ge As you will see from Year 12 Coordinator, Ash Weier’s article and photographs on the following pages, despite the challenges faced in sending our Year 12s off after completing their schooling years, two memorable Graduation ceremonies last Friday achieved this. Led by Ash, with particular support from Ross Muir and Derek Weeks, our whole staff threw themselves into this event: teachers, support and administrative staff, facilities and grounds officers, cleaners and other volunteers all stepped up to ensure the creation of a wonderful environment that adhered to COVID-19 compliance requirements. As a school community, we are very proud of our 2020 Graduates, who have demonstrated admirable courage, resilience and determination throughout this year. We wish them all the very best in pursuing their own particular pathways and that their futures will be happy, fulfilling and all they would wish.

I just wanted to remind you of the Queensland Government's decision that, in recognition of the efforts of school-based staff during the COVID-19 health pandemic, the 2020 school year will end two days early. The last two days of the school year – Thursday 10 and Friday 11 December 2020 – will be student free days and schools will be closed on these days. Please note that there will be no staff at Indooroopilly State High School

on 10 and 11 December, with the last day that students are able to attend school being Wednesday 9 December.

Our staff Christmas lunch will be held on 9 December. The school has engaged supply teachers to provide supervision for students at school on that day from 11.30am so that all teaching and support staff can participate in the lunch and farewells to staff members departing our school. For this purpose, the School Office and Student Services will be closed from 11.30am-2.00pm and I ask if

you have any need to contact the school on that day you please do so before or after those times. Should you have an urgent need to contact the school within that timeframe, please call our emergency phone number, 0459 866 960.

As the interior of our new Multi-Purpose Hall comes closer to completion, I thought you would enjoy a photo taken late last week. If not able to be utilised at the very start of next year, our students will have access to the MPH early next year, something very exciting to which we can return.

Lois O'ReillyExecutive Principal

The Multi-Purpose Hall will be an impressive addition to our school in early 2021.

UN DayUnited Nations Day is an important annual event in the school calendar. As with all major events in 2020, we were posed with some challenges that required some creative problem-solving. A re-imagined United Nations Celebration took place for our school community on Wednesday 18 November. The alfresco event featured the customary Flag and Costume Parades together with speeches from our School Captains and Mrs O’Reilly. You will find photos of the performances and parades within. Thank you to the staff and students who took part as audience members or as flag bearers, speakers or costumed participants. You made this special event something to remember. Thanks in particular to Katie Bailey, Head of Department – Learning & Teaching, and English as an Additional Language for leading the organisation of this year’s celebration.Derek Weeks Senior School PrincipalUN Day report and photos: pages 6-7

Following the stresses of their external exams, Year 12s returned for just two days of classes during which they had an opportunity to catch up with each of their class teachers one last time. To get the good vibes flowing early on, the Year 12s enjoyed a long-time tradition upon their return to school on Wednesday. During our final Year Level Assembly students experienced a touch of nostalgia as they witnessed the transformation of themselves and their peers from Year 7s to Year 12s to the sounds of music indicative of celebration and optimism for the future. Our Graduation Ceremony was held on Friday in two separate ceremonies, a product of COVID restrictions. Whilst this saw students not being able to share in the one ceremony, what it did offer was a very different kind of ceremony enjoyed on the oval on a beautiful, mild Spring day. Each Year 12 student received a Graduation Folio in two graduating groups – the International Baccalaureate Diploma students and the Queensland Curriculum Assessment Authority students. We have an amazing array of talent in Year 12 and this year, the students lucky enough to perform at the Ceremony were April Chin, Lewin Cooney, Max Coop, Eddy Curwen, Marco Fu, David Hoey, Patrick McClement, Noah Mikkelsen, Misha Perich, Naomi Peterson, Shanu Sobti, Anneke Vos, Helen Wang, Baxter Wise and Melvin Wong. These performances greatly entertained our audience of students, families and staff, adding that extra special atmosphere to the day. Eddy Curwen and Shanu Sobti, our General Captains, delivered the Welcome Speech and Valedictory Address together. They had us reminiscing and laughing, allowing their unique personalities to run wild and offering perceptive reflections of being graduating Indro students. They also shared words of hope and optimism for the futures of our graduating class. We are very proud of the resilience that this cohort demonstrated during what was a tough year. We also appreciate the contributions that this group of students have made to the fabric of Indooroopilly State High School, including the events that took place during the final days of Year 12, allowed for all the school and parent community to celebrate their achievements and to wish them well. In my final address to the Year 12 cohort I drew on the words of our good friend, Dr. Seuss:“You’re on your own. And you know what you know. And you are the one who’ll decide where to go.” As frightening or overwhelming as this independence may seem, remember that the freedom to determine your own future is a privilege and an opportunity for you to carve your own slice of happiness. If you go forward with optimism, purpose and belief in yourself, “Kid, you’ll move mountains!”Year 12s – you are dismissed!Ash Weier Year 12 Coordinator

