcome Laura Jayes to our team. Laura, a political journalist with Sky News, will provide an incredible insight into this campaign, delivering us stories and opinion from the coalface in Canberra, and on the election trail.
No news yet on if Tim Mathieson will accept our off er of a “Joke of the Week” column.
Smile. Go on, smile. It’s going to be a rough, treacherous ride to September.
W ell, that’s one way to get Tim’s jokes about prostate checks and female Asian doctors out of the news
cycle quickly, isn’t it?Prime Minister Julia Gillard shocked
the nation on Wednesday, announcing an election would be held on Saturday, September 14.
Th at’s right – the usual six or seven weeks of campaigning will now be nearly eight months long.
Don’t be fooled into thinking that announcing the date so early makes for a more stable year, or allows the focus to be on policies rather than political motives.
If anything, it only prompts instability for the fi nal months of the Government’s term, with the use-by date now offi cially stamped.
With a smile, Ms Gillard on Wednesday said her intention was “not to start the nation’s longest election campaign”. Sorry, PM, but you know the “politics” better than anyone, and starting the nation’s longest election campaign was exactly your intention.
And in truth it’s a shame she won’t admit it, because it’s a pretty shrewd move. In calling the election so early, she has all but challenged Mr Abbott to prove to the electorate in eight months, not eight weeks, his leadership credentials.
She’s challenged him to issue policies in detail, and opened him up to greater scrutiny, with the news cycle likely to turn a little slower during a campaign of such length.
And in a week in which Mr Abbott received plenty of publicity for his “mini-campaign”, she one-upped him by making the big play while he was still working out his moves in the rehearsal studio. Bottom line: Ms Gillard was

F rom bushfi res to fl oods. Heat waves to cyclones.
What on earth is happening with our weather?
In the space of two weeks we’ve gone from one extreme to another.
I remember a fortnight ago being awake until 2am unable to sleep because of soaring temperatures, feeling anxious about my electricity bill because I’d had the air conditioner running for three days straight.
My husband and I cleared the gutters in preparation for bushfi res. Packed a box of our most important photos and got ready to go if the alert came through.
It didn’t. Our house was safe but it seemed like
the soaring temperatures would be here for a while.
How wrong I was.
Th e Australia Day public holiday was a shocker. A complete and utter disaster for campers.
Sure in Sydney it didn’t peak like the bureau thought it would but I tell you what, in the early hours of Tuesday morning the wind was howling and the rain was absolutely bucketing down.
Th ere was also plenty of localised fl ooding and roads cut off by trees.
Like everyone else I swapped the fan for the umbrella and thought ‘what in the world is going on!’
Is it just me or does the extreme weather seem to be getting more extreme?
Queensland seems to cop it even more than the other states but Melbourne like Sydney is often in the fi ring line.
But if there is one constant through all the crazy weather it’s the dedication of
the SES. No matter if it’s fi res or fl oods they are
there every step of the way risking their lives to save ours.
You don’t realise until you need them just how amazing they are.
Between disasters they sit there idle ready and waiting but as soon as the call comes through they rally like nothing I’ve ever seen.
Th ey work all day, all night and never complain. Th ey don’t ask for anything in return and never moan about being tired. Quite simply they are incredible.
Without their help these disasters would be so much worse.
So THANK YOU to the boys and girls in the orange suits.
You are a shining example of what it means to be an Aussie – a mate helping a mate no matter what.

The Liberal Party has endorsed solicitor and academic Dr Cedric Spencer as its Grayndler candidate for the next federal
election.Dr Spencer, who has previously
volunteered legal services at Marrickville Legal Centre, told the Weekender he used to live “right under the fl ight path” and is familiar with local concerns including aircraft noise and traffi c congestion on Parramatta and Victoria roads.
“I am standing for Grayndler to provide strong representation for our community on the day to day issues that matter,” Dr Spencer said.
“I commute on public transport and have experienced issues that are isolated to our local area.
“With a long-standing personal connection to our local area, as a former small-business owner and as a pro-bono legal advocate for the less fortunate in our community at Marrickville Legal Centre I have the skills, experience and determination to be an eff ective Liberal representative for our community.”
Asked when he decided to become involved in federal politics and why, Dr Spencer said in 2007 the Australian
economy was in good shape, with consumer and business confi dence high.
“Today, our country is in debt and I am concerned about the legacy we will leave our children. I want to work successfully to bring back wealth and prosperity to our local community because I believe it has been neglected for too many years,”
he said.In addition to his work as a solicitor
and barrister of the NSW Supreme Court and High Court of Australia, Dr Spencer practices with a commercial law fi rm in Sydney, is a senior lecturer at several universities and the general manager of a retail chain store in Singapore.

