Infant/Toddler Sun Hat Pattern A FREE pattern courtesy of Twinfinite Fun This pattern is designed to fit an older infant or younger toddler. (It fits my 15-month-old twins perfectly.) Materials: - ½ yard fabric - Velcro or snaps Instructions: 1. Print out pattern templates, cut, and pin to fabric. 2. Cut 4 of the brim (2 of fabric, 2 for lining) and either 4 or 8 of the hat panels. Cut 8 if using a lining, 4 if not (leaving the dome unlined). (Some fabrics are thinner and need a lining) 3. Place 2 fabric brim pieces together, right sides together. Sew along the straight edges. Repeat with lining. Unfold and iron seams flat. (Diagram 1) 4. Pin brim to lining, right sides together, carefully lining up the seams. (Diagram 2) 5. Sew all the way around the outside edge using a ¼-in seam. Turn inside-out and iron flat. 6. Sew along the outside edge creating a nice clean top stitch. (Diagram 3) 7. Now take two of the panels and pin right sides together. Sew along one of the curved sides. Repeat with two more panels. (Diagram 4) 8. Open up both sets of panels and pin together, carefully matching up seams. Sew together to create the dome of the hat. 9. Repeat steps 7 and 8 if using a lining. 10. Fold the strap pieces over onto themselves and sew along the open edge and one bottom edge. Turn inside out using a pencil or safety pin. (Diagrams 5-6) 11. Attach one side of Velcro or snap to each strap and set aside. (Diagram 7) 12. To put it all together turn the dome of hat upside down and pin the brim all the way around, matching up right sides. (If using a lining add it now, with right side out.) Make sure the brim’s seams hit on the sides of the hat since this is where we will attach the neck straps. (Diagram 8) 13. Insert straps between the brim and the lining to secure the open edge. Make sure the Velcro or snaps line up on the right side! Pin in place. 14. Sew along the inside of the hat. Turn inside out and see your creation! (You can also add a button or bow on the top of the hat, or add a trim around the edge of the brim to add a little something extra!) (see Diagrams 9-10)
