The Start
- Industrial Revolution = The transition to new manufacturing processes beginning in the mid-1700s.
- Industrialization = Process of developing machine production of goods, requires natural resources.
Agricultural Progress
- Wealthy landowners bought up land from village farmers. - Larger fields known as Enclosures. - Pushed peasants to move to cities, work in factories.
Why Britain?- Had population for work force. - Water power/Coal to fuel machines. - Iron ore to build machines, tools, and buildings. - Rivers for inland transportation. - Harbors for merchant ships to sail in/out of. - Sum it up: They had the natural resources required for
Industrialization.

- Land - Labor - Capital (wealth)
Textile Industry - Textile industry first to be changed by Indus. Rev. - Agricultural Rev. led to population boom, demand for
clothing increased. - Had an impact worldwide.
Transportation Improvements- The key contribution was James Watt’s Steam Engine. - Provided cheap, convenient source of power. - Could power boats, paved way for road transportation.
Beginning of the Railroad Age- Railroads revolutionized life in Britain. - Cheap way to transport products. - Created 1,000s of new jobs (miners and railroad workers). - Boosted agricultural and fishing industries. - Country folk could take city jobs; city dwellers could
vacation in the country.
