REGGAEXCLUSIVE’S VIEWS

JULION’S VIEWS

One more quarter passesby as Canadian Reggae

continues its journey into moreand more Canadian homesinfiltrating more musicalpallets, encouraging possiblesales opportunities. In the lastissue, I took the time to focuson a negative that continues tostunt this ‘industry’ in ourcollective inefficiency to sellCanadian reggae music on aconsistent basis. Some folkstook great offense to the wordswritten, but truth be told, it’sall good with me if folks don’tshare my vision or opinions inan environment where there islimited growth of our genre. Itdoes show that we are not onthe same page, so there isdefinitely room for growth.

Many of those who tookoffense completely missed thepoint! The one who did notmiss the point was CarrieMullings – CHRY 105.5fm,Monday mornings 10:00am –12:00pm, the only Canadianreggae show that boastsplaying 100% Canadianreggae. And she does! Whenthe lynch mob was called torise against my words, Carriestood firm and refused toparticipate in the hanging ofthe truth. When I asked herwhy she didn’t get involvedwith criticism of my words, sheshocked me with herresponse… She said, “You areright, I don’t do enough…There are so many artistsmusic that I don’t have, many Idon’t know and who doesn’tknow of me… More needs tobe done!” In case you forgotthe three or so sentencesbefore, Carrie Mullings plays100% Canadian reggae.

As our conversationcontinued, we were speakingthe same language. We are /were addressing the sameissues of lack of sales

opportunities for Canadianreggae music and how toproperly address or changethat situation. One of myfrustrations and queries to herwas the lack of a Canadianreggae chart. So many radiopersonalities, so many shows,so many spins, and so manyyears and to my knowledgethere has NEVER been anagreed up, nationallysupported reggae chart. Somehave tried separately atdifferent times, but nothing ona collective basis. How doesthe rest of the world take usseriously if we don’t do itourselves? A chart indicatesthat there is something goingon and that we thinksomething of the music, so wetake the time to chart it. Ittells interested fans whichsongs and which artists are hotat the time and which tunes tobuy. It tells foreign DJs whichartists to contact! It createsinterest for the artists whowish to rise on the charts. Itincreases the quality of themusical production anddelivery. IT GROWS ANINDUSTRY!

Carrie went on to tell methat there will be nationalchart in the works and will behappening in January of 2008and that she and a few of thepersonalities were in talksabout the chart for some time.That made me smile! Specialmention has to go out toGalaxie internet radio withSteve Neale’s assistance hasbeen charting Canadianreggae for a time now and toget that info just check outwww.canadianreggaeworld.com/Galaxie-2007-09.htm as weput up that chart as Stevesends them and to find outmore about Galaxie check outwww.galaxie.ca. Before I go onto sing Carrie’s praises anyfurther I pay great respect toD.B. Hawkes, formerly of CIUT89.5fm, who propelled manylive acts to notoriety at his ownpersonal cost. Much respectto Patrick Roots, of CIUT89.5fm, who has alwaysopened his show to anyprogressive thinking artist topush themselves as well as tome personally giving CRWweekly spots to promote

Canadian reggae musicconsistently showing support.The King Turbo crew. CIUT, aswell as Ron Nelson, CKLN88.1fm for their pushing ofCanadian based artists withintheir circles, Leo Cripps inCalgary playing many all-Canadian shows selling andpromoting the music. Natty Bof CHRY 105.5fm, who not onlyplays the music but promotes aCanadian reggae chart.

As we propel into the 21stcentury we need a greaterpush by many of thesevolunteers, to be singleminded in their approach toselling Canadian. There maybe a bit of resistance now, butin time they will see theopportunities that will open forall of us. As I continued towrite, I thought it best thatCarrie answered somequestions and with thoseanswers, would shed a littlelight on her credentials as wellas what she is all about, and achance for you thereader/listener to aid in hercontinued growth if you wishto see further ‘upliftment’ ofthe Canadian reggae scene.

Q. Rhythm365.com’srelationship with you...

A. I was introduced towww.rhythm365.com thru KingDavid while co-hosting withhim on his show PositiveVibrations that airs Fridays 10a.m. - 12 p.m. On July 29th,2005 Tony Williams and crewcame to Canada to showcaseCanadian Talent andrhythm365 DJs along with KingDavid and myself at ClubParadise. While in Canada Mr.Williams heard a recording ofthe Monday morning fill-in spotI was doing that I startedcalling “Rebel Vibez”. The“Singers in the Neighborhood”segment had him interestedand with very little discussion Iwas linked up to a simulcastwith www.rhythm365.com. Wehave been running the link for28 months now. Thank youTony Williams!

Q. Relationship and workwith Montreal ReggaeFestival...

A. My relationship beganwhen two of Toronto’s invited

radio personalities did notshow at the festival in 2004and the opportunity presenteditself for me to fill their MCspots on the festival. It initiallywas a couple intros the firstday but the festivalSpokesperson and Host invitedme to do more over theremainder of the weekend.

