Here are the instructions for the “autumn leaves hat pattern”. Please follow these photographic instructions for the making up of your hat please.

Cut all your pattern pieces out, noting you will need:-

2 side panels of main fabric

2 side panels of lining fabric

2 top pieces for the crown of the hat

2 lining top pieces

1 interfacing for the peak

2 peak pieces main fabric – cut on the fold of the fabric

Cut out all pattern pieces

Page 3: Autumn Leaves Hat Pattern instructions

Sew together the two top seams of the crown pieces that go down the centre of your head (marked centre of head)

Sew the side walls to the 2 centre pieces sewn above

Cut out fabric and interfacing for the peak pattern piece (on the fold of the fabric) and iron interfacing to the main fabric, on the wrong side of the fabric, sew the peak piece, following the given seam allowances, then turn right side out and press to get a nice finish and then pin to the main hat.

Baste the peak top edge together 6mm away from the edge in to close it off

Page 5: Autumn Leaves Hat Pattern instructions

Fold the peak in half and make a slight press mark

then pin the peak to the centre front of the hat by matching this pressed mark to where the centre front seam is

Pin the peak piece to the main hat, Stitch the brim on to the main hat using 1cm seam allowances. Make up your inner lining in the same manner as above hat, (omitting the peak piece)

Leave a hole in the centre back seam

this is to turn the cap right side out when it

is finished

then place the right side of the lining piece into the hat, facing you and stitch around the lower edge on the given seam allowance.

after stitching around the lower edge, the hat gets turned to the right side out through the hole left in the back of the cap

This hole is then slip stitched closed

Attach gros grain ribbon onto the outside if you like it as a trim. I attached mine only to the brim section of the cap. To do the “bow” trim, I just folded the ribbon several times and sewed it into place with a vintage button

Please email me if these instructions need further explanation

With your interfacing

Firstly if your fabric happens to be soft, please interface it all with a soft woven fusible interfacing, to get a really nice finish on your hat. If your fabric is not soft, then don’t interface it. With your peak, I used iron on stiff interfacing, (but my fabric was very firm on one hat – so I didn’t need much interfacing in the peak) this one below

Page 10: Autumn Leaves Hat Pattern instructions

Whereas this hat, I interfaced both sides, and to give it extra firmness, I used topstitching (which is optional, depending on how you like the feel of the peak and then I make the decision as whether or not to topstitch it)

To put the buckle on the hat below

What Jennifer, from, http://www.minefull.etsy.com - did was “She took a strip of fabric and turned in the raw edges to the size of the metal ring. Then she top stitched both long edges, with a zipper foot, so she could get a close seam. Then she turned the edges over the metal ring and stitched in place. (she made sure the band fit the hat) then she hand blind stitched the band to the hat.” These are her photos and her instructions below. Jen makes many of my hat patterns up for me.

1. To find the size to cut your fabric for the band: For the length, measure the outside dimensions of your hat you intend to put the band on and add 2 inches to that measurement. For the width, measure the inside length of your ring. Take that inner dimension of your ring multiply by 2.5. (So you can fold the fabric in half and have a 1/4 inch seam allowance).

2. With right sides together match raw edges along length. Press. Sew with a 1/4 inch seam allowance.

3. Turn strip right side out, press.

> 4. Top stitch along edges.

5. Fold over a short edge (twice if desired, but not necessary) and insert ring into fold. Stitch close to ring with a zipper foot.

6. Pin band to hat. Fit loose end of band into remaining ring and pin. Be sure to not pull band too tight. Since the hat (or your head) is not a perfect circle, but more of an oval, you may want to slant the band on an angle so it fits the hat with little gapping.

7. Unpin band from hat (leaving the unfinished end with ring still pinned). Trim or turn up the unfinished edge and sew with a zipper foot close to the ring.

8. Fit band on hat and hand sew with a slip stitch along top and bottom edge of band to hat.

I would love to see a photo of your finished hats please!!