Australia Day celebrations at Enmore Park on Saturday.
Th e inaugural Senior Citizen of the Year was also announced with the title going to Bruce Livingstone, and Young Citizen of the Year awarded to Tina Zhou.
Ms Souliotis is a tireless volunteer and community worker who has developed programs and initiatives for many of Marrickville’s diverse and sometimes vulnerable families.

She is an advocate for women and children who experience domestic violence and has worked with the Women’s Domestic Violence Court Assistance Scheme (WDVCAS) and Family Court to raise awareness of detrimental practices.
Ms Souliotis’ volunteer work is as broad as it is generous. In 2005, she established the ‘Holiday Club’ – a space where parents who could not aff ord a holiday could relax and escape life’s pressures.
Her Warren Road community newsletter ‘Th e Fly’ enlisted several unemployed young mothers in her neighbourhood, giving them important vocational skills.
Marrickville’s fi rst Senior Citizen of the Year, Bruce Livingstone has been serving his community in various capacities all his life. His voluntary work includes many years in unpaid sports administration and church work. Post-retirement he
volunteered full time for Meals on Wheels. He also founded the Marrickville Soccer
Club and his community work included a fi ve year stint abroad in Papua New Guinea where he assisted locals develop their banking skills.
Tina Zhou, Council’s 2013 Young Citizen of the Year, is involved in a wide range of youth, humanitarian and social justice work.

Newtown resident Robert Gordon Miller has been appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for signifi cant service
to the community, particularly through contributions to people with a disability.
Mr Miller, 65, is in his 13th year as director of the Cerebral Palsy Alliance, formerly known as the Spastic Centre of New South Wales.
“I was astonished, I couldn’t believe it – It’s very kind of them to do this,” Mr
Miller said of the award.Mr Miller, a Newtown reisident of 18
years, has watched society’s responses to cerebral palsy improve alongside medical advances, as his organisation evolved from its beginnings in 1945.
It’s a topic close to Mr Miller’s heart after his own son, Christopher, was born prematurely at 26 weeks, barely as big as his hand.
“As a culture, we’ve matured in a big way since I was a kid. We’re more tolerant of so many things these days. At school, kids can still be pretty cruel, so there’s still some work to be done,” he said.

Images must in some way feature, reference or comment on the older attributes of the municipality’s built environment pre-1960. Th e council is specifi cally seeking contemporary perspectives on the layers of urban fabric around us. Th e subject matter must feature or comment on pre-1960 built fabric and broadly fi t into this year’s National Trust Heritage Festival theme “Community Milestones”. Access Committee in need of new membersTh is year the Marrickville Access Committee celebrates its 20th birthday as a formal advisory body of Marrickville Council. In the last few years the committee has looked at and advocated for more accessible public transport, worked to create an easier and more accessible footpath network and assisted on many other Council projects. Art from the streets of Indonesia will be on display at Petersham’s Newsagency Gallery as part of the ‘Girl Gangs of Indonesia’ exhibition until February 30.
Gallery owner and curator Bess O’Malley, who travelled to the south-east Asian nation in September 2012 to source the show’s artwork, said the exhibition comprises work by 16 female artists from the cities of Yogyakarta, Jakarta and Bandung.
“Th e works range in style and medium, they are very feminine, some are quite dark, all are rather fascinating,” Ms O’Malley said.
Ms O’Malley, a Petersham resident, said she was inspired to develop the show after she staged an exhibition in June 2012, which featured only works by male artists from Yogyakarta.
“I wanted a bit of balance for the girls. Yogyakarta is like a rock and roll town, it’s so cool. Th ere are all these punks, sort of like Sydney in 1989. Th e street art is a huge feature… Th e streets of Yogyakarta and Bandung are littered with fantastic street art,” Ms O’Malley said.
Proceeds from the gallery’s sales of arts and crafts by feminist punk collective Needle N’ Biotch will go towards women’s safe houses and telephone help lines for women in Jakarta. For more details exhibition visit www.newsagencygallery.com.au.

