As I look back over the events of our first year to-gether, I can’t help but think how naive we were, howserendipitously fortunate we became, and how opti-mistically ambitious we continue to be. At whatwould become our flagship meeting in December of2008, we came together as just 12 modest industryveterans, pooling our resources and vast array ofcontacts for a common goal: to help those through-out the commercial real estate market who, throughno fault of their own, had become the casualties ofthe worst industry-wide financial downturn inmemory. These people weren’t statistics. They wereour co-workers, our clients, our neighbors, our com-petitors, and our friends. As long term marketanalysts, we knew that many of the positions lostwere not coming back - ever. What could we dothen, to help those among us who were hurting, withno where to turn, in an economy whose resourceswere already approaching exhaustion? The answerto that question, as it turned out, was Real EstateLives.

Losing one’s job in the current eco-nomic climate, leads to far greaterobstacles than simply finding a newposition. The families of our RE-boundrs were steadily losing ground- from terminated health benefits, toforeclosures, to repossessions andto the basic necessities such as foodon the table and enough gas in thecar to get to potential interviews.

The core challenge became obvious to our Leader-ship Committee from the start: how can we meet thewide variety of needs of such a diverse group? Thenumbers alone were staggering; our first year sawover 334 active members seeking employment, 550members on the mailing list, an average of 120 at-tendees for each twice monthly general meeting, andapproximately 500 resumes submitted for review andplacement assistance.

Like ripples in a pond, our requests flowed outwardfor support, volunteerism, and resources. Our re-quests were answered time and again by tremendousorganizations such as NAIOP, CREW, and REIC. Wethank each of these organizations from the bottomsof our hearts.

With the combined efforts of these professional organizations and the limitless resources of our ownvolunteer powerhouse, we have been able to createover 15 different committees, programs, and eventsthat have benefited our members over the past year.We strive to take the hurting under the Real EstateLives umbrella as quickly as possible and expose themto our organization and our services. A personal invi-tation is extended to attend our meetings. That firsthour is a very lonely time and our goal is to offer aidand comfort to help them through it.

The Job Mining Committee continues to post exclu-sive job openings and leads on the realestatelives.orgweb site. The site has 17,000 pages of usage eachmonth, increasing about 20% monthly, and is esti-mated to grow to 12-14,000 hits per year. With theuntiring efforts of Elaine Kennedy Ruyle, DianeHumphress, and Matt Hammer, the Job Mining Com-mittee has averaged 50-70 exclusive and

non-exclusive job postings eachmonth. That number represents anannual total in excess of 600 jobpostings.

A cornerstone of the Real EstateLives organization has been to offerfree and/or reduced cost trainingand educational opportunities toassist members in updating theirknowledge base and resumes. Weare committed to providing training

and educational resources which enable ourmembers to use this challenging time for personaldevelopment in preparation for reemployment, rather than dwelling on the events of the past.

To engage and motivate our members, we hosttwice-monthly 15 Minute Coaches, who share per-sonal stories of dark times and happy endings withour members. Some of those 15 Minute Coacheswere: former Congressman Mike Bilirakis, Mayor PamIorio, Founder of Lifestyle Family Fitness Jeff Dyer, andDeBartolo Development President and COO, EdKobel.

We also know despite excellent attendance at ourtwice monthly general meetings some needs are bestmet in smaller, more personal gatherings. For thisreason, we started REbuilders and REnew. The former

is peer lead while the later is a response to requestsfor a spiritual lift among our REbuilders.

We also offer a Mentor/Mentee program which pairsvolunteers with REbounders to provide one-on-oneinteraction, guidance and support. Demand for, andattendance at, our Small Group meetings also contin-ues to grow. Ten to twelve people informally gatherto share ideas, information, and brainstorm for thebenefit of all members. No matter the format, all ofthese programs and Small Group meetings offer anunderstanding, friendly environment which can makea world of difference to our members.

Our gracious patrons over the past year have beenthe life blood of our organization. We recognize ourREbounders are not stand alone units but are rathera part of a family unit and the entire family washurting. To lessen that hurt we organized fun, familyevents so they could all attend as a family. We saluteour own Kim Kenney who recognized the void andfilled it with the Family Events committee whichbrought our Rebounding families such wonderfulevents as:

• Take Me Out to the Ball Game- A day a Steinbren-ner Field to watch the Tampa Yankees play.

