There are around 30,000children and young people in the UKwho have a visual impairment. Manyof them are not getting the supportthey need to reach their potential...

Please consider how YOU may be ableto support Jane in her appeal on behalf ofGUIDE DOGS

Dear Members of the Lions family...

January has suddenly vanished and time is marching on. We went to the Pantomime (Oh no you didn’t – Oh yes wedid) and had a lovely evening, great company and a fabulous cast of Conningsby and Tattershall Lions and somespecial little friends. It was a joyful evening, lots of laughs, great cup of tea and biscuit and, best of all, these wonderfulpeople are donating the profits to Guide Dogs for the Blind. It is truly amazing and an inspiration as to what a LionsClub can achieve when they all work together.

Alan and I are busy preparing (me washing and ironing) for the Council of Governors meeting in Birmingham, quicklyfollowed by a Cabinet meeting at Long Eaton and then our first Charter of 2015 at Shepshed Lions Club.

I look forward to meeting some more new friends over the next few months and thank you yet again for all theamazing support you are giving in my appeal for Guide Dogs.

Best wishes

It’s not often a club has the privilege ofwelcoming three new members on thesame day but that was just what Ashbyde la Zouch and Coalville Lions haverecently been able to do.Lynda and George Allen were proud todon their Lions badges as they joinedforces with the Club. The couple are soonto celebrate their 10th WeddingAnniversary and are now looking forwardto doing that as part of a Club Socialmeeting in March. The couple werebriefly involved in the Lions organisationa few years ago before moving awayfrom the area and Lynda was (until itsclosure) a founder member and pastPresident of Ashby & District LionessClub. They are now both retired andalready very keen and enthusiastic Lions.

Immediate Past President Liz Mitchell (second right) welcomes the new trio of LionsGeorge Allen, Lynda Allen and Clive Burrows (extreme right)

A TRIO of new Lions

The third member of this illustrious trio is Clive Burrows. Clive is semi retired, married with three children and has recentlymoved into the Ashby area from Leicester. He’s a former Group Scout Leader and has been actively involved in theScouting movement for a number of years. Its no doubt that all three new members will be an asset to the Ashby de laZouch and Coalville Lions Club .

In Flanders fields the poppies blowBetween the crosses, row on row,That mark our place: and in the skyThe larks still bravely singing flyScarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead: Short days ago,We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,Loved and were loved: and now we lieIn Flanders fields!

Take up our quarrel with the foeTo you, from failing hands, we throwThe torch: be yours to hold it highIf ye break faith with us who die,We shall not sleep, though poppies growIn Flanders fields

Composed at the battlefront, during thesecond battle of Ypres, BelgiumMay 3 1915

IN FLANDERS FIELDSThe Worlds Most FamousWar Memorial PoemBy Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae

Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae On May 2, 1915, John McCrae’s close friend and

former student Alexis Helmer was killed by aGerman shell. As he was buried McCrae recitedfrom memory a few passages from the Church ofEngland’s ‘Order of the Burial of the Dead’. Thenext day McCrae composed In Flanders Fieldswhilst still at the battlefront and in sight of hisfriend’s grave.Sergeant-Major Cyril Allinson observed McCraewriting and later recalled the scene. ‘His face wasvery tired but calm as he wrote. He looked aroundfrom time to time’. When he was finished, withouta word, McCrae handed the poem to Allinson whowas deeply moved. He said, ‘The poem was anexact description of the scene in front of us both.He used the word ‘blow’ as the poppies actuallywere being blown that morning by a gentle eastwind. It never occurred to me at that time that itwould ever be published. It seemed to me just anexact description of the scene’.

Sleaford Lions - keeping busy and with PLENTY to smile about

It’s good to see a nice youthful smile - and of course we refer notto Lion Bob Coxhead but to the smile of Sleaford’s Peace PosterWinner Danielle Plenty as she receives her prize from the SleafordPresident (picture left). But it’s good to know that Sleaford Lionsdo indeed have plenty to smile about...Following a hugely successful Christmas period which yielded amassive £3,000 boost to their charity account the Sleaford Lionswere recently delighted to be able to help pensioner Jean Merrills.Jean, a widow who lives alone explained, I enjoy cooking butrecently had a problem with my cooker. It was condemned by anelectrician and as I have no savings to buy a new one I approachedAge UK who put me in touch with the Sleaford and District Lions. After several visits, one of their members took me along to SCDomestic Appliances in Ruskington and the Lions paid for abrand-new Beko cooker which is now installed and I‘m back tocooking and baking again. I am so grateful to the Lions. They dosuch good work helping those who find themselves struggling tocope or who are in need without asking for any reward’.With another Good Job Done the club is now busily collectingbooks for their Book Stall at the local Farmers Market in April .

We know that most Clubs in our District havestories similar to this one from Sleaford...

share your successes, new ideas andnews about members with us all...

Lion Patricia Phillips is collating a list of Lions who have passed to higher service. This is to ensure thatsuitable recognition is made to all during the forthcoming In Memorium tribute which is a poignant part ofthe District Convention proceedings. It is desirable that deserved recognition is given to each one of thoseLions who have worked hard within our Lions family but are no longer with us.Please ensure that Lion Patricia is made aware (as soon as possible) of any members who have passed awayso that they are included on the Roll of Honour at Convention.Additionally... It is fitting that recognition of service is given in the pages of Update E. Clubs are, therefore, encouraged to forward details of our members who have passed away (along with a photograph ifpossible). This not only enables a public tribute to be made but it also helps to ensure that fellow Lions areaware. The contact information you will need is:Lion Patricia Phillips (for Roll of Honour information)65 High Street, Tattershall, Lincoln, LN4 4NN Tel: 01526 342036 Email: [email protected] Gordon Davison (for Update E contributions)1 Poplar Grove, Scotter, Gainsborough, DN21 3TZ Tel 01724 762036 / 07711 153080 Email: [email protected]