D espite the many groups they
have to promote their industry, our winemakers are a pretty much
independent and individualistic lot. So it was with interest I learned of a group in Victoria’s Rutherglen who’ve been successfully working together to promote not their industry and not their region, but just one wine they all make, Durif.
And they’re quick to point out that they’ve been doing it virtually since the fi rst Durif vines were planted at Rutherglen in 1908 by the forebears of today’s families behind the eight labels of the Durif vines, All Saints, Bullers, Campbells, Cofi eld, Morris, Rutherglen Estates, Scion Vineyard, and Stanton & Killeen.
“And at the same time they’ve also been able to further develop their own individual house styles through exploring new viticultural and winemaking practices,” said Chairman of the Durif of Rutherglen Network, Colin Campbell.
“And then bout 10 years ago we went a step further by establishing the Network to lift the profi le of Durif amongst red wine lovers, and to win over new devotees.”
For more information about Durifs of Rutherglen, email [email protected].
Special occasion: Christmas, New Year and Australia Day may now be behind
us, but that’s no reason to stop drinking the bubbly stuff. Yellowglen have released two sparklings for those extra special occasions that will come up in 2013: a 2002 Exceptional Vintage XV and a 2004 of the same label. They were both made from fruit sourced from their Hargrave Vineyard in the Adelaide Hills.
Only the best parcels of fruit were chosen, and then the best resultant wines left to mature for up to 10 years, leading to wines with a rich complex palate, delicate bead and lingering fi nish. Both sparklings are wonderful value at $49.99.

Azzurra Fitness classes are shaping bodies from across the inner west with the guidance of master trainer, Rob Charlwood.
Under Mr Charlwood’s supervision, the Renwick Street personal fi tness facility specialises in training small groups of 10 people or less, with the option of ‘women’s only’ classes each weekday morning from 9.30am.
“We use a combination of functional
fi tness sessions with boxing classes and boot camp to attain a broad spectrum of fi tness and strength,” Mr Charlwood said.
“Each of my indoor classes only have 10 people, boxing has 20 people and boot camp is unlimited. With only 10 in each fi tness class, it’s more personalised – I can cater to everyone’s abilities.”
As well as building the personal fi tness of individuals, Mr Charlwood said he hoped to build a sense of community
amongst his clients.“We’ve tried to develop a community
atmosphere. We hold social outings, so we might hold a barbecue here, then do a Cooks River run.
“I think there’s more and more public awareness about obesity and heart disease. People understand more and more that fi tness is one of the ways to achieve better health and even to reduce stress in our high pressure lives.”
Azzurra Fitness off ers emergency services personnel a 20 per cent discount.
“So for police, fi ries, ambulance, military and the SES after they’ve been working so hard,” Mr Charlwood said.
For those looking for an image overhaul, he has also written a free e-book, Th e 12-Week Body Transformation, available at www.marrickvillefi tness.com when you download a class timetable. Interested clients can try their fi rst session free!

