    PMcallsforincreasedR&DexpenditureInauguratingthe99th IndianScienceCongress(ISC)atBhubaneshwar inOdishaon January3,PrimeMinisterDr.Manmohan Singh called for changing the face of Indian science and increasing the spending on research anddevelopment(R&D)totwopercentoftheGDPfromthecurrent0.9percentbytheendoftheTwelfthFiveyearPlan(201217). He said this could only be achieved if industry,which contributed only 25 percent of the total R&Dexpendituretoday,increaseditscontribution.Wemuststrengthenthesupplychainofthesciencesector, PrimeMinister Singh said in his address attheISC.ThePrimeministerinformedthataproposalwas under consideration to build national capacityand capability in supercomputing which would beimplemented by the Indian Institute of Science,Bangalore,atanestimatedcostof$1billion.PrimeMinister Singhpointedout that over the lastfew years the number of scientific publications byIndian scientists working in India had increased atmorethan12percentperannumagainst theglobalaverageof4percent.Indiahadmovedfromthe15thrankin2003tothe9thrankin2010withrespecttothenumberofpublicationsinpeervaluedjournals.More than 15,000 delegates participated in theJanuary37eventheldattheKalingaInstituteofIndustrial Technology in Odisha.     Crowningglory:IndiraGandhiInternationalAirportsecondbestintheworldTheEconomicTimes:NewDelhi:Delhi'sIGIairporthasbeenrankedthesecondbestairportintheworldfor2011bytheAirportsCouncilInternational.Theairportscoredthisdistinctioninthecategoryofairportswith2540millionpassengersperannum.Lastyear,ithadbeenrankedfourthinthesamecategory.Theairportscored4.72ofapossible5intheairportservicequalityindex,coming6intheoverallairportrankingfor2011.Thisisamassivejumpfortheairportwhich,beforeprivatizationin2007,hadscored3.02ontheASQanddidnotmanagearankinthetop100.DelhiInternationalAirport(P)Ltd(DIAL)commendedtheeffortsofagenciessuchascustoms,immigration,CISF,airlines,concessionaires,housekeepingandothersupportstaffforcontributingtotheimagemakeoverfortheairport.DIAL'sCEOIPrabhakaraRaosaid:"IGIAhascomealongwayinthelastfiveyearssincewetookover.WehaveensuredthatqualityhasbecomeawayoflifenotjustwithDIALemployees,butwithallstakeholdersoftheIGIairportfamily.Weareconfidentthatall30,000plusmembersoftheIGIairportfamilywillcontinuetostriveforexcellenceandwehopetoimproveourpositionevenfurtherinthecomingyears."IGIairporthandledarecordnumberof35millionpassengersin2011.Theairporthasanannualpassengercapacityofover60millionofwhichterminal3canalonehandle34millionpassengers.Theairportalsohandledover6lakhtonnesofcargoandover3lakhaircraftmovementsin2011.AirportsCouncilInternationalistheonlyglobaltraderepresentativeofairportswith580membersoperatingfrom1,650airportsin179countriesandterritories.

    India'sfirstmonorailtestedinMumbaiBusiness Standard:Mumbai: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) on SaturdayconductedanelectricaltrialrunoftheMumbaimonorail, fromWadalatoMysoreColonyadistanceof4.5km.Thefirstphaseoftheproject,fromWadalatoChembur,isexpectedtobecompletedbyNovember2012.TheprojectisbeingimplementedbyMMRDA,withLarsen&Toubro(L&T)andaconsortiumofMalaysianinfrastructureScomiEngineering.DilipKawathkar,jointprojectdirector(PR),MMRDA,said:"ThisisoneoftheelectricaltrialrunsthatweconductedonSaturday.PhaseIofthemonorailisexpectedtobecompletedbylateOctoberorNovemberthisyear."TheprojectthatwouldconnectWadalatoChembur(8.26km)inPhaseIandJacobCircletoWadala(11.28km)inPhaseII,willreducetraveltimebetweenthetwolocalitiesfrom90minutesto44minutes.Thetentativefarestructureonthestretch,accordingtoMMRDA,willrangefromRs8toRs20.Theprojectscopewillinvolvedesign,construction, operation and maintenance (for three years) of the monorail system between Jacob Circle andChembur. It is being done under an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract. The 19.56kmcorridor will cost around Rs 2,460 crore (plus taxes) for the two phases. The second phase is expected to becompletedbythesecondquarterof2013.ThecivilworkonthelineinPhaseIislikelytoendbyAugustandthetrialrunscouldbeginthereafter.

