Introduction
MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) is a world-wide threat to health.
MRSA is in our environment.No-one is immune. It only takes a little carelessness for a cut, spot or medical incision to become a major infection.
Introduction II
MRSA demands we have rigorous hygiene practices and habits.
Hygiene for MRSA starts with me and my home.
Hygiene must include public access areas. Get medical help even over the Internet if you have a cut or wound that will not heal.
What is MRSA?
MRSA is an abbreviation of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.Common name is Staph but it resists antibiotics.
History of MRSA
First found and documented in the 1880's.Treated in the 1940's with penicillin. The Staph bacteria fought back and produced an enzyme that rendered penicillin useless.
By 1959 90 to 95% of the Staphylococcus aureus resisted penicillin.
History of MRSA II
The scientists developed a new antibiotic called Methicillin to overcome the enzyme that made the penicillin useless.
Within 1 year of the introduction of Methicillin the first case of MRSA was reported and the bacteria was defeating the antibiotics sent in to kill it.
The 1970's and 80's did not see much activity.
History of MRSA III
By the 1990's there were many problems. MRSA became established in hospitals.
People in hospital for an operation with MRSA on their skin are isolated and staff will wash their hands between each patient.
MRSA and the Sportsperson
The MRSA bacteria is also found in the community
Take great care of your personal hygiene.
MRSA and the Sportsperson II
Those most at risk in the community are those those who play sports.
Sportsmen and women are often their own worst enemies when they ridicule one another for going to the doctor,
A cut that does not heal must be dealt with now by a doctor.
Dangers of Community
Every public venue lack of toilet hygiene
lack of disinfectionHairdressers disinfect equipment?Tattoo studio is your skin clean
is equipment sterile? The list could go on and on
Why is MRSA such a problem?
The MRSA bacteria is common. The MRSA bacteria passes easily from the skin of one person to another.
The MRSA family of bacteria adapts to fight antibiotics that aim to kill them.
When MRSA finds a home in an open wound it is very hard to get rid of it.
Forgotten Hygiene
We have forgotten the basic rules of hygiene.
We do not take responsibility. We are our worst enemy.
MRSA and Pets
Pets get the MRSA bacteria on their skin from contact with humans.
Pets can get cuts and scratches, they do have operations
If the open cut gets infected with MRSA then the antibiotics may not kill it. So ask your veterinarian to test for MRSA rather than give one antibiotic after another
MRSA and Pets IIClean and put away sports equipment immediately
Do not let the animal lick and rub against it.Keep sports clothing from your pet.Anything with blood on it, bin immediately.Wash your hands before and after you handle the pet
MRSA and Children Keep hands clean by washing with soap
and water. They hate soap and water but they must
get over it. Athletes should shower and wash with
soap after play including any school sports and kids playing in the yard.
Keep all cuts and abrasions covered with a proper dressing until healed.
MRSA and Children II Keep your medicine box full of up-to-date
plasters and medication. Avoid all contact with other people's
wounds or material contaminated by wounds.
Do not let them use someone else's sports equipment.
Barrier nurse anyone with MRSA.
The Battle with MRSA The MRSA bacteria will try and stay alive
at all costs. The MRSA bacteria will adapt to resist new
antibiotics.
The Battle with MRSA II The drug companies will try and beat
MRSA. We will need a world-wide strategy to
destroy it completely. Speedy diagnosis is now possible but cure
is not.
Prevention! Prevention! Prevention
Is your family infected?Who taught them their basic hygiene?Did they practice what they were taught? Was a first-aid kit available?

Conclusion
Stop “lowgiene” and practice hygiene. The buck stops here:
either in your handor with you in reading this,
Conclusion II
Both partners must work to teach hygiene One partner is main teacher. The other must reinforce the lessons. Keep those children safe.Start at home and spread out to school and college include parks and anywhere children congregate.
Conclusion III
Today is the day to start and protect your family from MRSA.
Good health is a gift – appreciate it.