Year 9 Digital Technologies work with Edison robotsThis Term, the Year 9 Digital Technologies students have been working with Edison robots. The Edison is an educational robot that requires students to use a text-based coding language called Python. This unit challenges the students to become creative thinkers and problem solvers as they code the Edisons to perform different activities. Some of the tasks students have coded the Edison to perform include:

• Driving in a square and use loops to repeat the process • Playing a tune using a string of notes • Dancing and doing the shimmy • Detecting a clap and then perform a task once the clap has been detected • Following a line using the line sensor • Avoiding obstacles using the infra-red obstacle detection sensor

For assessment, the students have worked collaboratively to design a solution to a real-world problem that robots can be used to solve. They have then coded the Edison to perform this simulated solution and have recorded the robot performing this task. While this unit has had its challenges, students have also enjoyed the practical, hands-on learning.

The Year 11 cohort attended their annual Social function on Friday 13 November. Along the scenic banks of the Brisbane River at Riverlife, Kangaroo Point, students enjoyed the sunset, the city lights, and the fun trivia. Despite being unable to dance due to COVID, the atmosphere did not suffer, all thanks to the amazing music and the efforts of the social committee and staff, who organised the setup, food and photography. It was clear that everyone had put their best foot forward and exposed their true fashion skills, as everyone was dressed to impress. It was a wonderful night to come together as a cohort and celebrate the end of Year 11.

Junior Arts JourneyJunior Arts Journey is a celebration of the outstanding creative work that students have created during Semester 2.

Students from the subjects Year 7 MMADD (Music, Media, Art, Dance and Drama) and Music Acceleration, Year 8 Music, Visual Media Technology and Theatrical Movement Studies as well as Year 9 Media, Music, Dance, Drama and Visual Art will present their live work over 2 nights in the school Hall (Monday 30 November and Tuesday 1 December) and virtually through

online spaces from Monday 30 November to Monday 7 December.

Junior Arts students have been asked to respond to the concept of ‘reflections’ through their collaborative work and develop an entertaining performance for the stage, which must encompass all of The Arts forms. Through the 10 week intensive process, students are responsible for all facets of the show – composing or cutting music, choreographing and/or presenting dance, blocking and performing dramatic elements,

designing and creating sets and props as well as costuming and finally the addition of media components such as pre-filming or video work. The works on display through our virtual spaces showcase the high quality work created by students. Junior Art Journey definitely presents a ‘journey’ of our Indro Arts students, as they travel through the creative process, into resolved work and out towards the end of the year.

In the first week of November, students gathered in Q block each lunchtime for a week to take part in activities to learn about the Mexican Day of the Dead tradition.

A highlight of the school year, our Languages teachers coordinated a week full of activities and cultural crafts for students to do a deep dive into this fascinating Mexican cultural tradition. Students explored different perspectives on life and death through the practices and beliefs present in Mexican and prehispanic culture, and came to understand the celebration of life and joy that the Day of the Dead represents. Students decorated classrooms with fanciful and festive skulls in bright colours, made miniature clay skulls to paint, watched popular films about Day of the Dead, and had the opportunity to contribute to traditional altar decorations.