    Infosys,WiproamongtopglobalcompaniesinsmartgridsoftwareTheHinduBusinessLine:Chennai:InfosysandWiprohavebeennamedamongthetopsevenvendorsintheworldofsmartgridsoftware,arecentresearchreportofGTMResearchhassaid.Smartgridsarethosethathaveelectricaldeviceswith embedded software that cangiveout a fundofdata inorder that the gridmaybebettermanaged.Softwareisakeypartofsmartgrids.GTMResearch,awellknowngreentechresearchcompany,soughttofindoutwho the Big Fish are in each segment of smart grid software. Under the head Utility systems development andintegration,dataanalyticsandcybersecurity',GTMhasnamedsevencompanies.InfosysandWiproareintheelitecompanyoffiveotherglobalgiantsIBM,Oracle,Siemens,AccentureandSchneiderElectric.Eveninthiswellknitworld,havingtwohomegrownbiggiesisseenasanadvantagebecausesmartgridisanareathatspeciallyrequireslocalknowledge.SeveralexpertshavecommentedontheuniquenessoftheIndiangridandhencetheuniquenessoftheopportunitiesanyrevampingofitprovides.AtaconferenceinMumbaionsmartgrid,DrRajitGadh,ProfessoratUniversityofCalifornia,LosAngeles(UCLA),stressedontheimportanceofdeterminingthelocalnuancesoftheIndianmarket.Speaking toBusinessLinelastweek,MrAnandPadmanabhan, SeniorVicePresident,Energy,NaturalResources&Utilities,WiproTechnologies,notedthatIndiaischaracterisedbytheneedtomanagedemandratherthansupplyofelectricity, very different from the developed countries. Wipro and Infosys have experience of having workedabroadonsmartgridsandwith theirknowledgeof India too,arewellplaced toserve theneedsof theemergingsmartgridinIndia.Accordingtoareport(ofZpryme)theIndiangovernmentwillspend$11billiontoreducelinelosses to less than 15 percent in five years in urban and highdensity areas. Onefifth of those funds will bededicatedtousingITatstaterundistributioncompanies.ITcompanieshavesolutionssuchasbackendsolutions,remote infrastructuremaintenance,CRM, systems integrations.Wiproand Infosys alsoknowsmart grid. India isseenastheplacewheresmartgridcouldbebuiltfromthescratch,leapfroggingseveraltechnologiesthatemergedandexpiredinthelastseveralyears.Withtheexperienceofhavingworkedabroad,WiproknowswhatneedstobedoneinIndianowsothatthegridisgoodstilltenyearsdowntheline,saidMrPadmanabhan.

