 Public Awareness

Public Awareness

The aims of IncrediblEurope can only be achieved with a broad network of stakeholders wor-

king together on raising public awareness on innovation, creativity and sustainable develop-

ment throughout the continent.

Projects, businesses and initiatives working with innovative and creative visions require spe-

cific forms of support and nurturing. At the same time, increasing public dialogue will also

help create a European mindset apt to deal with the challenges of crisis and future develop-

ments by strongly relying on innovation and creativity.

Mission

The IncrediblEurope Public Awareness campaign fosters increased understanding for Euro-

pe’s incredible potential in innovation and creativity in every sector of human activity and

thought. Our mission is to expand horizons, nurture Europe’s innovative and creative visions

and strengthen Europe's position and brand value in local and global contexts.

IncrediblEurope advocates ample support, interaction and cooperation between all stakehol-

ders as a sustainable investment in Europe’s future. The campaign involves all European

countries and works across languages, sectors and activities, promoting and presenting

good practice visions, tips and ideas from all over the continent. We believe that all of them

can spark imagination and make a difference.

Page 5: IncrediblEurope 2009

 Public Awareness

Pink? - re:think!

"The website is great", we heard, "but I don't like the pink". It made us think - or rather, it ma-

de us re:think. As a colour, pink raises emotions and contradictions: Boys like blue and girls

like pink? Boys should not wear pink, but managers should? Wearing pink is about being

"tough enough"?

So, what’s the issue with pink? Just like with other colours, words and symbols, it's not about

the pink hue, but about our perception of it. It's about the meaning behind it. And it's about

our ability to tackle our own prejudice and mindset and start thinking beyond-the-box.

Many of the initiatives and projects presented at IncrediblEurope are unconventional and

different. But they're distinctly innovative and creative by the fact that their authors, to quote

the great European genius Leonardo da Vinci, "did not let themselves be constrained by any

known universe". Rather than asking "why", the IncrediblEurope community asks - "why

not"? In and beyond crisis, no product of human genius and effort is too good to be believed -

in our vision of Europe, incredible is doable. Today.

Let us face the challenges and crises of today and tomorrow by “opening the box” and

re:thinking about how we perceive Europe. Let us use synergies to work beyond any

constraints on ourselves and others. Let us make a difference in the world by making our

European home a better place.

Report of the Incredible Summit 2009

On June 29, the Viennese boutique consultancy Brainswork convened the first Incredible

Summit “IncrediblEurope – the Power of Innovation and Creativity for the Future of Eu-rope” in Vienna.

The aim of the interdisciplinary summit was to use the diversity of approaches, ideas and

fields of work of the speakers and participants to encourage shared connected thinking –

brainsworking, and create visions for Europe’s sustainable development. Participants from

23 countries attended the first IncrediblEurope summit, which provided a variety of inspira-

tional insights and thought-provoking statements. One special success for the Summit was

the unanimous call for the Summit to become a permanent highlight on the calendar, and for

the initiative to continue its work on fostering visions and synergies for Europe’s creative and

innovative future through the IncrediblEurope Association.

Summit participants were first greeted by IncrediblEurope Initiator and Brainswork Founder

and CEO, Selma Prodanovic. The Summit, she said, was a rather spontaneous idea: “In

January, at the peak of the crisis, we developed the concept, and just five months later, we’re

here.” However, it is also a very strategic idea, particularly in times as challenging as these:

“The summit is the proof that even in the worst crisis a creative and innovative approach can

make a difference. And what the state of the world economy today demands from us, is

counter-cyclic action and a clear positioning for Europe.”

Greeting the participants, Gian Paolo Spadola from the Vienna Chamber of Commerce and

Industry reminded that “one of the chamber’s main aims was to create and inspire public

awareness on what the creative industries mean to the economic system and what they are

able to contribute.” A number of successful projects already demonstrate the scope and ex-

tent of this contribution – and the way it is shaping Vienna and its identity in economic and

cultural terms.

80-year old professor Luigi Colani, who embodies the idea of IncrediblEurope by combining

diverse approaches and skills in hi-tech design, science, philosophy and industry, provided

the day’s first keynote.

Page 7: IncrediblEurope 2009

 Report

Celebrated worldwide as the pioneer of organic design, Colani produced some 20,000 revo-

lutionary designs, 70% of which have been produced in series. His presentation provided

exclusive insights into some of his extraordinary work in planes, automobiles, buildings and

other fields.

