MARINE CABLESGeneral Cable presents its Exzhellent-Mar series of mari-ne cables, which are built in accordance with current IECstandards for installation in power distribution and controlcircuits and signals in fixed installations on vessels.
As an innovation in this sector, General Cable presents itsexclusive series of cables for fixed installations with flexi-ble, sector-shaped copper conductors in sections of 50mm2 or larger, to facilitate laying and installation in shor-ter times and to save on occupied space. Such construc-tions allow for reductions in finished cable diameter, asthey minimise interstitial space between conductors andthus prompt savings in space and weight. The use of fle-xible, sector-shaped conductors does not require anychanges in connection work as they allow the use of thesame terminals as those used for circular conductors. Allthe armoured cables, likewise, have an extruded innersheath to ensure a perfect gland seal in accordance withthe new IEC recommendations for the installation ofcables in hazardous environments.
This catalogue also features the series of cables specifi-cally designed not only for low-voltage but also medium-voltage variable frequency drive (VFD) power cables.
The safety of people and equipment is a key considera-tion in the design and construction of Exzhellent-Marcables. The polymer compounds used in their manufactu-re are halogen-free, and give off low opaque smoke andacid gas emissions in accordance with the relevant IECstandards. Exzhellent-Mar may therefore be used in criti-cal equipment zones or in the crews quarters, where aview of escape routes and low gas toxicity levels allow forquick, safe evacuation. The cables are also designed tocomply with strict non-fire propagation standards, whichsimulate fire conditions, similar to those that might arise inreal life in vessel construction, through the use of largebundles of cables and, therefore, inflammable material. These standards are established to prevent a fire sprea-ding along the cables. The cables are also available withfire-resistant designs featuring the properties mentionedabove plus the capacity to remain in service even in theevent of fire, an aspect which enables emergency equip-ment, PA and safety, etc. circuits to continue working.

Exzhellent-Mar cables may be used in extreme climates,as demonstrated in their compliance with the requisites ofthe CSA 22.2 standard involving the cold bending test at-40 C and the impact test at -35 C.
The armoured cables feature standard bare copper braidthat provides good mechanical protection and may alsobe used in specific applications such as screening.

InsulationThe insulation compound, when in contact with the cop-per conductor, gives the cable its electrical protectionproperties.
MaterialsLow and high-voltage insulation:
HF XLPE, cross-linked polyethylene compound designedfor halogen-free low and high-voltage cables.Thermosetting compound without heat distortion and withexcellent electrical and mechanical properties.
High-voltage insulation (VFD cable type):
HF EPR, ethylene propylene rubber compound for halo-gen-free high-voltage cables. Thermosetting compoundwithout heat distortion and excellent electrical and mecha-nical properties.
-
SheathThe outer sheath protects the group of elements that formthe cable from the mechanical and environmental aggres-sion it may undergo during and after its installation.Mechanical aggression comes mainly from abrasion thatmay arise during laying from ducts and support racks, while environmental aggression may occur throughout itsuseful life from heat sources or the sporadic presence ofoils or other products.
SHF1, a thermoplastic polyolefin halogen-free compoundthat emits neither toxic nor corrosive gases in the event offire. High protection for people and equipment. Weakresistance to oils and fuels.
ArmourArmour provide the cable with mechanical protection. Inthe shipbuilding industry, iron wire braid was previouslyused as armour. This material, however, is not suitable forsingle-pole cables, which require the use of a non-mag-netic material, in this case bare copper. Copper performsbetter than galvanised steel and is therefore now usedthroughout the range of cables.
Copper has a two-fold function in the armour as it notonly acts as armour, but can also be used for screening.
In cables for variable frequency drives (VFD), bronze isused as armour material.

ScreenIn low-voltage cables, screen protects the cable againstlow- and high-frequency electric and electromagneticfields. It is particularly suitable for instrumentation, controland signal transmission cables the sensitivity of which todisturbance can distort the signal transmitted by thecable. Protection of the cable from radiation requires thescreening of the groups of conductors (from exteriorpollution) or of each pair or triad (from the electromagne-tic fields of other elements in the same cable).
According to the standard, screens may come in copperbraid, metal/polyester tape or a combination of both.
In armoured cables, if copper braid is used as armour andthe cable is appropriately grounded, the copper braidmay also be used as the cables screen(1).
Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC)General Cable products comply with electromagneticcompatibility requirements, provided that the conditionsestablished in IEC standard 60533 (see EMC section onthe Technical Information page 26) have been followedupon installation.