    Consumerspendingtorise4timesby2020,saysajointstudybyCIIandBostonConsultingGroupTheEconomicTimes:Mumbai:Consumerspendinginthecountryislikelytogrownearlyfourtimesinadecadeto$3.6trillionby2020,drivenbyrisingincomesandaspirations,widespreadmediaproliferationandbetterphysicalreachacrossthecountry,saysastudy.AjointreportbyBostonConsultingGroupandindustrialbodyConfederationofIndianIndustry(CII)saystheoverallconsumerspendingin2010was$977billion.Thestudy,'TheTigerRoarsHowabillionpluspeopleconsumeandshop',willbereleasedonFebruary16."TheIndianconsumerhasshiftedfromforceddenialtoaffordableindulgence,"saysThomasVarghese,chairmanofCII'snationalcommitteeonretailandchiefexecutiveofficerofAdityaBirlaRetail.This"sensibleconsumption"hasthepotentialtodrivetheeconomicgrowthofthecountryforyearstocome,hesays.Organisedretailhasdevelopedanenablingenvironmenttosatisfythisconsumptiongrowthandallowingforeignretailerstoinvestinthecountrywillboostitfurther,Varghesesays.PepsiCoIndiaRegionChairman&CEOManuAnand,whoisalsothechairmanofCII'snationalcommitteeonFMCG,saysthatwhilethedramaticgrowthofthemarketiswellknown,thechangingpatternsofandattitudestowardconsumptionarenotwidelyunderstood."ItiscriticalforFMCGcompaniestounderstandthenatureofthisconsumptiondemandandwhatisdrivingit,"hesays."TheIndianconsumerpyramidisshapingintoadiamond,butmoreimportantlyincomeisonlyonevariablethatisdrivingthisconsumption,"hesays.Forinstance,withinthesameincomesegment,attitudesandbehavioursaredramaticallydifferentasconsumersaretradingupanddownatthesametime.

    MelbourneBusinessSchool(UniversityofMelbourne,Australia),NUSBusinessSchool,(NationalUniversityofSingapore)andUniversityofNewSouthWalesweresomeoftheotherinstitutesthatfeaturedamongthetop10intheregion.TheQSglobalreport,whichoriginatedintheearly1990s,providesadetailedoverviewofthemostpopularbusinessschoolsaroundtheworldbasedoninformationgivenbyglobalrecruiters.Itlistsout200businessschoolsfromwhichemployersprefertorecruitMBAs.Theratingsaremaderegionwise(AfricaandtheMiddleEast;AsiaPacific;Europe;LatinAmerica;NorthAmerica)andMBAspecializationratings.Accordingtothereport,eventhoughbusinessschoolsintheUnitedStatesandEuroperemainthemostpopulardestinationsforMBA,schoolsinotherpartsm,likeintheAsiaPacific,aregainingpopularity."BusinessschoolsintheAsiaPacificregionarelookingatthestandardoftopAmericanandEuropeaninstitutionsasindicatorsofhowtheycompareandwheretheycouldimprove.Furthermore,theeconomicgrowthinsomeAsiancountries,particularlyinChinaandIndia,hasheightenedthedemandformoreaccreditedbusinessschoolsintheregioninordertotrainthenextgenerationofsuccessfulbusinessleaders,"saysthereport."IIMBhasshowngradualimprovementsintheratings,climbingfromsixth(2009)tofifth(2010)andthisyearmissedthetopclusterbyjust2.7points,"thereportsays.However,thereisaworryaboutinternationalstudentenrolment."ManyofAsia'sbusinessschoolslackininternationalstudentenrolment,causingconcernamongemployerswhoarelookingforgraduatestoworkinamultinationalenvironment,"thereportsays.ThepercentageofinternationalstudentsinIIMA,IIMB,IIMCandISBis1,10,3and5respectively.