• Pack to School Ice Cream Social- held on the beachand patio of the beautiful Westin Tampa Bay Hotelwhich was the event sponsor.

• Milk and Cookies with Santa- Held at the Westin, the event sponsor, the families were treated to milkand cookies and Santa distributed an enormous bagof gifts for the kids.

Each event was a raging success and the notes ofgratitude we received from attendees whose lives webrightened were evidence that Real Estate Lives wassuccessfully realizing its purpose.

We have been blessed from the beginning with aprodigious outpouring of volunteer effort and talentthroughout the organization. Members receive per-sonal calls from the phone bank volunteers every twoweeks, reminding them of upcoming meetings andasking, in general, how their search is going and if theyhave any additional needs which we can help meet. Our newsletter has grown from a one-page emailalert to twelve beautiful pages of full color graphics,

distributed to over 642 subscribers, in electronic andprint format, with hundreds of monthly services, leads, and available programs as well as articles and columnsof interest to our members. Immeasurable gratitudeis due to our great Navigator, Pam Winchester, whocoordinates all of the moving parts of the organiza-tion seamlessly and with a heart as big as the sky.

All members of the Leadership Committee and theon-going support from enthusiastic volunteers haveempowered this organization and allowed it to ac-complish all that it has over the past year. I stand inawe of all you have accomplished together, and all ofthe lives you have touched, in such a short amountof time.

I am confident that Real Estate Lives will eventuallyphase out, perhaps in a year or two, and come backas Real Estate Rocks, once again when we can allcome together with compassionate hearts, neverlosing sight of our humble beginnings, to celebrateour REbounder’s thankful professional accomplish-ments and accolades and the fact that we trustedeach other and ourselves enough to attend that firstfateful meeting.

Here’s to the future- the future of our REbounders, our Industry, and our Friends. We look forward tothe journey. I thank you for the honor of being yourChairman.

We have stunned ourselves withwhat we have accomplished in ourfirst year and we are frightened byall that still needs to be done. As Ireceive reports from our various

Committee Chairs who deal directly with our REbound-ers in groups large and small, my heart weeps for all thesuffering so many of our people are enduring.

Sometimes I imagine a perfect world where we could findhigh paying, lasting jobs for all our people. A world whereall their health care needs are met and they don’t haveto tap into their savings and their children’s college fundsjust to survive. My heart weeps because it isn’t a perfectworld, but then my back bows up and I know we canmake a difference. We have made a difference and we willcontinue to make a difference. Real Estate Lives is filledto the brim with some of the kindest, most compassion-ate, most selfless people I have ever experienced. Theygive of their time and themselves freely. They’re smart, cre-ative, and tireless. One of our volunteers, a self describedserial volunteer, once told me “This is the noblest causeI’ve ever been associated with” and I couldn’t agree more.To see our friends, clients, competitors, and neighbors allhurting the way they are demands we take action to easethat hurt and in 2010 we will redouble our efforts to doso.

•We have seen the effectiveness of our Small Groupsand we will seek to double the opportunities for ourREbounders to join a Small Group near them.

•We will establish a training program and produce atraining manual for those who seek to start a SmallGroup.

•Although in its infancy, attendance for our REnewSmall Group is overwhelming. REnew is our first sec-tarian Small Group and focuses on Bible study andhow the study of the Bible can show us the way. 29attended the very first REnew meeting and we typi-cally try to limit our Small Groups to 10-12participants. Accordingly, in 2010 we will seek at leasttwo additional venues for REnew Small Groups.

• The empathy shared in our REbuilders Small Groupwould bring tears to the eyes of even the strongest. These are among the REbounders who are hurtingthe most and we will seek funding to deal with day today emergencies; the single mother of three who hasbeen out of work for six months and whose car

breaks down so she can’t even get her children to thedoctor or herself to an interview. The father of fourwho has been out of work for almost a year and isterrified about what will become of his family if theylose their home. These dear people aren’t worriedabout shame or embarrassment. They’re worriedabout their own survival and that of their families. Wemust do more for them and we will. When emergencyfunding is appropriate we will make every effort toprovide it.

