1873. President Ulysses S. Grant became a member of this Post
on 16 May 1877, and remained a member until his death.

Twelve charter members. Financial problems caused a faction of
the membership to petition the Department to form a new Post.
The petition, dated 3 Aug. 1909, was denied in a refusal dated 7
Aug. 1909. In spite of this, the faction split off, naming themselves
the Henry R. Guss Association of Veterans, aka, Post "A." They
continued to conduct business as an unsanctioned Post until
1919.

was apparently a successor to an earier one formed in
Brownsville, Fayette County. The 1882 History of Washington
County explains that its members lost interest in it at an early date.

hands of the Californians."

1910), 149th PA Inf., a well-liked veteran who had come to Mt.
Holly Springs from Grand Rapids, MI. William Kennedy was a
charter member of Post 490. The National Tribune (27 Aug. 1885)
identifies the correct namesake as Levi Kennedy, "who was killed
at the battle of South Mountain."
