FROMEDITOR’SDESK

Dear Valued Readers,

Chocolate and other chocolate-based food have become more and more popular. There are countries which are famous for their delicious chocolate, especially those in Europe and America. Not only delicious, chocolate is also known for its good, healthy properties making its consumption is on the rise.

These kind of food require ingredients from cocoa, such as cocoa butter and cocoa powder. Cocoa lives most fertile in tropical region such as Indonesia, which is known as a world's major producer after Ghana and Ivory Coast.

Currently cocoa processing industry in Indonesia has grown, thanks to the support given by the government through downstreaming policy and quality standard for cocoa. The government expects the supply of processed cocoa products will increase and Indonesia can meet the demands in both domestic and international markets with guaranteed quality.

The November edition of Export News discusses Indonesian cocoa powder, from its export development to other relevant information, which is needed by the readers before deciding to buy the product. As usual, we also include a list of exporters so that interested buyers can contact them directly for a beneficial trade relations.

Cocoa is one of Indonesian leading exports and has a role in the country's economy as one of foreign exchange contributors in the plantation sector. In 2009, the Indonesian government launched

a national program to increase the quality and production cocoa, locally known by its acronym Gernas Pro Kakao. The program focuses on revitalization, rehabilitation and intensification of

Cocoa plantations especially in production centers such as Sulawesi, North Sumatra, West Sumatra and East Java.

As of 2013, there were 1.6 million hectares of cocoa plantation in Indonesia. There are area increases in some production centers while some others losing area. The government hopes that cocoa production will increase through Gernas Pro Kakao. The Indonesian cocoa Farmers Association (APKAI) estimates that Indonesian cocoa production this year increases by 10% to 20% when compared to last year's figure.

The efforts to increase Indonesian cocoa production is conducted mainly to meet domestic demands for industrial cocoa beans. In previous years, Indonesian cocoa export was dominated by cocoa beans so the added value was very minimum. On the other hand, Indonesian cocoa -processing industry was forced to conduct imports to meet its needs. However, things have changed in the past three years. The export of cocoa beans have decreased after the government imposed export tax for cocoa beans. As a result, the cocoa-producing industry is growing and absorbing more cocoa beans. With abundant supply of cocoa beans, the domestic cocoa-processing industry can fully utilize its capacity in turn increasing the export of processed cocoa products, including cocoa powder.

Other than the program and policy, the Indonesian agriculture ministry will also apply the Indonesian National Standard (SNI) to guarantee the quality of Indonesian cocoa beans. In the past, most of Indonesian cocoa beans were not fermented so the chocolate arome did not come out from the beans. On the other hand, cocoa-processing industry needs fermented cocoa bean as its raw material. The SNI was issued on May 21, 2014 and will be effective in 2016. BY applying the SNI, the quality of cocoa derivative products from Indonesia will be greatly improved.

Cocoa powder is a derivative product from Cocoa bean which is produced together with cocoa butter when cocoa liquour is being pressed. There are plenty of products which use coca butter such as pastry, dairy products, confectionary and other food types. Cocoa butter and cocoa powder have close relations both in production and pricing which are indirectly related.

In the past five years, there has been no special pattern for prices of cocoa butter and cocoa powder, however, most industry consider both products as subsitutes. Recently the price of cocoa butter has been increasing which affects increasing production cost for Cocoa-processing industry. On the other hand, the price of Cocoa powder in Europe has decreased by 30% since Jan. 1, 2014 down to €1,183 or US$1,618 per ton on June 27, 2014.

Market Review

Such conditions have led a number of large processer to shift to use Cocoa powder as raw material replacing cocoa butter. This phenomenon usually takes place in Asia and Eastern Europe while in a number of developed countries, it is not the case. Customers in developed countries have less preference on chocolate products laced with Cocoa powder.

The Cocoa Association of Asia said that Cocoa-processing industry in Asia suffered decreasing production in the third quarter of 2014. The International Cocoa and Coffee Organization (ICCO) said the slump was due to decreasing joint Cocoa ratio (the price of cocoa butter and cocoa powder when compared to Cocoa beans) which led to decreasing profits for Cocoa-processing industry. However, it does not mean that there was low demand for Cocoa powder in Asia because there are plenty of Cocoa powder types and industries.Indonesia, as one of the world's largest producers of Cocoa and its processed products, has earned the trust from large Cocoa companies, such as Cargill. Banking on increasing demand for cocoa powder in Asia, Cargill is currently building a factory in Indonesia. Having a factory in Indonesia, Cargill can guarantee a supply of cocoa powder so as to meet its customers' demands. Cargill is also developing its own factory in the Netherlands.

Other company which has also built a chocolate factory in Indonesia is Barry Callebaut AG (BARN), one of the largest player in Cocoa processing industry. This year, the company built a factory with a capacity of 30,000 metric tons.