Colani came especially from China, where he now works, to give critical remarks about Eu-

rope but, at the same time, “to encourage young people”, as he repeated on stage. For Co-

lani, Vienna is special as Europe’s true hub: “Everything passed through Vienna, so much

genius that came from the East”, underlining Central and South East Europe as a “very cere-

bral place”. Speaking of rocket pioneer Hermann Oberth or aerodynamics mastermind Henri

Coandă, whose enormous contribution is little known in general circles, he reminded the au-

dience: “this is your heritage – you must be proud of it!”

European “doubtmakers” only think of short-term successes – and this is deadly. “We are too

dangerous, because we kick the industry’s ass”, said Colani in his provoking manner. When

it comes to Europe, the continent isn’t “hungry any more”, which is why we urgently need

ideas with “courage and audacity” – and one of them is IncrediblEurope: “Which is why you

all have to support this courageous young lady”, referring to Selma Prodanovic, “and this

initiative. And which is what I will do. You have a powerful friend in me.”

Erwin Werdenigg from Edelwiser, the Austrian company which not only allows customers to

design their own skis, but presents an innovative business model, stated: “We know that

people want to innovate. There are now global infrastructures in place which allow this, and

we are using them.” Werdenigg invited the summit participants to employ collaborative de-

sign and design three unique “Made at IncrediblEurope” pairs of skis, to be presented at the

next IncrediblEurope summit.

Introducing the day’s first panel discussion on Europe as an umbrella brand, Thomas Kratky (Agency in Progress) said that “we are now in thrilling times. And thrilling times need thrilling

people and thrilling ideas.” Jillian de Beer (de Beer Communications) from New Zealand

highlighted the importance of understanding the full scope of a brand – the people, the land-

scapes, the thinking, experiential environments and intuitive spaces.

Page 8: IncrediblEurope 2009

 Report

And young people: “In many ways, Europe is a ‘now’ destination. But you have to work hard

to attract generation Y, to make Europe recognizable as attractive in the eyes of the world’s

youth.” “Openness is the key”, answered Thomas Carlhed from the Swedish Institute, “and if

Europe is going to be relevant for the world’s future, we need to keep our borders open.

However don’t forget that right now, 16 of the 20 most powerful nation brands are in Europe.

It is one of the oldest place brands in the world.”

Ab Kuijer (of the European youth marketing agency JuniorSenior) underlined the need for

more trust in Europe and belief for the idea of Europe – and more European unity. “Why is

there no option on social networks such as Facebook that allows you to choose ‘Europe’ as

your place of origin? We should be the United States of Europe: you live in your region, with

its own distinct identity, but you share your strength and experiences within Europe.” Georg Wagner of Spirit Design concurred: “Right now Europe is just an idea. But we’re at the be-

ginning of a great concrete vision. And we need our own European version of the ‘American

Dream’.”

Danica Purg, Founder and President of the IEDC Bled School of Management in Slovenia,

said she believed that “Europe really lacks leadership.” Europe’s key asset may be its diver-

sity and its traditions, but in order to achieve success, efficient leadership is required to man-

age all that diversity – and there is no better way than art. Slovene-German violin virtuoso,

diplomat and consultant Miha Pogačnik used a Siciliana by Johann Sebastian Bach to de-

liver his inspirational and artistic message to Europe’s innovators: “Everything is organic.

Everything grows and works in very logical, natural ways. And this is just one of the things

which we can see and understand from music.” Contrasts between serenity and rush, be-

tween growth and stagnation, ending at the beginning and beginning at the end are all inhe-

rently part of any human activity and the importance of that understanding often underesti-

mated.

Mariana Ferrari from PROCESOi (Spain) invited the participants of the IncrediblEurope

Summit to join an exercise for generating ideas for Europe’s future over the next 40 years.

Page 9: IncrediblEurope 2009

 Report

Every innovation process, said Ferrari, “has three stages: a spark, an idea and an implemen-

tation. Basically, the spark is what we don't have in Europe.

We're rich; we live well, in a beautiful place which doesn't lack anything. Maybe that's why

we're not so innovative.” In an interactive experience which saw the participants generating

ideas individually and collectively, the participants were asked to give input on what Europe

needs to do in order to lead the world by 2049. “We have only six minutes to construct forty

years”, said Ferrari, managing an exercise that has managed to provide 905 ideas centered

around a variety of issues. All these ideas will be used to direct the work of IncrediblEurope

in the coming time.

The next discussion panel round was chaired by the Tulga Beyerle of the Vienna Design

Week and centered around Europe’s creative places and innovative spaces.