    TataPowercommissions25MWsolarprojectinGujaratTheHinduBusinessLine:Ahmedabad:TataPowerhascommissioneda25megawatt(MW)solarphotovoltaic(PV)powerprojectinGujarat.Spreadover100acresofland,theRs365croresolarplantisbasedoncrystallinesiliconPVtechnology.ThecompanyhadsignedapowerpurchaseagreementfortheprojectwithGujaratUrjaVikasNigamLtd.TheMithapurplantisoneofthelargestofitskindinthecountryandisnowfeedingpowerintothegrid,MrAnilSardana,ManagingDirector,TataPower,saidinastatementhere.Thecompanyssubsidiary,TataPowerRenewableEnergyLtd,hadrecentlytieduptheentiredebtrequirementthroughaconsortiumofdomesticlenders,namelyStateBankofIndiaandExportImportBankofIndiawithSBICapitalMarketsLtdactingasthesolefinancialadvisorandarranger.TheprojectfinancingcomprisesequityofRs110croreandrupeetermloanofRs255crore.TataPowerplanstosetup300MWofsolarpowercapacityby2017.Ithassofarexecuteda3MWsolarPVplantatMulshi,oneofthelargestgridconnectedsolarprojectsinMaharashtra,andhadsetupitsfirstsolarpowerplantof110kW,waybackin1996atWalwhaninLonavla.Withtheseprojects,TataPowernowhasaportfolioofmorethan28MWofsolarand375MWofwindpower,makingitthelargestrenewableutilityplayerinIndia.TataPower,Indiaslargestprivatesectorpowerutilitywithaninstalledgenerationcapacityofabout3,682MW,hasapresenceinallsegmentsofthepowersectorvizgeneration(thermal,hydro,solarandwind),transmission,distributionandtrading.

    IndiaSignsInternationalTaxAgreementIndiahasbecomethe32ndsignatorytotheConventiononMutualAdministrativeAssistanceinTaxMatters.OrganisationforEconomicCooperationandDevelopment(OECD)announcedthisinParisonJanuary27.Indiassigningoftheconvention,amultilateralagreementpromotinginternationalcooperationwhilerespectingtherightsoftaxpayers,sentastrongsignalthatcountriesareactingtogethertoensurethatindividualsandmultinationalenterprisespaytherightamountoftax,attherighttimeandintherightplace,OECDsaid.IexpectitwillbethefirstnonOECDG20countryforwhichtheupdatedConventionisinforce,saidJeffreyOwens,directoroftheOECDCentreforTaxPolicyandAdministration.TheconventionwasdevelopedjointlybytheCouncilofEuropeandOECDandopenedforsignaturebymemberstatesofbothorganisationsonJanuary25,1988.ItwasamendedinApril2009.afterG20calledforactiontomakeiteasierfordevelopingcountriestosecurethebenefitsofthenewcooperativetaxenvironment,includingamultilateralapproachfortheexchangeofinformation.Theconventionpromotesadministrativecooperationintheassessmentandcollectionoftaxes,withaviewtocombatingtaxavoidanceandevasionwhilerespectingtherightsoftaxpayers.

    Franchisemarketgrowingatover30%perannumTheHinduBusinessLine:Hyderabad:Thecountrysfranchisemarket,estimatedtobe$4billionin2011,isgrowingatahealthypaceofover30percentperannumwithtierIIandtierIIIcitiesgraduallygettinghookedtothenetworkofretailersandfranchisers.Iftheeducationsectorwasintheforefrontofferingfranchiseoptions,itnowencompassesfoodandbeveragesandotherservicessectors,accordingtorepresentativestakingpartatthetwodayFRO2012beinghostedattheHyderabadInternationalConventionCentre(HICC).MrGauravMarya,PresidentofFranchiseIndia,said:FranchisinginIndiahaswitnessedimpressivegrowthofaround3035percentyearafteryearoverthelast45yearswithanestimatedturnoverof$4billion.Itishelpingtransformgoodideasintobusinesses.TheFROservesasaplatformtoidentify,fosterandcommercialiseinnovativebusinessstartupideasandtomeetthedemandsoftodaysdynamicentrepreneurialarena.Brainworks,Buzz,Chhabra555,CoffeeBeansandTea&Leaf,Cookieman,Gelato,JuiceSalon,MotherEarth,KwalityWalls,NewZealandNaturals,areamongahostofotherstakingpartintheconcurrentexposition.Theexpositionservesasaregionalplatformforpotentialtieupswherecompaniespresenttheirfranchiseconcepts.Typically,franchiseoptionscomewithastartinginvestmentofRs5lakhgoinguptoRs5crore.Morethan5,000participantsareexpectedtotakepartduringtheeventandgetachancetointerfacewithcompaniesrepresentativesandexploreopportunitiesforcollaboration.

