Enzenberger, and Malcom Cottle
INDUCTION• Induction is an argument that moves
from particular examples to an opinion about them.
• Ex. “Aunt Lu smokes and is healthy. Mr. Ronk next door smokes and is healthy. Hey, everyone I know who smokes is healthy. Therefore, smoking isn’t really that dangerous.”
DEDUCTION• Taking a generalization and predicting specific
examples.
• Ex. “If, from reading the hierarchy of facts about the machine, the mechanic knows the horn of the cycle is powered exclusively by electricity from the battery, then he can logically infer that if the battery is dead the horn will not work.”
Quality
• Quality describes a noun that is marked by time, commitment, and effort.
DEDUCING
• Ferrari makes quality cars.• All models have handmade engines.• The leather seats are all stitched by hand.• The paint must meet thickness standards to
pass inspection.• Therefore, quality is an adjective describing
something of the highest value created by commitment of the most skilled workers.
INDUCING
• Handmade crafts are quality.• Home-grown vegetables are quality.• Home-cooked meals are quality.
• Therefore, quality can describe products that are handmade using time and commitment.
