WHAT IS INFORMATION LITERACY?

“Information literacy is a set of abilities requiring individuals to recognize when information is

needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information” –

Association of College and Research Libraries

Why is it important to be information literate?

Lots of information sources out there – need to know how to separate good sources from

bad sources

Being information literate means you’re able to find and access information, evaluate its

usefulness, and incorporate it into your existing knowledge in order to use the information

effectively

Good for problem solving and researching!

WHAT IS E-LEARNING?

E-learning is learning through an electronic medium, most often associated with online learning,

web-based training, and instruction delivered via technology.

Why is E-learning important?

It allows for differentiated instruction – everyone learns differently, and incorporating new ways

of learning (like through technology) means everyone can be taught in a way that works best

for them!

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

After this tutorial, you will be able to:

Tell the difference between good and bad sources of information on the Web

Understand the different types of search engines and become familiar using search engines

other than Google

Use educational sites to enhance your understanding of the course material

Page 5: INFORMATION LITERACY - Kent State Universityjsveda/infolit.pdf.org: This domain is owned by a nonprofit organization. There are more requirements to get this type of domain name, so

GOOD SOURCES

How do you know if a website is a good source of information?

Try to find all or most of the following to determine a site’s reliability:

Author: Who created the site? Who wrote the article? Who sponsors the site?

Purpose: Why was the site created? Why did the author choose to use some information

rather than other information?

Usability: Do the links work? Does the site have a lot of advertisements and pop-ups?

Currency: When was the site last updated? Is the information recent and relevant?

Content: Does the site cite credible resources? Is it written with proper spelling and

grammar?

Page 6: INFORMATION LITERACY - Kent State Universityjsveda/infolit.pdf.org: This domain is owned by a nonprofit organization. There are more requirements to get this type of domain name, so

BAD SOURCES

Bad sources usually have inaccurate or unreliable information

How can you tell if a website is a bad source?

No author listed, no information about the publisher or sponsor of the site

The information is clearly biased – for example, a website titled “Why I Hate Thomas Jefferson” is

probably not a good source of information on Thomas Jefferson’s life

The links are broken, the site has lots of advertisements and pop-ups, especially ones with

inappropriate content

The information is outdated, there are no dates on the information or the site has not been

updated in a long time

The website does not cite its sources, cites unreliable sources, or contains bad grammar and

spelling

DOMAIN NAMES

What is a domain name?

The part of a network address that identifies it as belonging to a particular domain

For example, www.acoolwebsite.org

The domain name can tell you more about who owns the website – and therefore, how

reliable the website is!

This is the network address

“.org” is the domain name

Page 8: INFORMATION LITERACY - Kent State Universityjsveda/infolit.pdf.org: This domain is owned by a nonprofit organization. There are more requirements to get this type of domain name, so

DOMAIN NAMES

Here are five of the most common domain names:

.com: This domain is owned by a company. Because almost anyone can have a .com site,

these sites can be less reliable, so you need to evaluate them carefully!

.org: This domain is owned by a nonprofit organization. There are more requirements to

get this type of domain name, so the information may be considered more reliable

.net: This domain is usually owned by an Internet Service Provider (like Time Warner

Cable, for example). Like a .com site, these sites need to be evaluated carefully before using!

.edu: This domain name is owned by a school, college or university. It is more likely to be

a reliable source of information

.gov: This domain name is owned by the government, so it is a reliable source of

information

SEARCH ENGINES

According to Dictionary.com, a search engine is “a computer program that searches documents,

especially on the World Wide Web, for a specified word or words and provides a list of

documents in which they are found.”

You are probably familiar with at least one search engine already – Google

In fact, Google is such a popular search engine that “to google” is a term defined on

Dictionary.com as “to search the Internet for information”!

Today you are going to get familiar with a few more search engines:

Dogpile.com

Ask.com