FIRE PERFORMANCE OFCABLESTo establish how cables perform in the event of fire, aseries of standards have been developed to define fireconditions and measure the cables performance in asimilar situation to that of the installation. It should nonet-heless be remembered that these tests establish fixed, reproducible conditions used to appraise the performan-ce of the cables in this situation.
Current IEC standards envisage the following events:
- Non-flame propagation(IEC 60332-1-2)
A 1-kW flame in contact with thecable sheath for a time establishedin the standard should not spread. The cable will not therefore prompta fire caused by a minor incident orby an external heat source withwhich it comes into accidental con-tact.
- Non-fire propagation(IEC 60332-3-22)A fire unconnected with the cablemay affect a wiring system andbecome more serious if the systemis oriented vertically, thus allowingthe circulation of air and the crea-tion of a chimney effect. If thedecomposition temperature of theorganic materials is reached, exot-hermic combustion of the cablesoccurs and the fire spreads. Theinsulation compounds used inExzhellent-Mar cable sheaths aredesigned to hinder exothermic reac-tion. To simulate this situation, thetest involves the application ofpowered air and a 20-kW gas bur-ner to a bundle of cables arrangedto simulate a vertical wiring system. In these conditions, a fire in thecables prolonged for 40 must goout in the time established in thestandard and must not exceed a

Fire resistance (IEC 60331)IEC 60331 defines the test conditions applied to a cablethat must remain in service in safety circuits even whendirectly affected by a fire and when its organic parts aredecomposing.
In the test, the cable is subject to the action of a burnerat a minimum flame temperature of 830 C for a period of90 minutes, during and at the end of which the cablemust remain in service.

Halogen-free and low smoke emissioncables.Cables subject to fire, depending on the materials ofwhich they are made, may give off gases that are toxic forpeoples health or corrosive and therefore hinder the pro-per operation and preservation of the electronic and ITcomponents in the vicinity. Opaque smoke that preventsa view of the escape routes from the affected sites mayalso be given off.
To minimise these effects, General Cable has developedthe Exzhellent series cables that eliminate harmful emis-sions of halogenated and toxic gases (IEC 60754-1 and60754-2), substantially reduce opaque smokes and thusfacilitate the evacuation of people (IEC 61034-2) (seeappendix 2).

The cable names include the number of phase conduc-tors plus neutral if applicable, (N) and section (S), whichare combined in the expression NxS (e.g.: 3x1.5). Thesuffix +E is added when one of the conductors must bean earthing one NxS+E, with E as the section of theconductor. For the cable in the above example, if one ofthe conductors must be an earthing one (yellow-green), itwill be called 2x1.5+1,5.

Uo es el valor eficaz entre un conductor aislado cual-quiera y tierra (pantalla metlica del cable o medio cir-cundante);
U es el valor eficaz entre dos conductores aisladoscualquiera de un cable multipolar o de una red de cablesunipolares;
22
RATED VOLTAGERated voltage is defined by the combination of the follo-wing values of Uo/U expressed in kV:
Uo is the effective value between any insulated conduc-tor and earth (metal screen of the cable or surroundingenvironment);
U is the effective value between any two insulated con-ductors of a multi-core cable or of a network of single-core cables;
CURRENT CARRYING CAPACITIESThe maximum intensities admissible for Exzhellent Marcables appear in the guidelines for use and rules of theClassification Societies. However, those used in the mostcommon installation method, shown in table 5 of IEC60092-352, conductor working temperature of 90 C andenvironmental temperature of 45 C, are provided for gui-dance purposes. The specified values are based on thefollowing installation conditions:
- Multi-conductor cables installed outdoors, installationmethod E
- Single-pole conductors in contact with the air inclover-leaf formation, installation method F
For other installation conditions, see tables of intensitiesin said IEC standard 60092-352.
The correction factors applicable for temperatures diffe-rent from those mentioned or for groups of cables thatappear in this IEC standard 60092-352 must also betaken into consideration.
SHORT-CIRCUIT CURRENTSElectrical networks must be able to withstand, withoutundergoing permanent damage, the intense currents thatoccur under fault (short-circuit) either in the network or inthe receivers connected to it. These are short-durationcurrents (which last a few seconds at most) and disappe-ar upon activation of the protection mechanisms thatshould exist for this purpose.
Their thermal impact may nonetheless be very significantas the through intensity is much higher than normal andgeneration of heat per unit of time depends on the squa-re of this intensity. There may be several ways of calcula-ting short-circuit currents (single-, two-, and three-phase), the most simple being the three-pole short-circuitas a symmetrical network status occurs.

SCREENINGThe function of control and instrumentation cables is totransmit signals. The nearby presence of electromagneticfields can disturb the signals, which makes screeningessential.
Variable frequency drive type cables potentially generatesuch electromagnetic interference (EMI) because of theeffect of harmonics at high frequencies. Screening provi-des a barrier against EMI and protects electrical equip-ment in the vicinity of the cable.
In instrumentation cables, collective screening protectsthe conductors from external EMI while individual screensprovide this protection against the mutual interference ofpairs/triads.
The frequency interval of EMI at which screening is requi-red depends on the function a specific cable must fulfil ina given installation. Screens must be made of copper wirebraid or aluminium or copper/polyester tape. Braid com-bines high flexibility with low electrical resistance, whichprovides good screening against low-frequency EMI.Metal/polyester tape screens also combine a very lightweight with high conductor sheathing, which providesgood screening against high-frequency EMI.
To ensure screens are effective they must be earthed atboth ends at 360 and have very low impedance. Thisguarantees perfect confinement of the electric field andmaximum possible reduction of the magnetic field.
The transfer impedance factor provides for measurementof the screens effectiveness. Thorough analysis of thisfactor for different screen types shows that a screen thatcombines braid and a metal/polyester tape provides bet-ter protection for a broad range of frequencies.