It is going to be necessary to deal with diffi cult situations
both at work and at home, however facing your feelings will allow you to move forward. If a separation is on the cards, make an extra eff ort to show your feelings. Women will be especially supportive so chase up old friends for love and support. Th e New Moon on the 10th falls in your party sector and you will feel an over whelming urge to kick up your heels.
Friends and acquaintances are going to have a powerful
infl uence on your future prospects and Uranus gives you added optimism and vitality. Your social life will increase in importance and obstacles that have irritated you on the work front will be swept away. Neptune encourages you to indulge in pampering yourself, however you need to take a responsible approach to all fi nancial aff airs, so don’t let that extravagant streak lead you to far astray.
Your focus is on economic security and a cost cutting
drive becomes your new obsession. Everyday expenses, health and education all come under the microscope. You might even decide to downsize your home. Th is is an ideal time to focus on getting fi tter. Th ere is no doubt that issues surrounding friendships and trust are very important, therefore you need to be as straightforward as possible.
Variety is the spice of life and unusual people or places will
exert a powerful pull, therefore it’s time to indulge that adventurous streak with a crazy day out. If you have to deal with awkward, demanding children or even adults who insist on acting like children, you will be able to defuse the most troubling situations by the use of empathy while still maintaining a position of authority. Th e New Moon is the ideal time to focus on fi nances.
Th is is not a time to gamble on anything, you need to stick to
the tried and tested and take a responsible attitude to everything you are dealing with. Th e males in your social circle are going to be passing on some useful tips so be as open minded as possible when in their company. Unexpected breakthroughs are likely on the home and family front and you will have the heaven sent chance to pour oil on any troubled family waters.
You will have the urge to change your career or to simply
demand recognition for past eff orts. No matter how this ambitious phase manifests itself you can be sure that your prospects are considerably boosted from now on. A serious attitude is likely re: your relationships, as Neptune is making you feel rather suspicious about certain people and you may have a vague suspicion about a friend’s motives.
Happy Birthday Aquarius! 2013 will see you climbing the
ladder of success and other people looking to you for leadership. With Saturn in a diffi cult aspect to your sign you’re ready to confront any unfi nished business both personally and professionally even if this means having a few confrontations. Th e New Moon in your sign on the 10th sees you using your famous sense of humour to win friends and infl uence people.
Th e planets are all heating up your love zone so expect
conversations with your partner to be deep and intense. For couples wanting a family this is the ideal time to set plans in motion. Your energy may be rather low and it’s possible that you’ve been taking on too much just to show how impressive you can be. Are you sure you’re not going for the sympathy vote? It doesn’t really matter as the fact is you need rest so make sure you get some.
It’s the ideal time for you and your partner to review your
fi nances, the secret of success lies in clarity so make sure you are aware of all the pros and cons in any fi nancial dealings. Speak up about property and domestic issues, but be constructive. Th e past may come back to haunt you or cause you embarrassment – perhaps you forgot to do something or you did something in an ineffi cient manner and this problem now reveals itself.
You’ll discover inner resources that you never knew you had
and this is the ideal time to open up and talk to others about fi nancial and family worries. Neptune is creating a lot of rumour mongering and back stabbing at work and you are best advised to keep to yourself and not get involved in anything that doesn’t feel right. If an old health complaint keeps fl aring up it’s the right time to seek the advice of a professional.
It’s all about you this month. Mars in your sign gives you a
boost of confi dence and it’s time to break old habits and take up new ventures. You are always there for everyone else and it’s time to start saying ‘no’ more often and to let yourself unwind. Th e travel bug is likely to bite so take yourself to your local travel agency and look through a few brochures. You are likely to be feeling emotionally drained and warn out so rest up.
It’s the ideal time to fi ll your cupboards with healthy foods,
to haul out your exercise gear, get a few early nights and give up negative habits. All this will work wonders for your energy levels. You are going to be a little too critical for your own good as you are likely to fi nd colleagues and neighbours being diffi cult to get on with. New projects at work will also be diffi cult to launch. On the home front this is the ideal time to replace a dishwasher.