Q. CHRY 105.5, how longon air, how you came up withthe idea for an ALL Canadianshow…

A. I have been on air withCHRY since 2003. I started onCaribbean Crucible withLuther Brown, G-Russ andTipper then joined CoolRunnings with Sir B. I startedfilling in a TBA spot Mondays inthe latter part of 2004. In 2005the spot was given to RebelVibez and starting this year wechanged our content whichwas 70% Canadian and 30%International to 100%Canadian Content. StrictlyHomegrown as I like to refer toit. The idea is merely that ofrepresenting your own talent.Canada has a massive wealthof talented artists andmusicians in our reggaeindustry that aren’t getting theamount of airplay it takes to“BUSS” an artist. There aremany reggae shows on CHRY’sstation but there wasn’t aCanadian Reggae show, so Iguess you can say I was fillinga void. Rebel Vibez has beenbroadcasting 5 hour shows onthe holidays for 2 years now. Iwould love to do a 5 hourbroadcast weekly! Rebel Vibezis not the first to providelisteners with 5 hourbroadcasts of CanadianReggae; King David did itbefore I did. You know KingDavid was the first person toshare his stage with me? KingDavid was master ofceremonies at Steele’sUncorrupted CD Launch andhe handed me the microphoneand encouraged me to go onstage and introduce an artist. Iremember shaking and KingDavid telling me not to benervous I could do it and I did.Thanks King David!!

Q. Why continue with an AllCanadian show? Is it popular?

By: Jason van Rassel, CalgaryHerald. (Published: Tuesday,November 20, 2007)

Members of a local reggaeband seriously hurt in a high-way rollover three months agoare slowly recovering, with alittle help from their friends.In the immediate days follow-ing the Aug. 18 crash, friendsweren’t sure whether Ibowould live or die. He sufferedcritical spinal and headinjuries when the van carryinghim and five other musiciansleft the Trans-Canada Highwaynear Brooks and rolled. Ibo,44, remains in a Calgary hospi-tal, but doctors recentlyremoved a surgical “halo”immobilizing his head, and heis walking and talking. It’sincredible how well he’s doing,

considering what he’s beenthrough,” said Leo Cripps,president of the CalgaryInternational Reggae Festival.Cripps visited Ibo two weeksago. He said Ibo’s progress is a“miracle” and the musician isin good spirits. “I had a con-versation with him and I was-n’t expecting to,” he said.

Ibo and his backing band,Kindread, were on their way toplay at Calgary’s reggae festi-val after a gig in Regina whenthe crash happened. Threemembers of Kindread werealso seriously hurt, while afifth band mate and a soloartist riding with the bandescaped with cuts and bruis-es. The cause of the collisionis still under investigation bythe RCMP. Prior to striking outon his own, Ibo was a longtimemember of the Calgary bandStrugglah. He has toured andopened for reggae legends likethe Wailers and Jimmy Cliff.Ibo also contributed music towhat is believed to be the firstCanadian reggae compilation,which came out earlier thisyear. More than half the pro-ceeds from sales of the $25disk are going toward helpingIbo and his band matesthrough their recuperation andrehabilitation. Another friendof Ibo’s said it’s not yet knownhow quickly and to whatextent he’ll regain all his facul-ties. The friend, speaking oncondition of anonymity, saidIbo is facing between threeand six months of rehabilita-tion. “He’s come really far,he’s walking and he’s up doingphysiotherapy,” she [email protected]. © The CalgaryHerald 2007.

REGGAEXCLUSIVE’S INTERVIEW

REGGAEXCLUSIVEREASONS WITH THEORIGINAL SINGJAYTONY REBELBy Lisa Connors

RReeggggaaeeXX:: Greetings Tony,welcome to Toronto at

Rastafest 2007. Thank you forthe wonderful show last night.You also performed atReggaefest in Montreal. Howwas that?

TToonnyy RReebbeell:: MontrealReggaefest was fantastic! Wedidn’t get enough time but thetime that we did have wasutilised properly and theaudience loved it! Theaudience was huge. Canada iswonderful. Canada is abeautiful place especially inthe summer. The people arefine too. It is always one of ourfavourite places.

RReeggggaaeeXX:: You’ve been inthe music business for manyyears and you are seen as aninnovator, an originator of thesingjay style. How does it feelto be an innovator in Reggae?

TToonnyy RReebbeell:: Well it always awarm feeling to know thatsomething that stands out inearth could really comethrough you. Such a goodfoundation. It is always a goodthing. The new wave of culturesingers that came in the 90’s, Idon’t want to say I amresponsible for it but I wasused as an instrument toestablish it. I realize that beinga Dj which I love so much if youjust dj your songs without amelody it could getmonotonous sometimes so I

decided to put a little melodywith it and see if I could bringsome sweetness to thathardcore so it was more on thecutting edge, so the singjaywas coined.