Reflecting on the variety of participants included, Beyerle said she felt that “multi-disciplinary

approaches such as the one today are great for getting ‘off the beaten path’”. Outi Liedes,

who works with the strategic development of support for the creative industries in Finland,

stated that Finland is currently working “to establish a university which will address business,

design and technology at the same time, named after Aalvar Aalto, the famous Finnish archi-

tect whose work went into business, design and technology at the same time.” Bettina von Stamm of the London-based Innovation Leadership Forum addressed the crucial concept of

change: “Most of us don’t exactly like change - we tend to stick to things we like.” Change

generally means embracing uncertainty, without being sure what one ultimately gets. But it is

only this uncertainty that can move things forward. And this requires strong individuals with

strong arguments: “Driving by consensus doesn't really make big change innovation hap-

pen.” Christian Hense of the Grameen Creative Lab related that it’s not always a big idea

that can cause revolutionary change: “Remember - Muhammad Yunus started with 42$ to 27

women in 1978. But a small idea with a strong partnership and a sense of responsibility can

achieve everything.”

Page 10: IncrediblEurope 2009

 Report

Roman Tolic, pioneer of the concept of Film 2.0 with his Hercules Film Network, underlined

the need for change in his context: “The European film industry needs, must and will change.

And the direction of this development is a completely new approach to involvement and inte-

raction with and beyond the sector.” He also underlined Europe’s need for completely new

markets such as content industries, located between the creative and IT sectors.

Irene Fialka from INiTS, the start-up advisory service for graduates in Vienna, talked about

knowing great ideas from good ideas: “Evaluating ideas is a very critical question. Before we

actually support an idea, we go through a whole and very broad process of asking questions

and finding out the team, the stage, the scope and reach of an idea. And we always strive to

raise our own concerns before it’s too late.”

To wrap up the day’s work, two exciting presentations were delivered by architects Áron Lo-sonczi from LiTraCon in Hungary and Barbara Imhof from LIQUIFER in Austria. Losonczi,

who serves as an Ambassador for the European Year of Creativity and Innovation, presented

his revolutionary light transmitting concrete: “The inspiration for light-transmitting concrete

actually came from a work of art: it's a captivating, almost impossible contrast”. He also hig-

hlighted the challenge for his small team in fighting copiers: “The only answer is to constantly

work to innovate and improve.”

Barbara Imhof, whose company has offices in Austria and India, and has worked with NASA

and ESA, spoke of the immense potential of learning from Space: “A space station is basical-

ly like a farmhouse, an autonomous incubator for new ideas and experiences from a com-

pletely different environment.” Taking ideas into Outer Space and collecting them from

beyond our planet is probably humanity’s key challenge for the coming years.

The event culminated with the presentation of the “Brainswork Make a Difference” Awards.

These awards celebrate the work of those individuals who use their unique talents, creativity

or ideas to make a positive difference for others in this world.

Page 11: IncrediblEurope 2009

 Report

The laureates for 2009 were Ilse Dippmann, who initiated the Austrian Women’s Run which

has since become the largest women’s running event in Central Europe; Suhas Gopinath

from India, who became the world’s youngest CEO at age 14 and now supports other young

people as an internationally successful IT entrepreneur; the 24-year old Bosnian Muhamed Mesic, who uses his skills in 56 foreign languages to promote human rights and reconcilia-

tion throughout the world; as well as professor Luigi Colani, the planetary improver and visio-

nary genius. They all have overcome a variety of obstacles without losing faith in their vision.

Their special, individual way has – alongside their tenacity and endurance – motivated other

human beings.

The awards were initiated by the passionate networker and Brainswork-CEO Selma Proda-

novic and the US star designer Mirko Ilic. “I am convinced that everyone can make a posi-

tive difference”, says Prodanovic, “but also, that there are certain individuals that can use

their extraordinary ability not just for deeper change in their communities and in society, but

also motivate and encourage people to make a difference and improve something”. Mirko Ilic

added an appeal for supporting others, just as designer Milton Glaser (“I Love New York”)

had supported him.

Apart from the day’s exciting presentations and panel discussions, the participants also had

the opportunity to meet werk, original interior designs from Werner and Katja Nussbaumer; innovative wood art from Toshen Ebersteiner; Tagtool, an open source instrument for live

visual performance; as well as the projects and programs of Creative Space and Vienna Design Week.

