    GEOGRAPHY

Sweden is the fourth largest country in Europe. Its area is more or less equal to that of Spainor the state of California. Half of its land areais covered by forest. Less than ten per cent isfarmland, most of which is to be found in thesouthernmost part of the country. The distancefrom north to south measures 1,600 kilometres(1,000 miles), which means the countrys naturalfeatures are quite varied. Nearly 100,000 lakesare connected in a lacework of waterways. A

long coastline with thousands of islands alsocontributes to the character of the country.

Over the past decade, Malm has undergone asubstantial post-industrial transformation. Thiscosmopolitan city has reclaimed the seafront, where entire new city districts full of modernarchitecture and bustling street life have beenconstructed. Another radical change has beenthe mighty resund Bridge, opened in 2000,

which connects Malm with Denmarks capitalCopenhagen, just twenty minutes away. Theregion now forms a single metropolitan area;one of the most expensive, exciting and energeticin Northern Europe.

Malm is an ideal base for exploring this newregion and in less than one hour visitors can

reach not only several major cities, but also alarge number of historical and picturesque towns

and villages, beautiful beaches and impressivecastles and manor houses.

For all its expansion, and with a population of300 000 inhabitants, Malm remains a small, friendly and pleasant city where almost every-thing is located within easy walking distance. For example, Malm has its own beaches atRibersborg, Sibbarp, Klagshamn and Scaniabadet.

POPULATIONSweden has a population of 9 million. About80% live in cities and urban areas. More thana third of them live in the three largest cities,Stockholm (the capital), Gothenburg and Malm. The population density, 20 inhabitants persquare kilometre (54 per square mile), makesSweden one of the most sparsely populatedcountries in Europe. For many years, Sweden was

ethnically very homogeneous, with the exceptionof the Sami people who live in northern Sweden.During the 1960s and 1970s, more than half amillion immigrants moved to Sweden for work.Over the last few decades, Sweden has also recei-ved refugees from a number of countries troubledby war. Today, 1 out of every 20 inhabitants is aforeign citizen or has a foreign background.

Despite its northern latitude, Sweden has atemperate climate with four distinct seasonsand mild temperatures throughout the year.

Sweden is much warmer and drier thanother places at a similar latitude, and evensomewhat further south, mainly because ofthe Gulf Stream. For example, central andsouthern Sweden has much warmer wintersthan many parts of Russia, Canada, and thenorthern United States.

Malm has very unpredictable weather, withsunny summer conditions sometimes rapidlychanging to damp, showery conditions and

vice versa! The winter is long and damp withlots of wind and frost. December, Januaryand February are the coldest and rainiestmonths of the year. Snow is very infrequent!

SUITABLE CLOTHING FOR THE CLIMATEOutdoor clothes should be warm and waterproof. Bring a winter scarf, hat and glovessince it can be very cold and windy. Shoesshould be warm and suitable for varied

    2. ACADEMIC INFORMATIONMalm University strives to be a university opento all; a university that is structured to cope with

our ever-changing job market through a multi-disciplinary approach that crosses traditionalschool and faculty boundaries. Malm Universityhas five school and faculty areas, all of whichare multi-disciplinary. This means that severalsciences meet under one roof, each one enrichingthe other. Our courses and programmes give gra-duates a wider outlook as they prepare for theirfuture professional working careers.

The main campus area of Malm University lies

in the centre of town, and the modern harbourarea. The Faculty of Culture and Society, Schoolof Technology and School of Education arelocated near the harbour. The medical sciencescampus area is located by the university hospital, alongside the spectacular Pildamms Park andcosmopolitan Mllevngen square in the centreof town.

The academic model in Sweden is culturally uni-que and differs considerably from anywhere else

in the world. There is a focus on the individualstudent at all levels of learning, where the studentsare responsible for their own development. Theopen and interactive teaching environment atMalm University encourages critical thinking, discussions and questions in lectures and semi-nars. Although you will have a number of lecturesevery week, much of your work will be indepen-dent studies and group work. Be ready to takeresponsibility for your time and studies!

Details of courses offered each semester as well ascourse outlines and prerequisites are available onour website www.malmouniversity.se

One semester of full-time study is 30 highereducation credits (hp), equivalent to 30 EuropeanCredit Transfer System points (ECTS). Please notethat you need to be admitted to at least a full timecourse (30 ECTS credits) in order to qualify for aresidence permit for studies in Sweden.

Relations between students and teachers atMalm University are very informal. Studentsare encouraged to ask questions, both in theclassroom and outside. Classes often consist ofdiscussions around chosen topics rather thanteacher-provided lectures. Learning and teach-ing is considered a two-way communication.Dont hesitate to ask questions about things you

dont quite understand or comment on issues youdisagree, or agree, with. Teachers will expect youto call them by their first name, as students andteachers consider one another equals. This does

of course not imply that the teachers will acceptanything but your best performance in class andduring examinations.

PLAGIARISM AND CHEATINGPlagiarism is the unauthorized use of work orthoughts of someone else. Plagiarism and chea-ting is neither legal nor accepted in our academic

culture. For details about Equal treatment of stu-dents and your Rights & Responsibilities at MalmUniversity, please visit:www.mah.se/Rights-and-responsibilities

NONEU/EEA CITIZENSAS A VISTING STUDENT, YOU ARE ENTITLED TOHEALTH CARE BENEFITS WHILE LIVING IN SWEDEN.