RReeggggaaeeXX:: Your song writingabilities are so strong and youhave so many hits. When youare writing your songs does itever occur to you that you havea hit on your hands?

TToonnyy RReebbeell:: Yes definitely. Afew times there are a fewsurprises but usually I know.When I got the inspiration forJah by my side I knew. I wasdriving about 1 am and I wentand woke up my brother and Isaid look we have to tape this. Isaid this song is really a hitsong.

RReeggggaaeeXX:: Many of yoursongs have become Reggaeanthems like Jah is by my side,Fresh Vegetable, Know Jah.

TToonnyy RReebbeell:: It’s good tohave songs that are a stapleeverywhere in the world. I canalways expect a goodresponse.

RReeggggaaeeXX:: You know it’sreally huge when you have torelease it in French andSpanish!

TToonnyy RReebbeell:: (Laughter)Definitely! It’s always a goodvibe when you have thosemasterpieces, then if you don’tget a chance to record anymoreyou can always use those.People will always want to hearthose. The Reggae market isvery huge all over the world.

RReeggggaaeeXX:: Can you tellReggaeXclusive readers aboutyour volunteer work inJamaica?

TToonnyy RReebbeell:: In terms ofdoing voluntary service, I havebeen doing that from a youthbut since I became popular itbecame more pronounced.After a while I became thePresident of Artistes AgainstAids and I was a part of and stillam a part of Committee forCommunities. I wrote a songfor the United Nations in theyear of the volunteer. It was thechosen song in the midst ofover 30 countries I actuallywent to the United Nations hallof assembly in Manhattan and

did it in front of Kofi Anan andthe Prince of Spain andPresident of Zambia, actuallyhe was the one who introducedme on stage. So it was a goodvibe. Also Harry Bellefontecame to Jamaica one time tohelp to sensitise the people ofthe Caribbean about the deadlydisease, Aids. That is when weformed the triple Aorganization of Artistes AgainstAids of which I am thechairperson. So it is not allabout getting. You have to giveback and sometimes when yougive of yourself that is whenyou truly give. It’s not all aboutmoney even though there is atime for the dollar sign. Wehave to always make sure thatwe do what we can do. I thinkthat is the whole purpose ofhuman beings is to preserveearth and preserve life and tolive for our fellow humans.

RReeggggaaeeXX:: You have quite agreat group of people aroundyou with Flames Productions,your Reggae family.

TToonnyy RReebbeell:: Yes mon. Fromlong-time Garnett Silk used tobe at Flames, Everton Blender,Ras Shiloh and many more.Now we have Queen Ifrica, oneof our latest products. She istaking off in the music scene,and the music world. We neverdo it selfishly; we always try tobring somebody in.

RReeggggaaeeXX:: Is producingother artistes something thatyou will continue to do?

TToonnyy RReebbeell:: Yes mon. Iproduced a song with QueenIfrica and Gentleman, RitchieSpice, Luciano and on and on.

RReeggggaaeeXX:: What is new andfresh coming out right now?

TToonnyy RReebbeell:: Right nowQueen Ifrica’s album is just out.It’s called Fyah Muma andwe’re promoting that. Also, myalbum I Rebel is out and we’repromoting that. There’s a newsong that I have called Lovefyah on the Baltimore riddim, Ijust did it for Sly and Robbie. Ijust came back from Europe fortwo weeks hit all the majorfestivals from Germany, wherewe did Reggae Summer Jam.We did Rotterdam and Italy, andwe did another festival inBelgium, Portugal… We keep

on working, moving out thereand delivering the message.Recording at the same time.I’m trying to complete myrecording studio. I have a littleone but I am trying to completeanother one that is morecomfortable where I can domore work. You will see moreof our production coming forth.

RReeggggaaeeXX:: You have made alot of people happy over theyears with your music. Yourperformance last night atRastafest here in Toronto wasoutstanding. These types ofevents are very consciousnessraising. How did Rebel Salutecome about?

TToonnyy RReebbeell:: Rebel Salutecame about as a Birthday orEarthday on the 15th ofJanuary. So because I don’tdrink alcohol I don’t sell any.My music is about inspirationand motivation. So we as theartistes provide that for thepeople. It’s a spiritualrenaissance. It’s like apilgrimage at the beginning ofthe year. The people help toinspire the continuation of itThe people love it.

RReeggggaaeeXX:: You are living byexample of what Rasta livity isreally supposed to be. Byrejecting the alcohol andshowing people the consciousway.

TToonnyy RReebbeell:: Well definitely.If you don’t use certain things, Idon’t see why you should beselling it either. Even thoughwe could get millions of dollarswe don’t accept it, we will notsell that product. We can’t bebribed. If you fall for that youwill fall for anything.

