11The primary purpose of the teacher´s pack is to help both teachers and students alike to get as much as possible out of their participation in the Interactive performance of “MARCO POLO”.

The pack has been designed as a tool to help students understand the play, learn new vocabulary and improve their listening and speaking skills. Once they have done the activities, students will understand better both how the story develops and the lines the actors deliver so they will get more enjoyment out of performance.

This CD contains some introductory material where you’ll fi nd the corresponding texts to the plot synopsis, meet the characters, some dialogues from the play and the original songs performed along the play.

Also, you’ll fi nd some suggested activities we recommend you to do before the play, Pre-play activities, and some Post-play activities which have been designed to check if students understood the play correctly. The activities also enable the students vocabulary, expressions and grammatical structures to improve. Pre-play and post-play activities include instructions for the teacher and the corresponding student worksheets, as long as the activity requires them. Some of the activities have an extension part (Extension activity) which makes it possible to study the contents in depth, depending on the groups ability.

Both the introductory material and the suggested activities may require the corresponding audio material to make better use of them. In that case, we provide you with the corresponding track number from the Audio CD.

In order to help the teacher fi nd and select the audio activities, we have listed below the track numbers with its corresponding contents from the play “MARCO POLO”.

All this with an approach based on communication, which aims to encourage students, involving them in dialogues, conversations, songs ... and other forms of communication that are essencial to the teaching and learning of a foreign language.

The teaching materials of “MARCO POLO ” will allow you to study in depth the following overall objetives:

LISTENING:

Various activities such as listening and repeating words as well as having to fi ll in the gaps to certain dialogues and songs, helping to sharpen the students ear and encourage them to repeat all they here in English.

It helps them to hone in on their reading skills and then gives them the opportunity through writing to practice what they already know as well as developing a greater knowledge of the language.

33A very long time ago, in the year 1254, to be precise, in the enchanting city of Venice, Italy, an old woman was heard shouting for joy as the sounds of a crying infant wailed across the entire Piazza d´San Marco.

“Allora”! “O mio dio, è un maschio”!

A little baby boy had been born, his parents did not know that this tiny new born child would in time, become one of the world´s greatest known Italian explorers. They named him Marco. Marco Polo.

Our story begins some years later where we fi nd Marco has grown into a handsome young man. Like his father, Niccolo, he is now a sailor. Travelling to foreign lands and sailing into the unknown fascinates him. One day he decides to go on the journey of a lifetime. He sets sail on his boat and crosses the seas, withstanding sun, rain, storms, winds and sea monsters.

He fi nally arrives in Imperial China, where his mission is to fi nd the famous Kublai Khan and deliver a letter to him, sent from the young sailor´s father. However, he faces a great problem. The evil minister Ahmed is waiting to hypnotize the startled sailor. He tricks him and almost manages to steal the important letter Marco is carrying. However, Marco is insistent and fi nally Ahmed angrily leaves, looking for his master, the great Kublai Khan.In this moment, Marco meets the beautiful princess Kaidu, although he isn´t aware just yet, that she is a princess. She teaches him many things about China and they get on very well. Marco explains to Kaidu why he is in China, and Kaidu gives him a typical Chinese costume to wear for when he meets the great leader.

Marco Polo fi nally meets Kublai Khan and delivers the letter from his father. The letter has some important information that will change Marco´s life forever. Once again the evil vizier Ahmed tries to ruin everything and Marco Polo is left to try and defeat him.

What will happen? Will Ahmed be victorious and ruin a happy ending? Or will Marco Polo scare Ahmed off for good and live happily ever after?

3737THE DRAGONcomplementary ACTIVITY

Read this fragment of text, from the fi nal part of the play”Marco Polo”.

Dragons, in the East are benevolent creatures that help humanity. Marco Polo, the famous Italian traveller, was able to study the dragons along the course of his trip to China. For the Chinese, the dragon is an animal, created by children, to preserve peace and is born from the union of a fi sh, a bird, a horse, a snake and a buffalo.

What we propose that you do, amongst all classmates, is create a beautiful picture of a dragon, in the style of a mural, and decorate it as you so wish. You can use all kinds of items to decorate it: from simply painting some parts, to sticking coffee beans, walnut shells, or any other items you consider of interest. The dragon mural can be hung in the classroom until you go and see the performance, at which point you can take the mural and have the actors themselves sign it.

KAIDU: And now, Marco Polo, we could celebrate it by venerating our most beloved animal: the dra-gon.

MARCO POLO: The dragon?

Kaidu: The dragon is the animal that protects every man at the same time: it’s agile like a fi sh, free like a bird, fast like a horse, astute like a snake and strong like a buffalo.

MARCO POLO: Really?

KAIDU: The dragon has got a snake´s body, scales, a horse´s head, buffalo horns and bird legs.

MARCO POLO: It’s incredible!

KAIDU: And it can fl y through the sky, swim across the sea and sink into the ground.

MARCO POLO: Then let’s get the dragon party started.