    Tulsiasantiradiationmedicine Fromgrandmashomeremediesforcough,coldandotherailments,tulsi(HolyBasil)isnowbeingtestedbyIndianscientistsfortreatingpeopleexposedtoharmfulradiationsandinitialtestshaveshownsomepositiveresults.ScientistsattheDefenceResearchandDevelopmentOrganisation(DRDO)havedevelopedatulsibasedherbalmedicinefortreatingpeopleexposedtoradiations.Themedicineisalreadyinthesecondphaseoftrials.Accordingtoscientists,tulsihasantioxidantpropertiesandcanrepaircellsdamagedbyexposuretoradiation.Tulsibasedmedicineisalreadyinsecondphaseofclinicaltrials.Ithastoundergosomemoretrialsbeforeitisfinalizedandgoesforcommercialproduction.Animaltrialshavealsobeenconductedandtheirresultswerequiteencouraging,DRDOsChiefController(ResearchandDevelopment)W.Selvamurthysaid.Besidestulsi,seabuckthornandHimalayanmayapple(Podophyllumhexandrum)wereotherherbschosentodevelopmedicinesnotjusttotreatthoseeffectedbynuclearradiationsbutalsoasaprecautionforthosegoingforrescueworkinradiationaffectedareas.Selvamurthysaiditwasforthefirsttimeintheworldthattulsiwasbeingusedforcounteringtheharmfuleffectsofexposuretoradiation.Themedicinesusedfortreatingradiationrelatedailmentsareverytoxicinnature.Theseherbalmedicineswouldchangethewayradiationtreatmenttakesplace,astheywouldbequitesafe,headded.Listingoutotherinnovationsbytheresearchorganization,SelvamurthysaidaspecialAloeVerabasedantifrostbitecream,Alocal,hadbeendevelopedforsoldiersdeployedathigheraltitudes.Themedicine,whichisalreadyinthemarket,preventsfrostbite

    enabledhumanbeingstofindandusenewandrenewablesourcesofenergy.Onesuchsourceiswind,whichisaclean,renewableandsustainableformofenergy.Windisfreeandwithmoderntechnologycanbecapturedefficientlyforgeneratingpower.Ithasnogreenhousegasesemissions.

    Throughouthistory,windenergyhasbeenharnessedinmanyways.Centuriesago,windpowerwasusedtosailshipsandwindmillswereusedtogrindthegrains,pumpwaterandcutwood.Initially,inIndiawindpowerwasusedforirrigationandgrindingpurposesbutlaterondevelopmentofwindpowergotaboost.Now,itisbeingusedtoprovideelectricitytogridalongwithitsusefordistributiongenerationmode.

    Today, India is the fifth largestproducerofwindenergygloballyafterChina, theU.S.A.,GermanyandSpainwithacumulativeinstalledcapacityofover16000MWtilltheendofJanuary2012.Thetotalpotentialforwindpowerin Indiawas first estimated by the Centre forWindEnergy Technology (CWET), Chennai at 45GWand has beenrecently increasedto49.13GW. In fact, in the twelfth fiveyearplantheGovernmentproposes toadd15000MWofcapacitythroughnewwindenergyprojects.

    Currently, wind technology is being primarily used in three ways: (i)Wind pumps, which use mechanicalenergyfromwindmainlyforwaterpumpingpurposes(usedfordrinkingandirrigation).(ii)Windenergygenerators(WEGSs),connectedtoturbines,whichareusedtoproduceelectricity,tobedistributedonelectricitygridsandaremeant for rural and/or urban use. (iii) Windelectric battery chargers which produce electricity and store it inbatteries

    Topromotetheuseofwindenergy inthecountrytheMinistryofNewandRenewableEnergy ispromotingtwoprogrammes:(i)WindEnergyProgrammeand(ii)SmallWindEnergy&HybridSystemsProgramme.