Pyelonephritis is a type of bacterial urinary tract infection (UTI) that aff ects one or both kidneys. It can be serious because of the
important function of the kidneys.Th e urinary tract is the body’s drainage
system for removing wastes and excess water. It includes two kidneys, two ureters, a bladder and a urethra.
Th e kidneys are located near the middle of the back, just below the rib cage, one on each side of the spine. Urine fl ows from the kidneys to the bladder through tubes called the ureters.
Th e bladder stores urine until releasing it through urination. When the bladder empties, urine fl ows out of the body through a tube called the urethra at the bottom of the bladder.
Bacteria can move to the kidneys from the bladder or can be carried through the bloodstream.
If pyelonephritis isn’t treated straight away it can result in sepsis. A UTI in the bladder that does not move to the kidneys is called cystitis.
People most at risk for pyelonephritis are those who have a UTI and those with a structural, or anatomic problem in the urinary tract.
Urine normally fl ows only in one direction, from the kidneys to the bladder. However, the fl ow of urine may be blocked in people with a structural defect of the urinary tract, a kidney stone, or an
enlarged prostate. Urine can also back up, or refl ux, into
one or both kidneys. Th is is called vesicoureteral refl ux (VUR), and it occurs when the valve mechanism that normally prevents backward fl ow of urine is not working properly.
VUR is most commonly diagnosed during childhood.
Most people with pyelonephritis do not have complications if appropriately treated with antibiotics.
Occasionally, pyelonephritis may cause kidney scarring, which can lead to chronic kidney disease, high blood pressure, and kidney failure.
However, these problems usually occur in people with a structural problem in the urinary tract, kidney disease, or repeated episodes of pyelonephritis.
Symptoms range from mild to severe, but include fever, chills or sweats, abdominal or back pain, loss of appetite, nausea or vomiting, dysuria (which is pain discomfort when you urinate or having a frequent urge to urinate).
Th ough you may only present with a couple of these symptoms, these symptoms should not be ignored.
If you have symptoms, see your GP right away.
Acute pyelopnephritis is diagnosed by urine culture, blood tests and if required CT imaging and treated with intravenous antibiotics.
B iggest Loser is nearly back! Viewers tuning in week after week can watch as people with severe obesity are
routinely yelled at by weight obsessed trainers, exercised until they vomit, injured, weighed nearly naked on a giant scale, and seemingly taught that the numbers on that scale measure not only their weight, but also their self-worth and represent the only true value of their health and success.
One of the things I often tell the trainers I teach is that people should get healthy to lose weight, NOT lose weight to get healthy.
Th ere’s been a few studies conducted on this. I saw recently in an article by Yoni Freedhoff , results showing that viewers’ bias to believe obese people are overweight just because they are lazy, is greatly increased. Interestingly, those same viewers were reported to be less inclined (go fi gure) to want to exercise or expect it to be enjoyable after watching a 7.5 minute workout on the show, according to a study published this month in the American Journal of Health Behavior.
People are screaming and crying and throwing up, and if you’re not a regular exerciser you might think this is what exercise is – that it’s this horrible experience where you have to push yourself to the extremes and the limits.
Extreme weight loss will always slow a person’s metabolism, what wasn’t expected in other research was the magnitude of that decrease; researchers found that participants’ metabolisms slowed by an average of 504 more calories than losing weight slower. In turn, this suggests that the show’s approach to weight loss may have risks unto itself and led the researchers to state: “Unfortunately, fat free mass preservation did not prevent the slowing of metabolic rate during active weight loss, which may predispose to weight regain unless the participants maintain high levels of physical activity or signifi cant caloric restriction.”
Figures why most of the contestants regain their initial weight!
If you’re a regular viewer here’s my suggestion.
Instead of spending hours a week watching ‘Th e Biggest Loser’, why not use that same amount of time to ensure you pack your lunch for work each and every day and take three 20-minute walks a week with a friend or a loved one.
Th e impact of those behaviours will be far more valuable and positive to your mental and physical well-being than watching a show that science suggests may be doing more harm than good.

