On behalf of the management team and the Trustees, I would like to extend my thanks and appreciation to all staff for their continued commitment over the last few months. It hasn’t been an easy time due to the summer holiday period as well the as the impact of the swine flu outbreak. The hard work people have put in is also acknowledged in a number of Care Standards Inspection reports for our residential services in Wales and our Domiciliary Services in Shropshire. These reports are shared with the Board of Trustees who have asked me to pass on their appreciation to all staff. Our work in the East Midlands continues to give us many challenges and once again the help from staff to make things work has been huge. We have more schemes coming on line in the months ahead and we will include an update on the region in the next newsletter. There have also been a few opportunities in Wales for us to tender for new services and we are currently waiting to hear the outcome of our submissions in RCT and Pembrokeshire. In this edition, you will read a couple of articles regarding things that have happened for some of the people we support. It is important that we don’t lose sight of the reason we are here and that the main focus of what we do is working to improve their lives and opportunities. Consultation EventsOn the 22nd of April we held aConsultation Event for people who useour services in Shropshire. The eventwas supported by the Advocacy group‘Taking Part’. We also held an event inLlanelli in partnership with‘Carmarthenshire People First’

Why Consult?People already have a number ofways of being able to influence howtheir support is provided. There is theindividual planning system, care planmeetings, house meetings and theservice user survey. However, wethink its important to meet peopleface to face with independent supportfrom advocacy groups. This gives usa chance to give people informationas well as listen to peoples views. Itis also chance to discuss ‘big’ issuessuch as the environment and to havesome fun.

What happened? Both events had the same agenda. The Survey Results were presented.A Save the planet discussion took placein groups and then everyone’s ideaswere made up into a poster. Peoplewere told how to make complaints. There was an Open microphonesession in which people could talkabout any thing. And finally peopletold us what things we should startdoing, stop doing or continue doing.

What next?Feedback has been very positive andpeople seemed to have had a goodtime. A newsletter has beenproduced that reports on the days inmore detail. We plan to put on eventsin all the regions twice a year.

So, many thanks to everyone whotook part and thanks go toCarmarthenshire People First. Specialthanks go to Andrew Mayo whoworked really hard making them asuccess.

The Managers from the North decided to take part in this event, not only because they were doingsomething for charity and taking part in a teamevent, but recently a tenant was diagnosed with thecondition. This prompted them to do something andto raise lots of money for the cause. Chris Rees,Nicola Richards, Vanessa Gamble, Clair Barker, TinaHenley, Sian Loisz and Lynne Hughes, all did theirbit for charity’.

Chris said “like many people today we do not getthe opportunity to take part in enough exercise dueto our busy lifestyles, however this is one daywhere we made the effort to ‘walk’ in aid of such aworthwhile cause”.

Vanessa added “When we decided to take part, like

all women the dilemma was, what do we wear? Ithad to be something comfortable and practical.

There were suggestions of pink wigs and tutu’s. Butin the end the traditional T-shirt won! The companysponsored our T-shirts which had all of our namesprinted on the back. What to wear wasn’t the onlyproblem. What we would be called as our entrancename? We came up with, The Pink Perthyn’s!”

“We are hoping that our efforts and our financialcontribution towards the target of £62 million set byCancer Research UK will support the research thatcontinues to try to eradicate this condition”.

Many thanks go to all that supported this cause anddonated so generously!!

Race for LifeOn the 19th July this year a group of Managers from North Powys andShropshire took part in the CancerResearch UK’s Race for Life event inShrewsbury, Shropshire.

The old art room at Fairfield’s was beingconverted into a bedroom and separateshower room, and I was offered the choiceto move into it, so I jumped at this.

I found this very exciting as I was involved insome of the interior design which also includedchoices of colour.

My new room feels like a move forward as it isright at the top of the house and away from theothers so it feels like my own little house.

I have taken on extra responsibilities in my newroom as I now also have to keep the shower roomclean and tidy as well as my own room.

I am confident this will help me further myprogress into independent living.

South Road – Pembrokshire:Recently in South Road Pembrokeshire, service users have beenvery busy with local social events. It was Faye Griffith’s birthdayand she celebrated in the local night club with Anna-Marie Knight.

Also during a weekend of events organised in the local area at thebeginning of July, all the residents enjoyed activities in the MilfordCarnival, dancing the night away to an Abba Tribute band and a trip tothe Scarecrow Festival.

All the residents thoroughly enjoyed all the activities and are lookingforward to more days out in the future.
