and so we then decided to expand upon this in a questionnaire and asked about what clothes are expected within the indie genre. Responses included ‘skinnys and a basic t-shirt’, ‘skinnys, vans, hoodies, button to the top’ and ‘skinny jeans, check shirts, cardigans, deck shoes.’ The fashion was also confirmed when analysing indie genre music video which contained a very similar style to the one suggested by fans that we had asked.

VIDEO1) CostumeWhen conducting market research, we asked an idea fan some questions relating to the genre. He said that fashion was a crucial part

We decided to follow this fashion convention as we found out how important fashion is within the indie

genre and therefore a crucial element in the success of our

music video.

VIDEO2) Hobbies From our audience research, we found out from surveying indie fans that their hobbies included things such as skateboarding and riding bikes. Therefore we wanted to include a mixture of live shots of the band performing, alongside casual shots of the band, including some typical indie genre hobbies.

We decided to conform to this convention as we felt it was a crucial link in the audience identifying our video to the indie genre.

VIDEO3) Location

One of the crucial elements in our video was the location that we used to shot our live shots. Based upon our own knowledge, we associated the indie genre with having quite a rebellious adventuress trait, so decided to film the live shots in an abounded visually striking old building. Having visually striking shots were also important as from previous knowledge we felt that there was more to the indie genre than fashion and the song, but art also played a big role in the appeal to its audience. We can identify is with The Temper Trap videos featuring visually striking shots.

1)Digipak- Layout

.

As shown in the examples to the right and below, a wide range of indie bands album artwork feature one image, with contrasting text overlaying. We conformed to this simple, yet effective convention as it was the most popular one within our relevant genre.

2)Digipak – Font

All the indie digipaks that we had analysed and seen outside of our project, writing styles varied. They were all very simplistic layouts with a range of different fonts. Bar a few exceptions, the majority were fairly clean cut and clearly displayed in order to catch the audiences eye. A lot of the fonts was the font associated with the band itself, such as The Killers dotted font often became a trademark for the band, not only on its album but also appearing on t-shirts. Therefore we decided to a Copper Black font, similar to the Jamie T album (right). The font placed alongside the images, was bold and stood out, following the convention from our research.

3)Digipak – Photography

5/6 of our images were taken from our music video, number 3 on the album. A lot of the indie albums images on their album artwork are relevant to the feel of the album, such as The Libertines are often seen as quite rebellious and therefore their artwork includes two males looking fairly rough and one of them is smoking - traits of being rebellious. So we tried to incorporate an image of the band at a train station (last shot at the end of our music video) into the digipak portraying a journey by the band.

1)Advert - Photography

The inspiration the image on our advert came from a Temper Trap video ‘My Sun’. The video consisted of several different images of the band grouped together to make it look like one picture, (see right). All the other adverts that we had seen included just one large centre piece image. We decided to conform to this convention to some extent, by including a large centre piece image, but instead of just the one images - we included 5 different ones, similar to the ‘My Sun’ video. However, by having a slightly different advert, it would stand out amongst the other adverts and conform to the indie convention of being a bit different and ‘alternative.’

2)Advert – Recommendations eg NME *****

From my advert research, there was no clear convention on the text of album adverts featuring reviews. However we decided to include one as it was a text filler rather than having a very simplistic advert, which none of our researched ones were. All three below feature a large image and various different text, with only one featuring reviews. Therefore we decided to follow an advert convention by including one large image (made up out of smaller images) and lots of text overlay.
