the student energy story

Since 2009 the International Student Energy Summit has become the largest conference on students on energy, it has been hosted in Vancouver, Norway, Indonesia, Mexico, and in 2019 it will move to London, UK. Our student network is Student Energy’s greatest success story, with over 50,000 students engaged with Student Energy from over 135 countries. Our alumni have gone on to found solar companies, advise the United Nations, and work with some of the most influential energy companies on the planet.

Student Energy has kept evolving in order to meet the needs of young people looking to make a difference in energy, climate and sustainability. We host the Energy Systems Map: an ed-tech tool that has connected over 3 million people to the information they need to get engaged with the energy system. We facilitate Student Energy Chapters: university level clubs where we help students develop the skills they need to be energy leaders, take action on energy, and engage their peers.

Ours is a uniquely Canadian success story. In 2009, three students at the University of Calgary decided they wanted to contribute to the conversations that were determining the future of energy. Yet, in attending traditional energy conferences, there were no spaces for youth to have a voice or to ask the questions they had about sustainability. Refusing to accept the circumstances that left them without a seat at the table, they took matters into their own hands. What started out as one ambitious idea: an interna-tional conference on energy for students, with the leading energy experts and industry leaders in the world engaging with youth, turned into something much bigger.

our objectives

why sevengen? Our name is inspired by the Lakota prophecy that says the seventh generation is the one that will bring and lead change. Indigenous youth today are the seventh generation who can and will lead change and restore peace

As we lead this summit and aim to inspire youth and all energy leaders. As they make decisions and lead change we want them to embody another part of the seventh generation principle that says the decisions we make today should be sustainable seven generations into the future.