We have seen the difference Real Estate Lives can makein peoples’ lives and others have seen it, too, both locallyand across the nation. Locally we have had individuals andcompanies stand up to be counted. They want to helpand be it goods, services, or checks they approach us dailywith offers of help. We want to be good stewards of theirtrust and both our Sustainability and Sponsorship Com-mittees, working in lock step with our ExecutiveCommittee, are working tirelessly to map out action plansto maximize how effectively we may serve those whoneed us the most. Upon completion we will share thoseplans with those who have expressed interest in partici-pating.

For those throughout the state and across the nation whohave reached out to us and made inquiry as to how they, too, might organize a Real Estate Lives for their area orfor their industry, know we are working diligently toproduce an exportable model to guide you in yourefforts.

And lastly, as you aware we are a volunteer task force ofNAIOP Tampa Bay Chapter, Inc., a Section 501(c)(6) or-ganization. We have struggled with whether to remain a501(c)(6) or seek non-profit status. Our attorneys (all vol-unteer) are presently evaluating our options and weexpect to have a decision by the end of the first quarter.

As we look toward 2010 we’re scared and we’re opti-mistic but most importantly we’re here…to do what wecan to help our fellow man.

Looking back to how it all happened I’m surprised at howquickly it all happened, but then again, I’m not. RonWeaver is a smart man and he personally reached out topeople close to him which, if I had to guess, fit two majorcriterions. They had passion and were well connected inthe Tampa Bay area’s commercial real estate market. Isuspect it was no accident a big segment of the group heinvited to hear about his idea and how to make it a realitywas current and past leadership of CREW Tampa Bay. Thevery first meeting we all looked around at each other andsaid things like, “Wow, how nice to see you. I didn’t knowyou’d be here.” And the typical answer was… “Nice tosee you too and frankly I’m not sure why I’m here, Ronjust invited me and I’m here to find out what’s up.”

There wasn’t anyone who was not aware of the carnageoccurring on the employment front and most were sureit was going to get worse in the short-term. At that veryfirst meeting a game plan was laid out and people agreedto assume various roles to handle the immediate taskswe knew we needed to address. We sure had no ideawhere the idea was really going but we knew we had alot of bright, experienced talent assembled, all with a will-ingness to help. We needed someone who would serve

as the acting Director, ajob which we initiallythought could be passedfrom one person to thenext to be sure we didn’tburn someone out. Luckyfor us Pam Winchesterstepped up, under thepremise of it would betemporary only to findthat she would take it onas a full time job…ofcourse with no pay. Shereally took charge with

lots of compassion combined with the skills to organizeand get people moving like I’ve rarely seen. It’s why shewas quickly tagged as the “get it done chick with heart.”We started out meeting in person every two weeks, butthe phone and email lines of communication wereworking overtime.

I don’t think we knew how important the web part ofReal Estate Lives would become. It provided the market-ing basis, of course, but its underlying software let us

quickly get up a mini –Monster.com, only better since itwas referral based and industryspecific! Elaine Kennedy-Ruyle,quickly took control of the jobsarea and we were off and running! A group of dedicatedvolunteers went out into the community to find open po-sitions, and we went out into the community to let peopleknow we were ready to help! The Greater Tampa Asso-ciation of Realtors loaned us meeting space and thecollaboration of those that could help, with those whoneeded it took shape quickly. Essentially the web pres-ence became our office. It enabled us to build a databaseof volunteers and people who needed services quicklywhich in turn meant we could mobilize at a moment’snotice. It also gave us a place to store documents and in-formation to share among everyone involved…truecollaboration in motion!

The organization grew the way the best ones always do…a need was recognized and a process to fill the need wasput in place. As an organization we were then, and stillare, a modern example of being “virtual”. We did whatwe had to when it had to be done and nothing more andwe found that people gravitated to what they did bestand gave what they could comfortably give. It started asa great model of working on the “who” then the “what"as described by Jim Collins' book, Good to Great - getthe right people on the right bus moving in the right lo-cation and everything else is just details. Don’t all we wishevery venture we undertook was orchestrated so well!