The summit was moderated by international trainer and lecturer Martina Gleissenebner and

included a wide range of participants, such as Erhard Busek, former Vice Chancellor of Aus-

tria and Chairman of the Institute for the Danube Region and Central Europe; Christoph Thun-Hohenstein, Managing Director of the “departure” program for creative industries in

Vienna; EDUCULT Chairman Michael Wimmer; Romy Faisst of Business Circle; repre-

sentatives of the corps diplomatique and other decision makers and visionaries from a varie-

ty of sectors.

Page 12: IncrediblEurope 2009

 Report

The Summit participants all concur in their opinion that the summit was a full success: “I

loved it! It suddenly became clear to me how much everything and everyone can, should and

must make a contribution inside and outside their own box, to make things moving”, says

Aleksandar Klobucaric; “it was a wonderful, energetic and positive event – and I hope that

many will follow in its footsteps”, writes Alexandra Ritter. From Spain to Sweden, partici-

pants wrote how outstandingly inspiring were both the day’s speakers and the atmosphere of

synergy and vision sharing: “A perfectly organized and outstandingly inspiring day. Leaving

the province without leaving Vienna! Great!”, writes Heidi Hueber.

IncrediblEurope was initiated by Brainswork and supported by the Vienna Chamber of Com-

merce and Industry, the Federal Ministry of Economics, Family and Youth Policy and by

creativwirtschaft austria - the Austrian creative industries platform.

 Feedback

Feedback from participants from 23 countries

"IncrediblEurope showed how the fusion of business, art and innovation methods may lead to

a revolutionary European vision. I realized at this conference the important role of art in the

creation of disruptive innovation and the underestimated power of lateral thinkers in big or-

ganizations.

InrediblEurope was one of the most lively and inspiring conferences I have ever participated.

It was one of those conferences which provided not only brilliant networking opportunities,

but also an excellent conference program." (Katharina Leitner, Switzerland)

"The Incredibleurope summit was from the very beginning highly informative and even more

motivating. Keynote speaker Professor Luigi Colani was the main attraction of the event -

simply with his unique personality and certainly also with his long-lasting expertise in his pro-

fession. I was totally impressed by the number of international guests representing their

country especially in the discussion about the need for a single brand for europe. Sometimes

the debate could have been slightly more goal-oriented, bearing in mind that we talked about

innovation and not about the political system of the European Union. It was a perfect oppor-

tunity to get in contact with innovative Leaders from all over the world - even in a personal

talk during the breaks. It seemed clear that everybody strongly wants to contribute with

his/her visible potential to an advanced Europe. I was especially fascinated by the enthu-

siasm of the 81-year-old (!) Professor Colani. Furthermore the "short lecture" of Miha Pogac-

nik on the influence of art and culture on leadership was very impressive and convinced me

to engage more with this topic. Great location for an outstanding event with unique guests

organized by a person who deserves special recognition for her ongoing effort to achieve a

change in mindset towards a more innovative Europe in 2049." (Harald Kollmann, Austria)

"IncrediblEurope an event to remember: It was great to meet so many open minded people

and to remember the uniqueness of European culture and knowhow, which we have to main-

tain in future. The presentations of Luigi Colani and Miha Pogacnik will be alltime favourites

of mine. " (Anita Posch, Austria)

 Feedback

"A great inspiring event: I was impressed by all the wonderful creative and innovative people

at this event. Not only the speeches were inspiring but also the participants. In my opinion

doctors should prescribe such an event to every citizen once a year. I am sure, there

wouldn’t be a questions how to get to a ‘Brand Europe’, and there wouldn’t be a word like

‘crises’, because everyone would know, that it is only a stage in a process and can also be

‘designed wonderfully’. The event definitely changes my life. I am kind of ‘jumping over my

own fences’. Great people & ideas, perfectly organized. Thank you for the chance to partici-

pate." (Monika Tockner, Austria)

"Spending an inspiring day with incredible people For one day Vienna served as a melting

pot for people from all over Europe. Hungry for innovation and creativity. Under those, some

who have already proven their genius, like Mihan Pogacnik, Luigi Colani and Mirko Ilic, to

name a few. I can´t state what impressed me the most. But this day undoubtedly had an im-

pact on my whole life. An impact which drives me as an entrepreneur and personally towards

more creativity and opens my mind for innovative European ideas." (Johanna Kriks, Austria)

"Ich möchte mich hiermit für die wundervolle, energiereiche und positive Veranstaltung be-

danken und hoffe, dass in dieser Hinsicht noch viele weitere folgen werden. Alles Liebe und

ein großer Dank an das gesamte Team." (Alexandra Ritter, Austria)

