One of the main criteria of progress and excellence in research and technology centers

is the production and publication of knowledge as well as a consistent tendency towards improving

the "targeted knowledge packages". This is so much emphasized in institutes and organizations that the

implementation of knowledge management therein would be impossible without it.

The predominance of a rather oral culture in Iran, has necessitated efforts for institutionalizing the cultures of documentation of

experiences and tacit knowledge and sharing and publication thereof much more.

The publication of scientific and technical books, papers, and reports had well been foreseen in the Article of Association of RIPI, which is the oldest—and by far the most reputable — research and development organization in Iran’s petroleum industry, and in the Middle East Regardless of its rather specific fields of interest for R&D activities, and due its scientific nature, RIPI has considered three different target groups ranging from petroleum industry managers, and academics to general public as audience to its publications.The special emphasis and focus placed on the publication of the knowledge and technology developed in RIPI’s statute reflect the ideals of the leaders of this scientific research center. However, it seems that no special attempts have been made in this regard as the mechanism of this activity had not fully been developed in this research institute and the available routine for this task lacked driving forces like extra bonuses to motivate researchers into authoring. Along with the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the institute, RIPI's Publication Center (RIPI Press) was formally founded. To this end, some improvements were made in the formerly active publication council and RIPI's regulations on compilation, translation, and publication of books and papers, to create a new and motivating environment in this regard.The Board of trustees of the Research Institute of Petroleum Industry, as the supreme decision-making authority of the institute, passed the revised regulations in its 10th meeting on September 20, 2010 facilitating the publication of the scientific and research outcome of the institutes, as one of the major purposes of the knowledge management system of the institute.The publication of 15 books in 2009, and 25 books in 2010, as well as the regular issuing of the "Petroleum Research" quarterly, and acquiring the official warrants for issuing the yet-to-come " Journal of Petroleum Science and Technology" are among the initial achievements of the center.The activities of research institute of petroleum industry press activities can be a suitable way of mutual communication between the researchers and scientists interested in the scientific and technical subjects, especially in the field of petroleum, which can hopefully help improve the knowledge and upgrade the technologies applicable to the petroleum industry.

Application of Biomarkers in Organic Geochemistry

The last two decades have witnessed progressive development in the application of biomarkers,in wich researchers from petroleum companies have had major contributions. Biomarkers are currently used as a tool in oil to oil and oil to source correlations. Moreover, biomarkers are used in the interpretation of paleo-depositional environment of organic matter, type of biological sources of oil and its maturity and even determining the age of hydrocarbon generated by a particular source stratum. Gas Chromatography –Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS2) and GCMSMS, equipped with softwares, are the advanced techniques developed to study biomarkers with much more detail. Although, these techniques are routinely used in most research centers, due to high analytical expenses and sensitivity their analyses have to be handled by skilled experts.

Scanning tunnelling microscopes are among the tools which can yield nanometer scale images of the surface of different samples. Electrochemical scanning tunnelling microscopes also constitute a powerful technique for the concurrent studies on the surface electrochemical reactions that can help study the topographic changes due to precipitation, absorption and solvent reactions. idea during the institute’s 50th anniversary. The task was assigned to the RIPI Press after being approved by