On Friday we engaged students in another Mexican tradition and brought in a piñata which was very popular, and as the final hit broke open the piñata in a spray of colour and sugar, students shouted with glee as they ran to find the prizes scattered across the courtyard. It was a worthwhile week of learning and celebration, with many students across all year levels taking part. Next year will no doubt be even bigger and better. Thank you to all of the students who took part, and to the dedicated Languages teachers who offered their time and expertise to provide students an unforgettable week of cultural discovery and fun!

Student reflections" I really liked the way that it was happy and festive rather than being all sad. My friends and I made skulls out of clay, which we got to paint afterwards, and we made paper skull masks, hit the piñata, and pinned the sombrero on the skeleton. We did a lot of things."

Magdalena, Year 7

"During the Day of the Dead week, we had a lot of fun participating in many activities both in class and out of class. We decorated our classroom with day of the dead altars, photos of loved ones that have passed, and food. Some of the Spanish teachers also held different events throughout the week such as piñatas, movies, clay skull making and skull drawing. Overall it was a very joyful week and it was great to experience a part of Mexico’s culture."

Body image is about how you see yourself—your perceptions and feelings about your own body. This may include your height, shape, or weight.

If you have a healthy body image you feel comfortable in your own skin, are happy most of the time with the way you look and feel good about yourself. It’s about valuing who you are, not what you look like.

If you have a negative body image, you may have a false view of your body size or shape and may feel uncomfortable, ashamed, or self-conscious. Poor body image is often linked to ‘fad’ dieting or eating disorders.

Potential causes of unhealthy body image:

• being pressured to measure up to certain social and cultural ideals of what is attractive • being pressured to look slim or athletic

• comparing yourself to celebrities and media personalities

• listening to negative comments from friends or family about your shape or size • being bullied or teased as a child/adolescent.

Tips for a healthy body image• remember that health and appearance are different things • keep a list of your positive qualities that have nothing to do with your appearance • surround yourself with people who are supportive and who make you feel good about yourself • treat your body with respect and kindness • achieve a healthy weight.

Design Awards nomineesThe Design & Technologies faculty would like to recognise the stellar work of its students in 2020, including Yuval, Liam, Jamie, Morgan and Ash, who were nominated for the Design and Technology Teachers’ Association (DATTA) Student Subject Awards. Congratulations to Yuval, who has been selected as a state finalist in the DATTA Student Subject Awards.

Lyn McErlean Head of Department - Design & Technologies

Yuval State finalist, Year 9 Design & Technologies category

Yuval was nominated by his teacher for the outstanding design articulation and construction of his solar car. Students were given a solar panel kit and learned about engineering principles, gears ratio and aerodynamics to build a solar-powered vehicle out of scrap materials. The concept car had to travel across a set distance with maximum speed while carrying two eggs that had to survive a crash test at its maximal velocity. Yuval completed the task using left over metal and thought about all of the design criteria to come up with an effective design independently.

Liam Nominated for his work in Year 11 Design

3D printing is an optional extension activity for Design and Art, Liam has produced a number of projects demonstrating his advanced skill levels. Projects included a 3D rendering of a human figure he drew for a Visual Art project and a watch face for a project exploring design styles. In Year 11 Design he took a group prototype of a building which was made of corflute and rendered into a scaled 3D model, which allowed for purposeful discussion about the features of the design. Liam has refined his ability and skill to an impressive standard.

Jamie and Morgan Nominated for their work in Year 11 Design & Technologies

As part of a group assessment, Jamie and Morgan designed a World Expo pavilion for a chosen nation. Their work on a Greek pavilion showed a thorough understanding of the design process, had a high level of research and application of analysis and they had created an exciting design that addressed the design task in a sophisticated and unique way. Their presentation and visual communication skills were excellent and they used a colour scheme throughout their folio that reflected the country they had chosen as the basis for the design task.