Real Estate Lives is an all volunteer organization. During our first year approximately 400 volunteers gave of theirtime and energy to help those within our industry who suddenly found themselves jobless.

The first Real Estate Lives interface for volunteers is the Membership Committee. This committee determines if thevolunteer has any preference as to which of our 15 committees they would like to become a part. If the volunteerhas no preference, the committee assigns them to one in need of additional volunteers.

The Leadership Committee directs all committee activities. The Leadership committee is comprised of all committeechairs, as well as other key individuals. At the conclusion of our first year, there were approximately 32 individualsserving on the Leadership Committee. The Leadership Committee is charged with all tactical decisions.

The Leadership Committee reports to the Executive Committee, which is charged with general oversight and allmatters strategic. Presently, 18 serve on the Executive Committee. Selection to the Executive Committee is deter-mined by the Chairman/Founder and the Navigator.

Due to the volunteer nature of the organization many volunteers, because of family or work constraints, find it nec-essary to withdraw their membership. We have been fortunate over the past year, each time a volunteer stepsdown, another steps up.

Real Estate Lives provides services to REbounders through a committee structure. Committees, their Chairs, andthe responsibilities of their committees are described below.

Public RelATionsEarly stage exposure is important for any volunteer service organization and Real Estate Lives was no different. Wehad to get the word out in order to help. A local public relations firm, Tucker Hall, was our first big donor, agreeing toprovide $5,000 of in kind services. Our needs were so great, however, that sum was used up before we really got upand running. We reached out to other firms in hopes of securing pro bono services. After preliminary meetings withXposure Group’s principal, Steve Holub, they agreed to sign on and have served as Real Estate Lives pro bono publicrelations firm ever since. This was a vital function which we could not otherwise have afforded and as our servicesexpanded and our needs became greater. Xposure Group never blinked. They handle all media relations. They main-tain the media section of our web site. They write articles and distribute them for publication. And is always the case,Steve has joined in with other committees to provide service to our members. It would be rare indeed for RealEstate Lives to run a family event without finding Steve Holub right there in line with committee members perform-ing the nitty gritty tasks it takes to run a successful family event. Real Estate Lives salutes Xposure Group for itsongoing efforts for the cause.

Steve Holub, Public Relations ChairmanPrincipal, Xposure Group

VolunTeeR/MeMbeRshiPThe web site was in its infancy, and not yet ready for self-registration, so Roseanne Versaggi and Amy Henriksonjumped in to collect names by hand and say hello to each person who attended.

We were tasked with filling a database with the names and contact information of those who attended the meetings. As the web site matured, Roseanne, Elaine Kennedy, and others were able to manually enter each person’s informa-tion. Within months people were able to self-register. In no time the membership list grew to over 300.

By March 2009, attendance at the meetings was 40 to 60 with no end in sight. A formal membership Committeeemerged Joyce Zevola and Bob Hutchinson signed on. All became faithful greeters. The warmth in that first intro-duction to the organization was instrumental in keeping people coming back week after week. Vesna Cherry thensigned on and the Membership Committee numbered four.

In addition to “welcome wagon” duties the Membership Committee also places those volunteers who have ex-pressed an interest in serving. REbouder skills are matched with committee needs. As time went on and wordspread the attendance at the twice monthly meetings continued to grow, new initiatives were launched, committeeswere expanded and spun off. At the conclusion of our first year average attendance for general meetings had in-creased to 120 and committees and new initiatives stood at 15.

The Membership Committee played, and continues to play, a vital role within Real Estate Lives. We salute the out-standing service provided to Real Estate Lives by Amy Henrikson and Vesna Cherry. Employment REsources also maintains both theREbounder data base as well as the volunteer data base. Employment REsources also disseminates information toREbounders and the Real Estate Lives community regarding meeting dates, special events, training schedules, etc. viathe web site. Employment REsources is a core function and was started simultaneously with the creation of the or-ganization.

Job MininGThe Mining Committee was formed in December of 2008. It is a Real Estate Lives core function. This committee’ssole function is to generate job leads and to get our REbounders back to work as quickly as possible. They pursueleads, tips, and conduct primary research to uncover positions before they are made public. Positions are thenposted to the Real Estate Lives proprietary Job Board. All leads are organically generated. In 2009, the Mining Com-mittee helped place over 194 REbounders and identified over 1,000 employment opportunities. We are grateful forour remarkable group of volunteers which made this possible. It is amazing what happens when people volunteer tohelp others! Those who served on the Mining Committee went back to work at an astonishing 79% rate. The MiningCommittee serves the entire REbounder population.

