Multi-page documents + Master pages

Objectives:

More text frames Creating and using Master Pages Creating multi-page documents Automatically adding page numbers Using Layers Adding Effects to text and other objects

Goal: Create this:

Multi-Pages Page 1

Page 2: InDesign Introduction Note…  · Web viewNow, select the 2-3 spread (double-click), and choose View>Fit Spread in Window. If text too small to display, shows Greeking instead…

Using Master Pages

We will have 1 or 2 A Master page is really just a template for the layout of the document pages.

Will create a 5 page document with: 3 spreads (a spread is how many pages you can see

at a time, one or two), By default, there are two master pages…one applied

to odd numbered pages (aka. right facing), a second for even numbered (aka.left facing) pages.

Start InDesign Reset Essentials workspace

Check Preferences Edit>Preferences>Units and Increments and set

Origin to Page, and inches for Ruler units

Origin: Page. This way, each page will go from 0” to 8.5, if you choose spread, the ruler will go from 0”-17”

Multi-Pages Page 2

Page 5: InDesign Introduction Note…  · Web viewNow, select the 2-3 spread (double-click), and choose View>Fit Spread in Window. If text too small to display, shows Greeking instead…

Then:

Shows three Spreads , and two Master pages Has cover page (page 1...think magazine cover) and two, 2-page spreads, the pages face each other

Multi-Pages Page 5

Page 6: InDesign Introduction Note…  · Web viewNow, select the 2-3 spread (double-click), and choose View>Fit Spread in Window. If text too small to display, shows Greeking instead…

We have right…odd… (pages 1,3,5) and left facing pages (2 and 4)

Outside the document is a scratch area. Put items there might need later, like a logo

Open these panels: Transform

(Window>Object and Layout>Transform) Window>Type and Table>Character Window>Type and Table> Paragraph Window>Layers

Dock Character and Paragraph panels

Be sure Pages panel open also

We can view: a single page (click the desired page in the Pages

Panel to turn it blue)

Multi-Pages Page 6

Page 7: InDesign Introduction Note…  · Web viewNow, select the 2-3 spread (double-click), and choose View>Fit Spread in Window. If text too small to display, shows Greeking instead…

Or we can view a spread consisting of two pages (click the numbers )

To view single page after selecting it: View>Fit Page in Window

To view a spread after selecting it in the Pages panel: View>Fit Spread in Window

In the Pages panel, double click the 2-3 spread...both pages should turn blue/gray.

And the first 2-page spread shows up (Or View>Fit Spread in Window):

Multi-Pages Page 7

Page 8: InDesign Introduction Note…  · Web viewNow, select the 2-3 spread (double-click), and choose View>Fit Spread in Window. If text too small to display, shows Greeking instead…

Look at the rulers…the horizontal ruler goes from 0-8.5” on each page.

This is because we chose Page as origin option. What if we had selected Spread: the Rulers would go 0”-17”

Look at the Master page area:

Multi-Pages Page 8

Page 9: InDesign Introduction Note…  · Web viewNow, select the 2-3 spread (double-click), and choose View>Fit Spread in Window. If text too small to display, shows Greeking instead…

If we put something in the A Master, right page, that content will show in every right facing (odd) pages 1,3, and 5...

To add something to a regular page (i.e. NOT a Master), select the page and add content, as we did in the single-page module.

Goal: To add a small Text Frame at the top of Page 1, against the right margin…2”down ,as you can see below:

Multi-Pages Page 9

Page 10: InDesign Introduction Note…  · Web viewNow, select the 2-3 spread (double-click), and choose View>Fit Spread in Window. If text too small to display, shows Greeking instead…

The Steps Select Page 1:

Turns blue View>Fit Page in Window Select the text frame tool To help position the text frame in the x direction, select

any reference point on the right side of the Transform panel: upper right corner best)

Q: Is the concept of the reference points clear?

Draw the text frame (box).

Multi-Pages Page 10

Page 11: InDesign Introduction Note…  · Web viewNow, select the 2-3 spread (double-click), and choose View>Fit Spread in Window. If text too small to display, shows Greeking instead…

Transform Settings:

Need (x,y) and H,W values

X value calculation: 8.5 inches for width of page, and - .5 for margin, so right edge of text box should be 8 inches…x=8.0

Choose any reference point along the top row. (Mine was already selected)

Want the top of the box to be down 2”, so Y=2” Size: W:4.5”, H:1”

Summary: H: 1 W=4.5 X=8”, Y=2

Your Transform palette should have these values

Multi-Pages Page 11

Page 12: InDesign Introduction Note…  · Web viewNow, select the 2-3 spread (double-click), and choose View>Fit Spread in Window. If text too small to display, shows Greeking instead…

Note: You will later add a title at the top of each page via a master page. That’s why we started the text frame 2” down

General Rule: On right-facing pages, push stuff to the right (chapter titles, page numbers,…). Opposite for left-facing pages

Think of a book…the page numbers on the left side align left, and vice versa for pages on the right..

Inside the text frame, on page 1, type: This is Page 1

Change font (to Trajan Pro), size 24 points… o It capitalized the letterso Can use Control bar or the Character panel

Multi-Pages Page 12

Page 13: InDesign Introduction Note…  · Web viewNow, select the 2-3 spread (double-click), and choose View>Fit Spread in Window. If text too small to display, shows Greeking instead…

Or use Control bar:

We’re going to add content to the remaining odd numbered pages (3,5)

Multi-Pages Page 13

Page 14: InDesign Introduction Note…  · Web viewNow, select the 2-3 spread (double-click), and choose View>Fit Spread in Window. If text too small to display, shows Greeking instead…

Click the Selection tool (black arrow) to exit text mode

Or, choose Edit>Deselect All Goal: Create content for Page #3; and Page # 5 using copy, Paste in Place

Select the Text frame you just created (on Page 1) Edit >Copy

Select Page 3 Edit>Paste in Place Change the text to say This is Page 3

Goal: Page # 5 Content Repeat the paste in place process

Even Pages Next..can’t use Paste in Place: We want this text to be left-justified

Page # 2 first

Just do a regular Copy/PasteMulti-Pages Page 14

Page 15: InDesign Introduction Note…  · Web viewNow, select the 2-3 spread (double-click), and choose View>Fit Spread in Window. If text too small to display, shows Greeking instead…

Select the box on Page 1, Ctrl-C, then switch to Page 2, (Double-click on Page 2 symbol) and Paste (Ctrl-V)

The text box appears in the middle of the page. We need to reposition it….

Transform:

Select any reference point along the left side of the Reference points and specify x=.5, y=2 :

Left-justify the text inside the box

Change the text to say Page 2: Use the paragraph panel to left-justify the text inside

the box for page 2

Create a new text frame at the very top of the Master 1.25 inches tall, 7.5”wide (extend from margin to margin )

Upper left reference values: X=.5 Y=.5 H:.1.25 W:7.5

Why are x,y = .5?, not zero?