HOW YOU RECEIVE HEALTH BENFITS DEPEND ONYOUR STUDY DURATION.

IF YOU ARE A STUDENT ENROLLED FOR ONEYEAR OR LONGER:If you have a residence permit for 12 monthsor more, you are entitled to the same benefitsas Swedes. However, you must register at yourlocal tax office as soon as you arrive in Malm. The civil registration procedure can take sometime, but this service will be provided during

our orientation week. Medical insurance doesnot cover your journey to Sweden or the timeyou spend in the country prior to applying forcivil registration. Thus, to be fully covered, youwill need some form of travel insurance. Makesure you have a valid health and travel insurancefrom your home country prior to your civil regist-ration in Malm. For more information regardingSwedish social insurance, visitwww.forsakringskassan.se/sprak/eng

IF YOU ARE A FEEPAYING STUDENT ENROLLED IN A COURSE OR A ONEYEAR MASTERPROGRAMME:If you have a residence permit valid for aperiod of less than a year, you are not ableto register at the local tax office. In this case,Malm University will provide health insu-rance for you. This does not include travel/medical insurance for your trip to Sweden. Please note that if you do not make your tui-

tion payment on time, by the 1st of June2012, we cannot guarantee you will be cove-red by this health insurance.

    EU/EEA CITIZENS

IF YOU ARE AN EU/EEA CITIZEN:

Contact your health insurance company fora European Health Insurance Card (formerlycalled E111). The European Health InsuranceCard gives you the right to immediate medicaltreatment on the same conditions as Swedishcitizens. If you dont bring this card you riskhaving to cover all eventual costs! Check withyour health insurance company if there is anagreement between your country and Swedenregarding health insurance coverage. If thereis, you should check the conditions that apply

and bring your insurance card with you toSweden. For more information regarding theEuropean Health Insurance Card, please visit:www.ec.europa.eu/social/main.jsp?catId=559

Students who are not covered by any of theseagreements must arrange their own insurancecoverage. We strongly recommend you do thisin your home country as there are very fewinsurance options available for internationalstudents in Sweden, and they are probablymuch more expensive than the ones you canget from home. In Sweden, medical treatmentis very expensive without any form of insu-rance.

Malm is located in the very south of Swedenacross the bridge from Copenhagen. Dont bookyour ticket to Stockholm (the capital city ofSweden), which is located about 800 km northof Malm. Try to get boardingpasses for each section of your journey. Try to keep

your luggage to a minimum for several reasons;you will have to carry them yourself until youreach Malm Central and also because you willalmost certainly return home with much moreluggage than when you arrived. It is a goodidea to carry this handbook in your hand lug-gage along with important documents like yourtravel insurance and Letter of Acceptance torefer to during your journey and at customs! What is characteristic of Swedes? Blond hairwith blue eyes you say. You have probably al-ready found out that this is not always the case.

What you may not have figures out yet is whywe behave the way we do Below you find somehints that can make your stay in Sweden a littlebit easier.

BE ON TIMEBoth at work and in our social life, we are usu-ally very punctual. One exception to this ruleis the so-called academic quarter, which onlyexists at the university. If a lecture for example isposted to start at 10:00, in fact it starts at 10:15.

But not all lecturers apply to this phenomenon,so please ask to be on the safe side!

TAKING YOUR SHOES OFFThis really is a strange habit to most foreignersWhen you visit somebodys home, you willusually take off your outdoor shoes right at theentrance. It is quite normal to walk around inyour socks only, even if you did not think so!

NO SMOKINGSmoking is not allowed in public buildings, restaurants and bars. If there is a specialsmokers area, you are not allowed to smokeanywhere else. To be sure, take it as a goodrule always to ask before smoking, especiallyin peoples homes.

SOCIAL LIFE IN SWEDENThere is a saying that we are reserved and thatwe are difficult to get to know. We have to admit

that this may be true (especially during the darkmonths). Student activities will hopefully giveyou the opportunity to make friends. Do not beafraid to seek contact with people and to takethe initiative, it will be greatly appreciated. Mostof us are very social, just a bit shy.

PAYING THE BILLAfter grabbing a beer with your friends or afterhaving a wonderful dinner with the man/woman

of your dreams, you will realise that picking upthe tab is an unknown phenomenon in Sweden. The bill is usually split according to how muchyou ate and drank. You are welcome to givesome extra tip if you feel like it.

ANSWER THE PHONEWhat do you say when you pick up the receiver?Just Hello? In Sweden this is considered as im-polite. Commonly we answer directly with ourname or phone number, so do not be surprised.

QUEUES/LINESBesides punctuality we are known to be law abi-ding and very fond of forming queues. Wheneveryou are waiting for something; at the cinema,to pay in a shop etc, you are supposed to waitin a proper queue. Almost no excuse is goodenough to push your way forward in the queue.A modern version is a system with queue tickets(a little piece of paper with a number indicating

when it is your turn). This gives you the libertyto move around freely while you are waiting. Soif there is a queue ticket machine, do not forgetto take a ticket and look for a number display!

We have tried to give you some hints on how tobehave in Sweden. During your stay you mightrealise that some of the above mentioned maynot be accurate and other things are exactly theway we describe it ;-)

Welcome to Sweden and enjoy your stay!