FiRsT needs/RebuildeRs/FiRsT houRImmediate Needs is a core function of Real Estate Lives and was brought on-line day one. It has evolved over timeinto three distinct operating units.

• First Needs endeavors to match goods and services with the needs of those who have lost their jobs. They makethe REbounder aware of free or greatly discounted goods and services, such as: food sources, utilities assistance, private and public healthcare options, free medical clinics, free or discounted prescription drugs, foreclosure work-shops, financial planning, and unemployment information

• REbuilders deals with the emotional aspects of job loss. Classified as a Small Group, REbuilders is peer facilitated.Meetings are highly confidential due to the nature of the discussions, and as newcomers become more comfort-able with those around them, they feel better able to open up and share their concerns/fears and acceptcompassionate guidance. REbuilders first met in June of ‘09

• Immediate Needs was sparked by conversations within REbuilders where it became apparent the mental damagebrought on by job loss sets in immediately. Many talked of how they struggled to tell their spouses they had beenlet go. There were stories of individuals who go up, got dressed, and “went to work” each day because they felt hu-miliated to tell their spouse they lost their job. The emotional strain can be debilitating. Immediate Needs, as thename implies, seeks to reach out to those individuals as soon as we are made aware of their discharge. They areassigned a mentor and made aware of the full gamut of services and offerings available through Real Estate Lives. They are invited to attend our general meetings to learn more and to recognize they are not alone, that the verysame thing has happened and is happening to very bright, talented people who have displaced as a consequenceof this horrendous recession and not for reasons of their own doing. Immediate Needs came into being inOctober of ’09.

ReboundeR connecTionsMAll GRouPsAs attendance at the general meetings began to increase it was determined some REbounders would not be com-fortable speaking out in front of such a large group. Small Groups was formed in February of ’09 to address thisissue. Today, Small Groups is one of our most popular endeavors, with several Small Groups maintaining their ownsocial calendars. The groups are based on familiarity. When you see the same handful of people over and over again, you get to know them and establish personal relationships with them. You become comfortable discussing issueswith them which you might not feel comfortable discussing in front of a much larger group. Many consider SmallGroups to be a multiplier. It’s no longer just one person looking for a job. It’s everyone in the group looking for a jobfor that individual. They share interviewing techniques, who’s hiring, what the market’s like, etc. There are currentlyfive small groups including one which is faith based.

It reminds REbounders of the upcomingdate and location of the Real Estate Lives meeting and who will be speaking at it. Call Bank volunteers provide infor-mation on the speaker for the general meeting and the topic for the training session that will be availableimmediately after the meeting. The most important role of this outreach is for the volunteers to engage the RE-bounders and encourage them to communicate regarding challenges, needs, opportunities, successes, and otherforms of assistance they might need. The Call Bank team consists of 40 volunteers. Each calls an average of 7-10 RE-bounders every two weeks. They report the results of the contacts by e-mail to the Call Bank Chairman. Anysignificant need or request is forwarded to the appropriate party or to the Executive Committee. TraininG/educATion/PeRsonAl deVeloPMenTReal Estate Lives has been blessed with many highly specialized and talented volunteers who devote hundreds ofhours per year to sharing their wisdom with our REbounders. Their objective is simple: train and coach up our RE-bounders in all aspects of the job hunt in order to put them in the best possible position to land that job.

They start with the basics. We have very talented resume writers who review existing resumes and make recom-mendations. Many of our REbounders have never been out of work in their adult lives and an equal number havenever even filled out a job application. Such had been the state of our industry most positions were filled by word ofmouth. Some weren’t even sure how to write an effective resume. They didn’t know how to market themselves inperson, by phone, or in writing. And they didn’t know what skills to emphasize or how to write an effective coverletter. While our REbounders’ wealth of experience and past training efforts may have been acceptable in a roaringmarket, today’s challenging job-hunting environment requires a new approach. Our resume writing experts often en-courage REbounders to upgrade their software skills or take a few classes, as necessary, to better compete in thesearch for a new position. Our Resume Review Committee Chairman Jodi Wilkeson, and her team members, re-viewed 202 resumes over the course of our first year. 114 documents were submitted electronically, and 88 werereviewed one-on-one in person, during our twice monthly REL meeting break-out sessions. Written examples ofupdated resume format types, recommended language styles, content suggestions, and composition tips were pro-vided to REbounders by reviewers.

