Bear one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.
Galatians 6:2
Dear Members of the Trinity Family,
Attending the Poverty Simulation that Trinity hosted on April 22 was a powerful experience for me and one that I am still processing. The family to which I was assigned (three TLC adults, one youth, and me) worked so hard to keep our family housed, fed, and safe, but, in spite of our tremendous efforts, we were not successful. Not only did we lose our home, but we also could not afford to purchase groceries. During that seventy-five minutes I got a small taste of what it is like to live in poverty. I felt hopeless, helpless, frustrated, isolated, and alone. The parents in our assigned family were college educated. They worked hard. We pulled together as a family, but due to circumstances beyond our control we could not provide for our basic needs.
Knowing that many families in our Greenville community live with this hopelessness and helplessness every day is heartbreaking. While I am pleased and proud of all the ways our family of faith at Trinity reaches out in love to support those who struggle with poverty, I feel compelled to do more. This experience renewed my sense of responsibility for our brothers and sisters in Christ who struggle every day with this growing problem. Each of us, in our baptism, is called to work for peace and justice in the world. We are called to bear one another’s burdens. We are called to stand in solidarity with our sisters and brothers who are struggling. We are called to give out of our abundance so that others’ basic needs can be met.
It is my hope that your commitment to working for peace and justice in our community and in our world will be strengthened and renewed. Let us strive to give more, love more, and serve more so that we might feed the hungry, comfort the sick, encourage the downtrodden, and bring hope, help, and healing to this broken, hurting world.
Peace, love, and joy, Pastor Susan Crowell

A Congregation of the
Evangelical Lutheran Church In America
At the April meeting of the Congregation Council, the council
---learned that Mike Boliek, Louise Fletcher, Dale Hamman, Amanda Mast, Philip Wessinger, Amy
Brown, Mandi Whitley, Pastor Parham, and Pastor Crowell will be serving as voting members at
the SC Synod Assembly and that Vicar Ellen would be attending as a visitor;
---learned that Mary Dickman Parris would be serving as Trinity’s seventh pastoral intern
beginning in late August;
---noted that expenses for April were $4,082 less than projected;
---learned that the Worship Committee is making Grace Bags containing food items and a list of
resources to distribute on Sunday mornings to worship guests who are seeking assistance; and
---heard a presentation from the Executive Committee noting that Trinity is exploring ways to
practice radical hospitality by extending welcome to marginalized people in the Greenville
community. In addition to creating opportunities to work toward racial reconciliation and to
better understand and respond to poverty in our community, the council is also investigating the
possibility of becoming a Reconciling in Christ (RIC) congregation, an ELCA designation noting that
a congregation is welcoming to all people, specifically the LGBTQIA community and those that
love and support them.