"Thank you for giving me the chance to participate today. I don't know hom much I was able

to contribute but it was really valuable for me for several reason. Not least for the amazing

people you had found for the conference. I was inspired today and I'm impressed the way

you had planned and managed it + I could feel a warm heart behind the whole thing. I'm so

glad I said yes to come. With the hope to stay in touch." (Thomas Carlhed, Sweden)

Brainswork Make a difference Awards

The Brainswork “Make a Difference” Awards were presented at an award ceremony which

was the culmination of the IncrediblEurope Summit on June 29th in Vienna, celebrating the

work of those individuals who use their unique talents, creativity or ideas to make a positive

difference for others in this world. The awards were initiated by the passionate networker and

Brainswork CEO Selma Prodanovic, and designed by American star designer Mirko Ilic, who

has previously been Art Director at TIME Magazine and the New York Times.

“I am convinced that everyone can make a positive difference”, says Prodanovic, “but also,

that there are certain individuals that can use their extraordinary ability not just for deeper

change in their communities and in society, but also motivate and encourage people to make

a difference and improve something”. The awards, presented at Europe’s leading meeting for

creative and innovative entrepreneurs and policymakers, celebrate the global efforts of

unique and innovative individuals and their work.

The 2009 laureates were Suhas Gopinath from India, who became the world’s youngest

CEO at age 14, is an internationally successful IT entrepreneur and motivates young people

as a global leader; Ilse Dippmann, from Austria, who initiated the Austrian Women’s Run

which has since become the largest women’s running event in Central Europe; the 24-year

old Bosnian human rights activist Muhamed Mesic, who uses his skills in 56 foreign lan-

guages to promote reconciliation and peace throughout the world; as well as the 80-year old

legendary design professor and organic design pioneer Luigi Colani from Germany, who

now lives and works in China.

What is common to all the laureates is that they have all overcome a variety of obstacles

without losing faith in their vision. Their special, individual way has – alongside their tenacity

and endurance – motivated other human beings. The difference they made in the world pro-

motes human values, understanding, sustainable progress and peace.

piece of furniture they design is made together with the clients,

 Innovation & Creativity

Innovation & Creativity

Where economy, science and culture meet, where creative ambition and innovative spirit

intersect with entrepreneurship, are innovative and creative minds. Today’s world would not

function without them and it would be hard to even imagine tomorrow’s world anywhere, but

particularly so in Europe, where they are seen as the key component for the future of a com-

petitive European economy.

Social, economic and individual development and progress are conditioned by a variety of

factors, but none of them are as important as innovation and creativity. Europe has a long-

standing, century long tradition of creating new things and innovating in a variety of fields and

disciplines, of creating knowledge there where is none and driving global progress. Now mo-

re than ever, as the World enters a time of thorough renewal and rethinking, innovation and

creativity are key components not just of Europe’s future, but of its present.

2009 is the European Year of Creativity and Innovation – and thus the perfect time for the

start of the IncrediblEurope campaign: making a positive difference to Europe with Europe’s

innovative, creative talent.

EUROPE 2049 - Idea Challenge (June 29, 2009)

During the IncrediblEurope Europe 2049 Idea Challenge at the Incredible Summit, a total of

905 ideas for Europe's innovative and creative leadership in the world of 2049 were genera-

ted collaboratively in a matter of minutes.

We at Brainswork have undertaken to analyze them very seriously. There are some very

clear directions as to the issues that are central to the majority of ideas proposed - and we've

grouped them around ten key points. This is a very valuable hint - it shows not just the direc-

tion where Europe should be heading, but also pinpoints targets and goals for the upcoming

work of the IncrediblEurope association.

Page 33: IncrediblEurope 2009

 Innovation & Creativity

The ten key issues

1. Europe's traditional culture is a major asset and inspiration for every field - from busi-

ness to politics!

2. European houses should be as affordable as cars, trains as fast as planes.

3. Europe needs brand new transportation: electric cars and better public transport.

4. Politics: stop struggling for today's interests and start solving tomorrow's challenges.

5. Green is the new black. And pink the new white. (And the World isn't just green and

pink.)

6. Europe must push for quality. Not speed.

7. Less hierarchic thinking for more innovative doing - the trainee manages the company

for a day.

8. Europe needs European role models recognizable in and beyond the continent. And

Europe needs European networks driving for change.

9. New education - which strongly appreciates and embraces difference and diversity,

learning from other Europeans and learning from our children.

10. Believe in ourselves - and in our shared, European identity. Fear can ruin any idea:

optimism is a key element of leadership.

We thank Mariana Ferrari (PROCESOi) for the exercise.