    WindEnergyProgrammeTheprogrammeaimsatlargescalecommercializationofcosteffectivegenerationofgridqualitywindpower.Wind energy programme covers surveys and assessment of wind resource, facilitation and implementation ofdemonstrationandprivatesectorprojectsthroughvariousfiscalandpromotionalpolicies.

    WindResourceAssessmentisdonefordecidingthepotentialsites.Windenergyissitespecific;therefore,data

    needstobecollectedbeforestartingaproject.Atotalof627windmonitoringstationscovering13StatesandUnionTerritorieshavebeenestablished.HandbooksonWindEnergyResourceSurveyinIndiahavebeenpublishedgivingdetailsofwinddata.Infact,anumericalWindAtlasforIndiahasbeenpreparedandlaunched.Itistohelpthestakeholdersingettingbettermicrositingleadingtohighergenerationfromwindpowerprojects.Micrositingisnecessaryfor the optimization ofwind farm layout and locatingnew turbines asper thenorms specified by respective stateregulatoryauthorities.

    DemonstrationWindPowerProjectsaretakenuptocreatenecessaryinfrastructuretoopenupthesitesfor

    commercial deployment by demonstrating the success so that private sector gets confidence to invest. The firstdemonstration project in the country was set up near Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu in 1986. Subsequently, moredemonstrationprojectshavebeenestablishedatdifferentlocationsinthecountry.

    TheGovernmentissupportingtheWindPowerProgrammethroughfiscalandpromotionalincentives.These

    include80%accelerateddepreciation,concessiononcustomdutiesoncriticalcomponents,taxholidayonincomeandexcisedutiesexemption. TheMinistryofNewandRenewableEnergyimplementstheschemeonGenerationBasedIncentive(GBI)forWindPowerProjects.UndertheScheme,anincentiveofRs0.50perunitofelectricityfedintothegridbywindpowerprojectsisbeingprovidedoverandabovethetariffgivenbythestateutilities,withanoverallcapofRs62lakhperMWtobeavailedinaperiodnotlessthanfouryearsandmaximumperiodof10years.GBIschemeisavailablefortheprojectswhichdonotclaimtheaccelerateddepreciationbenefit.Loansforinstallingwindmillsareavailable from Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA) and other Financial Institutions. AninvestmentofaroundRs.5.5croreismadeperMWinstallationofwindpowerprojects.

    Atotalcapacityofaround16000MWhasbeenestablisheduptoJanuary,2012,mainlyinTamilNadu,Gujarat,

    Maharashtra,AndhraPradesh,KarnatakaandRajasthan.Windelectricgeneratorsofunitsizesbetween225kWand2.5MWhavebeendeployedacrossthecountry.SmallWindEnergy&HybridSystemsProgramme

    Theaimof theprogramme is todevelop technologyandpromoteapplicationsofwaterpumpingwindmillsandaerogenerators/windsolarhybridsystemsusefulformeetingwaterpumpingandsmallpowerrequirementsinrural/semiurban/urbanwindyareasofthecountry.Italsoundertakesresearch&developmentforimprovementofdesigns and efficiency of these systems. The users mainly involve individuals, farmers, NGOs, Central/StateGovernment agencies, local bodies and Panchayats, Autonomous Institutions, Research Organizations, CooperativeSocieties,CorporateBodies,SmallBusinessEstablishments,Banks,etc.