EI f there is one
heartfelt and fractured love
story that you have to see this year, it is defi nitely the incredible ‘Silver Linings Playbook’.
In cinemas on Thursday, January 31, director David O.Russell tells the tale of two delightful and slightly dysfunctional people who form an unwavering bond when trying to rebuild their lives. This romantic comedy features Bradley Cooper who
plays Pat, a man who has been recently released from a state institution and goes back to living with his parents.
Along the way he meets Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence) who is also battling her own demons. This tenderhearted tale traces the unexpected hardships that life throws our way and the undying strength to move forward and keep surviving. The plot is constantly engaging and reminds
the audience that in life every cloud has a silver lining. This movie is warm, funny and a little bit unconventional.
G amers get ready for the release of
‘Dead Space 3’. Join Isaac Clarke and the merciless soldier, John Carver, on a journey across space to discover the source of the Necromorph outbreak.
Explore the frozen planet ‘Tau Volantis’ and comb through the harsh environment for raw materials and scavenged parts. When parts are found Isaac will have the opportunity to use his
engineering skills in the ultimate test to create and customise weapons and survival tools.
In this picture perfect game the team must overcome some of the harshest environmental conditions including avalanches, treacherous ice climbs and the violent wilderness. Facing volatile, evolved enemies and the brutal elements, the pair must work together to save mankind from the
impending apocalypse. The much anticipated ‘Dead Space 3’ is available on PC, PS3 and XBOX360.
T here have been countless movies based
on the notion of time travel but most seem to always fall short. Unlike others ‘Looper’ is an exceptional, futuristic thriller that once watched will make you think about its intricately constructed universe.
Time travel is invented and only available on the black market. The mobs use the time travel function to get rid of people so there is no trace of
their existence. When they send “looper” Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) a target to kill from the future, he realises he has been sent his future self (Bruce Willis) to kill.
In an attempt to avoid his own assassination the movie follows younger Joe trying to chase his older self in an effort to fi nd out why the mob wants him dead. Director Rhian Johnson brings the audience action, adventure, mystery and suspense.
One man is both haunted by his future and his past, which makes this movie incredibly intelligent.
C oming out on Friday, February 1
is Pete Murray’s new album, ‘Blue Sky Blue: The Byron Sessions’. This album celebrates the collaborative Byron lifestyle and includes some very special guest guitarists.
After fi rst releasing Blue Sky Blue, Pete wanted to re-record the album to how it originally was when he was jamming out with his friends. He wanted to take the record and strip it back to the
times they would all get together and feed off each other’s music.
Pete put forward the idea to his muso mates and offered them the chance to contribute to this compendium album. Byron locals Ash Grunwald and Scott Owen (The Living End) lend their slide guitar bass respectively to make the record ‘Hurricane Coming’. Another well known Byron local Bernard Fanning takes time out of his busy recording
schedule to sing backing vocals on ‘Led’.
Listeners will love the 10 relaxed and re-worked tracks that Pete Murray has changed to suit a local, calm Byron environment.

T he tennis is over and cricket is just about done, and it’s time for networks to resume normal programming…
Kicking off this week was the new series of ‘My Kitchen Rules’ and boy did it get off to a good start. 1.38 million viewers tuned in to the fi rst episode, beating ‘Masterchef: The Professionals’ by nearly 500,000 viewers. It’s understood the series, which was fi lmed late last year, actually gets better as the episodes roll on, so expect to see the numbers climb for ‘MKR’ over the coming weeks.
‘Celebrity Apprentice Australia’ went back into production this week and some of the contestants have already been revealed. Former boxer Jeff Fenech is set to join the hit show with Stephanie Rice, Prinnie Stevens, Kim Johnson, John Steffenson, Brian Mannix, Rob Mills, Dawn Fraser, Dermott Brereton, Peter Berner, Prue Macsween and former ‘Big Brother’ contestant Layla. The series will likely premiere over the next month or so will plenty of new challenges for the contestants.
‘Smash’ lovers look out because SoHo is fast-tracking the musical-drama series from next week. The second series will air this Wednesday, February 6 at 7.30pm, the same day as its US debut. The surprise hit of 2012 will this time feature some new cast members as well as a new show-runner. Also returning are new episodes of the popular ‘The Big Bang Theory’. Nine will screen two new episodes from this Monday and Tuesday from 8pm.
Sad news last week with the death of an Aussie icon, Patricia Lovell, best known as ‘Miss Pat’ on ‘Mr. Squiggle’. Lovell died last weekend following a battle with liver cancer. She was 83.
A few of our favourite shows were renewed in the US recently. Channel Ten’s ‘Dr. Phil’ has been renewed for three more years, as has HBO’s hugely successful ‘Girls’ which will continue for a third season. It wasn’t good news for US comedy ‘Ben and Kate’, which recently got the axe and ‘Don’t Trust The B In Apartment 23’, which also got the chop.
Get excited Kardashian fans, returning to E! on Tuesday, March 5 is the latest instalment of ‘Kourtney & Kim Take Miami’. Kourtney, along with her partner Scott and their children Mason and Penelope, will share a mansion with Kim in Miami as the sisters make the destination beach city their home base for the next few months.
Lastly, one show that I’m loving at the moment is A&E’s ‘Ghost Adventures’, screening every Saturday night at 11.30pm. If you love the paranormal but can’t stay up that late, set your IQ or DVR because this show is absolutely awesome. The ‘Ghost Adventures’ crew investigate the scariest, most notorious, haunted places in the world. The enthusiastic trio interview eye-witnesses and historians at each location, arming themselves with the stories of the ghosts they will later confront during their dusk to dawn lockdowns. They then review and analyse their fi ndings with some of the most respected experts and specialists in the paranormal fi eld. There are plenty of ghost shows around but this by far is the best!