Real Estate Lives has partnered with a number of technical schools to offer scholarships for classes designed toaddress these deficiencies. For those whose skills are current it becomes just a question of marketing and our train-ing experts offer a plethora of courses designed to help our REbounders put their best foot forward. During ourfirst year we offered the following in-house interactive training courses. The instructors were Larry Labelle (TrainingTamer Inc.), Barron Johnson (Dale Carnegie Institute), and Bob McEachnie (McEachnie & Company).

• Resume Writing • Graphical Cover Letters• Interviewing Skills • Managing a Career Change • Networking Tactics and Practice • Career Portfolio Development

• Creating a Strategic Business ValueSlide Show

• Graphical Cover Letters • Salary Negotiations • Information Interviews • Writing a Sales Pitch

• Identifying Your Accomplishments • Networking for a Job in TurbulentTimes

All classes were one and one half hours duration and were held at the same location as our twice monthly generalmeetings. The general meetings ended at 11:00am and the training sessions commenced at 1:00 pm. Training Chair-man Larry Labelle estimates more than 400 REbounders attended training classes during our first year.

Real Estate Lives also provided a Job Seeker Jump Start Workshop (4 ½ Hours) for people who were recently laidoff and needed to get up to speed on all aspects of the job search quickly. This was offered twice a month fromAugust to December of 2009 at the Jimmy Keel Library and over 50 people attended. Larry LaBelle also providedone-on-one interview coaching to 15 Rebounders.

In addition, Real Estate Lives offered an offsite Job Seeker Acceleration Group (JSAG) workshop. These intense twohour workshops were spread over eight nights and were limited to 12 participants per class. Eleven REbounders par-ticipated in this pilot offering of this workshop during September and October of 2009 and over 50% have won jobsto date. The group continues to meet informally and will not stop until every member has found a job.

In partnership with the Hillsborough Public Schools Aparicio-Levy Technical Center REbounders have received schol-arships and/or tuition assistance for courses necessary to sharpen or upgrade their business skills. In 2009, 20REbounders took one or both of the following courses:

susTAinAbiliTyWe established the Sustainability Committee right from the start, not knowing if it would ever have any funds toworry about accounting for. Fortunately, we were wrong. As word of our efforts spread many individuals, groups andcompanies came forward to offer their support through goods, in kind services, and checks. We are grateful for theearly support of the Real Estate Investment Council (REIC) and Commercial Real Estate Women (CREW). Financeshave remained stable leaving a surplus over budgeted amounts for 2010, including about $2,000 per year for website maintenance and improvement and 15 programs’ expenses like family events at $250 per quarter. Thank you tomany friends including especially $5,000 annually these two years from REIC Tampa Bay through our NAIOP parentthat created us a task force of its 501 (c)(6) structure. Our surplus will be needed in the new year for new pro-grams and to further fund the 15 existing programs like REbuilder twice a month peer lead counseling and FirstHour help packages, web site, communications, program expenses, and the special Valentines dinner for REboundersand their beloved, and area HR professionals’ reception to mine more jobs. Dallas Whitaker is the steward of ourfunds, and mid-year his efforts were augmented by those of Audrey Brantley, who has been an invaluable asset. To-gether they serve the organization by managing and tracking all financial resources. Initiatives must first seek outsidefunding or self funding before approaching the Sustainability Committee. Going forward, we envision the Sustainabil-ity Committee playing a much larger role as recognition of our mission increases, and as the number of sponsorsalso increase.

ReAl esTATe sPeciAl eVenTsReal Estate Lives holds various events throughout the year to raise awareness of who we are and what we do. Theseevents typically bring forth a multitude of new sponsors and volunteers which, of course, is their purpose. Duringour first year we held three such events.