    Underthescheme,financialsupportisprovidedtothebeneficiariesinstallingtheaerogenerators,windsolar

    hybridsystemsandwaterpumpingwindmills.Indiacanexploitthepotentialofmicrogenerationtechnologiesandmeettheenergyneedsunderthedistributedgenerationmode.Anaerogeneratorisasmallwindelectricgeneratorhaving a capacity of upto 50 kW and is suitable for unelectrified areas having adequatewind speeds. It producesoptimumpowerattheratedwindspeedof30kmperhour.ThewindsolarhybridsystemmainlyconsistsofoneortwoaerogeneratorsalongwithSPVpanelsconnectedwithbatterybanktosupplyACpower.Thepowergeneratedfrombothwindandsolarcomponents isstored inabatterybankforusewheneverrequired.Waterpumpingwindmillspumpwaterfromwells,pondsetc.andcanliftwaterwhenwindspeedapproaches810Kmperhour.Theyarecapableofpumpingwaterintherangeof1000to8000litresperhour.

    The winners of the competitions recited Hindi poetry, Ramayana and singing of BhajanAcolourfulculturalprogrammewaspresentedbytheIndianCulturalCentrestudents.Onthisoccasion,H.E. Ambassador of India, Shri KJS Sodhi andMrs. Sodhi and the Chief GuestCol.Justus Hewa kee,representative of Minister of Defencedistributed the prizes to the winners of the differentcompetitions. Ambassador also presented books to the Local Hindi organizations Suriname HindiParishadandSurinameSahityaMitraSanstha.

    Theyear longcelebrationsof the150thBirthAnniversaryofGurudevRabindranathTagorewerealsoamalgamatedwithHindiDivasandaspecialcompetitionforCreativewriting(poetryorproseinHindi)wasorganised,whichwasspeciallyintroducedforHindilocalteachers,inwhichtheyhadtowrite either prose of poetry inspired by the life or creativity of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore.     YOGAWORKONAGING&AWARENESSYogaTeacherMs. SuchintKaur Sodhi conductedaYogaworkshoponAging&Awareness at IndianCulturalCentre, ParamariboonTuesday17January2012.Therewere70participantsofdifferentagegroupsintheworkshop.Duringtheworkshop,adetailedexplanationwasgivenaboutthedifferentstagesofageenjoymentage,alarmingageandmaintenanceage.Eachpersonexperienceallthestagesandfromtimetotimepeoplegothroughthedifferentmodesoflifewhereoneneedstobealertandtoknowwhichthereasonsresponsibleforagingareandhowonecanreducethat.Yogaisoneofthebestsystemwhichbringsoverall internalcoordinationandkeepthemetabolicactivityuptothelevel,sothatthefactorswhichareresponsibleforagingcanbereduced.Alongwiththatfood,environment,cleansingandmanagementofstressshouldalsobetakencareof.

    AnIndianSareeDrapingDemonstrationworkshopwasorganisedbyICCon18thMay2012at Indian Cultural Centre, Paramaribo, to promote Indian costumes. Over 27% of theSurinamesepopulationisof Indianorigin,andtheyliketoweartraditionalIndiandressessuchasSareesduringmarriages,Indianfestivalsandothersocialgatherings.Ontherequestofsomewomen,variousstylesofSareesdrapingfromIndianStatesofU.P.,WestBengal,andGujaratetc.weredemonstratedtotheaudience.Nearly25womenattendedtheworkshop.Mrs. Manjeet Sodhi, wife of H.E. Ambassador of India also graced the occasion. Theworkshopwaswellappreciatedbytheparticipants.

This culturally and architecturally important monument wascompletedin1573.Originally,itwasabrickfortknownasBadalgarh.WhentheMoghulrulerAkbarmadeAgrahiscapital,hehadtheruinedfortrebuiltinredsandstonebroughtfromRajasthan.ItwasherethatthefamousdiamondKohinoorwasfoundamidsthiddentreasure.Itisbelievedthatsome1,444,000buildersworkedonitforeightyears.Withinits2.5kmlongenclosurewalls,ithousesmanypalaces,twomosques,gardensandaudiencehalls.Some500buildingsinspiredbyBengaliandGujaratiarchitecturewerebuiltinthefort.ThesewerelaterdemolishedbyShahJahanwhobuilthiswhitemarblepalaces.Today,itstandsimperiallyoverlookingthemajesticTajMahal.