Struggling A-League franchise Sydney FC have the opportunity to leapfrog their way up the ladder this weekend, but they’ll have to
overcome the inconsistent Newcastle Jets fi rst.
Th e Sky Blues are currently sitting in eighth position on 20 points but are potentially just one win away from cracking the coveted top six.
It’s fair to say Saturday afternoon’s clash at Hunter Stadium between the Jets and Sydney FC is the most important one to date for the two clubs this season. A victory by either side will ensure their spot in the fi nals at least for a week.
Making Sydney FC’s trip up the F3 even more diffi cult this weekend is the fact that they’ll be without three key players.
Defenders Tiago Calvano and Fabio Alves won’t travel due to suspension, while veteran mid-fi elder Brett Emerton is out with a back and hamstring injury.
Th eir opponents, Newcastle, are unbeaten in the last four games, scoring one win and three draws, however the Jets are struggling to score points, only notching up two goals in those four appearances.
Meanwhile, critics are calling it their best performance of the season after cross-town rivals, Western Sydney Wanderers, showed the Melbourne Heart their hearts last Saturday night.
Reduced to just 10 men for 80 minutes, the Wanderers outplayed and outmuscled
their opponents, who were sitting just one place below them on the A-League ladder.
Despite being outnumbered on the paddock, Western Sydney were fi tter, stronger and hungrier, beating the Heart 1–0 after a Shinji Ono penalty kick.
Coach Tony Popovic was full of praise for his team for their physical and mental
strength and the way they stuck to their game plan.
“Th at was a fi rst for us, we were down to 10 men and the boys continued to play within a structure and with confi dence,” he said.
“We knew that if we did not give the ball away in silly areas we could win the
match.”Th is week, fans will be hoping the
Wanderers still have plenty of fi ght left in them when they take on the fourth placed Adelaide United at Hindmarsh Stadium.
Th is will be the third meeting between the two clubs wirh the series currently standing at one win apiece.
Crunch time for A-LeagueSydney FC need a win against Newcastle to secure a temporary spot in fi nals

The Inner West Roller Derby League strapped its skates on again this month to prepare to battle the South West Sydney Rockets in March.
Skater Yvette Le’Nepveu, one of the league’s three founders, said training kicked off on January 16 with practice games, basic skills sessions and helping members improve their ‘derby stance’ on skates.
“We are getting back into it after the holiday session to get as many people ready for ‘bouting’,” Ms Le’Nepveu said.
“Our next public bout will be against the lovely ladies from SWS on Sunday, March 24. We are also doing a round robin tournament with four other leagues starting in May.”
Th e IWRDL holds two offi cial training sessions per week, one at Five Dock Leisure centre on Wednesdays and at Mascot on Sundays.
“We also tend to do other things such as street skating or skate parks as a group.”
As well as honing their skating skills, the league recently donned new uniforms for its fi rst home bout on December 9. Th e IWRDL contains about 40 members, including referees, non-skating offi cials, injured skaters and skaters at diff erent skill levels.