1. Launch Event - This event was held during the cocktail hour at Tampa’s prestigious University Club and served as amixer with REbounders, Sponsors, employers and recruiters all in attendance. More than 100 attended our firstpublic event.

2. Port of Tampa Boat Tour - Sixty REbounders were treated to a tour of the Port of Tampa of the 72’ CatamaranBay Spirit II thanks to Peter Ferri and the Port of Tampa.

3.Anniversary Pancake and Waffle Breakfast - This event was held in November at the newly re-flagged and reno-vated Howard Johnson hotel in downtown Tampa. Approximately 140 Real Estate Lives volunteers, sponsors, andREbounders feasted on this buffet style breakfast and listened to Chairman and Founder Ron Weaver presentvarious committee awards.

FAMily sPeciAl eVenTsAs hectic as it was getting Real Estate Lives up and running, it was inevitable something important was going to slipthrough the cracks. So it was with family events. Midway through our first year Kim Kenney, of our Executive Com-mittee, brought it to our attention. “There are a lot of children out there who are missing out on things because oneor both of their parents are out of work. They’re hurting, too. We need to do something for the whole family; some-thing fun.” The concept was brought to the Chairman who issued his standard blessing. “That’s a great idea. Whydon’t you run with it and let us know what we can do to help.” There was Kim; one person with no funding and noinput. In June she got us started with A Day at the Ballpark. REbounders and their families were treated to an after-noon barbeque at Steinbrenner Field followed by a Tampa Yankees game and free Yankee ball cap. All this was donewith no funding. Everything was donated. That was followed in August by the Pack to School Ice Cream Social. Fami-lies were treated to fun and games on the beach at the beautiful new Westin Tampa Bay Hotel and the little oneswent home with back packs filled with school supplies. Family Events was now a firmly entrenched committee withKim serving as Chairman. While Kim was away during the latter part of the year, Jennifer Haddaway and Tara Harrisjumped in to organize Milk and Cookies with Santa, again at the Westin. There was fun, games, caroling, and gifts fromSanta’s bag for all the good little boys and girls. They had an opportunity to have their picture taken with Santa andthere was even a special reading of The Night before Christmas by Santa himself. By then sponsors were vying to bepart of these family events and going forward we will have even more funding. While hard numbers are not availablewe estimate over 200 families took part in these special events.

Beyond the immediate needs assistance, job mining, and training provided by Real Estate Lives, we also focus on thespirit of our REbounders. Often times it is easy to get caught in tunnel vision and feel alone in the challenges weface. As part of the whole solution, Real Estate Lives provides the “15 Minute Coach.” Every meeting a special guestis invited to speak to the REbounders. This 15 minute segment is time spent for the invited Coach to inspire, moti-vate, and encourage by sharing personal stories of challenges and strife and strategies of how to overcome. Many ofTampa Bay’s most respected professionals have shared their stories this year as our “15 Minute Coach.” They camefrom political office and government agencies and they came from private enterprise; each with a story of persever-ance. We say this to each of them: You have touched our hearts and whether your efforts were rewarded withstanding ovations, thunderous cheers, long lines just to shake your hand or a teary eyed audience know on that dayyou made a difference. I was invited to attend a Real Estate Lives meeting and oneof the most important things I received was words of en-couragement. I was so surprised that so many hardworkingand well educated professionals were in the same situationI was through no fault of their own. My husband and Ihad already downsized and done all we knew to do, butReal Estate Lives volunteers helped me find other avail-able resources and provided guidance through the system. Ibenefit from attending the meetings and have volunteered toassist others through Real Estate Lives. - MLD

After 27 years of working the unimaginable happened, I found myself unem-

ployed. Coincidently, Real Estate Lives was just forming and I attended a

meeting. Around the room were both friends and other professionals that were

in the same (un)employment position and a handful of volunteers with resources

available (that I didn't even know I might need) for the journey ahead. It

gave me hope and helped to mend a bruised ego. I also agreed to volunteer

for the group which provided an outlet to do something productive for myself

and for the organization. I am gainfully employed again and have my friends

at Real Estate Lives to thank for their efforts and moral support during the

transition period. I look forward to continuing my involvement with the group

and helping others rejoin the workforce. - Roseanne