Ash Nominated for his work in Certificate II Engineering Pathways, Certificate I in Construction and Cert II in Furniture Making Pathways

Ash, a Year 12 student, was described by his teachers as ‘the all-rounder’: “He is the definition of ‘a job well done’ and ‘If it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing right.’ Ash approaches all tasks in the workshop with enthusiasm and a keen attention to detail. For his teachers it is like having an additional teacher aide in the room as his willingness to do a job correctly extends to his peers.”

Congratulations to Indro Year 8 student Tridev, who won a rising star award in the First LEGO League Challenge regional qualification tournament at the weekend. Tridev and Keanu, his friend from St Eugene College, built a robot from LEGO and programmed it to complete a series of tasks such as picking up a ball and throwing it into a basketball hoop. The pair also had to present a project talk on their idea for a sports-themed innovation: a shoe-sole sensor made of graphite that would read info on pressure and angles to give performance statistics for coaching. Awesome work!

We’re proud of Indro’s incoming School Captains, Marianna and Rubin, who have been accepted to join the Griffith University Future Leaders Retreat in January. The three days of networking with other young leaders and presentations from inspiring speakers will give Marianna and Rubin insights and skills to bring back to their leadership group and peers for 2021.

Congratulations to Indro’s Opti-MINDs teams, who shone in the virtual state finals of this creative problem-solving challenge. Our Social Sciences team (Nilia, Aubarito, Elizabeth, Kennedy, Ling and Najwa) won Division II. Our Science Engineering team (Jack, Subish, Leon, Akshay, Taha, Sheras and Zachary) earned honours in Division II.

Aviation is a subject for students who are looking forward to either a career in aviation or flying for pleasure.

Students are able to enrol in Aviation in Years 10, 11 and 12. Students go to a flying school at Archerfield Airport each week during the year. Initially students aim to perform their first solo flight, and must be 15 years of age to do so.

Students work towards a Recreational Pilot Licence (RPL) and, after successfully completing navigation flights, gain a Private Pilot Licence. Students will be required to pay their chosen flying school each week for their lesson. This is a pay-as-you-go arrangement with the hire rate of an aircraft and instructor plus landing fees and briefing. It is a significant expense, details of which are available from each flying school.

The theory, comprising Flight Radio Operator’s Licence (FROL), Basis Aeronautical Knowledge (BAK) and Private Pilot Licence Theory (PPL) is

studied during Wednesday briefings and at home.

Topics include aircraft familiarisation, aviation terminology, Communications, aircraft general knowledge and control, rules and procedures of flight, theory of flight, meteorology and navigation. Students also have the ability to practise flights in the school’s flight simulator.

It is preferable for students to complete the aviation medical and apply for an Aviation Security Identification Card (ASIC) and student pilot licence before commencing flight training, as the first solo flight is not permitted until the documentation has been processed by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA).

Are you the caregiver of a typically developing child aged between 6-17 years?

We need your help!Researchers at the Child Health Research Centre are doing a study to assess health outcomes of children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). As a comparison, we are looking to gather information from Australian caregivers and typically developing children.

With your help, our study hopes to fill in the gaps and learn more about how Australian children have been impacted by prenatal alcohol exposure. Ultimately, this will help to develop interventions to improve the health and wellbeing of individuals with FASD and their families.

Who can be in the study?Australian caregivers and their typically developing children (aged 6-17 years).

What is required?Children will participate in a range of non-invasive assessments of their health and wellbeing. For example,

this will include collecting your child’s blood pressure, body composition using the Bodpod, and a brief number of cognitive measures. A brief summary report will be provided of the assessment results.

Caregivers will be required to complete a questionnaire asking about your child’s health and wellbeing. For example, including questions about their sleep, eating, exercise, and behavior.

Where is the location?62 Graham St South Brisbane (right near South Bank). We can provide free on-site parking.