RReeggggaaeeXX:: Keep up the goodworks! Where are you off tonext?

TToonnyy RReebbeell:: I’m going backto Jamaica, just chilling til I goback to Europe.

RReeggggaaeeXX:: Tony, Torontoloves you and the wholeReggae world loves you! Thankyou so much for doing what youdo and for just being you.

TToonnyy RReebbeell:: Thank you andkeep publishing the goodworks. Jah Bless.

REGGAEXCLUSIVE’S INTERVIEW

REGGAEXCLUSIVECHATS WITHJAMAICA’S GOLDENVOICE RICHIESTEPHENS

RReeggggaaeeXXcclluussiivvee:: Welcome toCalgary Reggaefest 007. We’revery happy to have you here,such a great international act inour city.

RRiicchhiiee SStteepphheennss: Thank You!

RReeggggaaeeXX: You’ve beenknown as Jamaica’s Goldenvoice now for decades. How wasyour career before that, goingback to your first big break?

RR SS:: Well I started out a longtime ago. I’ve been a communityentertainer for a number ofyears. Then home being justeighteen miles form Negril, backthen was the show capital of theworld. So I used to get theopportunity to go down to Negrilto sing on stage shows everynow and again. But the real bigbreak came back in 1987 when Idid my first recording. I’veactually been in the game since1984. That makes it 24 years.

RReeggggaaeeXX: You’ve become ahousehold name in Jamaica, andin places like Europe. How hasyour reception been the U.S andCanada?

RR SS: It’s great. As you canimage the West Indiancommunity is very big there. InCanada it’s basically the samething. Last week’s show, thepeople really got what theycame for!

RReeggggaaeeXX:: In Toronto?RR SS:: Yeah at the Waterfront. I,

Sugar Minott and FreddieMcGregor were there. It was anice vibe. So I am happy to sayand I give thanks everyday toknow that it is established inmany parts of the world thatpeople listen to Reggae music.

RReeggggaaeeXX:: Is there anywhere

you would like to break into themarket that you haven’t yet?

RR SS:: I’d really love to breakinto the market in all thoseplaces where Reggae is notestablished yet. The world is abig market and if you can tapinto it here there andeverywhere you can do moreshows and make more money.So I’d love to tap into any marketwhere Reggae music in notpopular.

RReeggggaaeeXX:: I understandyou’re involved in events inJamaica, such as the Take MeAway Charity concerts. How andwhen did that all get started?

RR SS:: The Take Me Awayconcerts basically stated in1995. The last one we did wasthe third one. Proceeds fromthat show go towards charity. It’sbeen going strong. People reallysupport that type of event basedon the nature of it. It didn’t startthere for me as far as charity isconcerned. It started way backin 1991 with a show called UnitySplash, a show that gives backto my community and tocommunities outside of myhome town as well. So I’ve beendoing charity for a long time butmore recently, a lot of peoplestarted to discover that I’ve beeninto charity based on the factthat I have adopted a golden agehome for the aged and havebeen doing work that has cometo the attention of the media.

RReeggggaaeeXX:: I understand youwere recognized for your effortsbeing given the HumanitarianAward in 2006.

RR SS:: Yes. I got that awardfrom different organizations but Iwas given that one lately by theF.I.U (Florida InternationalUniversity). It’s really nice to beawarded for the things that youare doing. An award to me is notreally what I am looking for. Ialways say to my friends I lookforward to my reward from God.That is my main motivation forwhat I am doing. But Awards areappreciated! Recently I receivedone of the most prestigiousawards from the GovernorGeneral of Jamaica. That wardhas nothing to do with music butfor some of the work I’ve done inand out of my community. Thereare several awards that I havebeen getting and again I thankGod for the recognition. Not only

for me, but by being awardedthen the work that I am doing isnow highlighted and that is howI can influence other people toget involved because there isabsolutely nothing wrong with it!

RReeggggaaeeXX:: Definitely! Comingback to the music here, who aresome of the artistes that youadmire?

RR SS:: In terms of music?

RReeggggaaeeXX:: Musically andotherwise.

RR SS:: Put it this way, I am asupporter of good talent anddecent behaviour of each humanbeing. So those of who live up tothose standards, I respect them.So many artistes are doing wellin those respects so I can’t pickjust one or two! I’m a supporterof many artistes that are livingup!

RReeggggaaeeXX:: Who inspires you?RR SS:: Dennis Brown is the first

artiste that I identified with as ayoungster coming up. I admirehis style, voice, melodies, andhis words over the years so he ismy main inspiration. But I listento all the greats, Bob Marley,Luther Vandross, Patty LaBelle.

RReeggggaaeeXX:: How many albumshave you released to date?

RR SS:: To date, thirteenalbums.

RReeggggaaeeXX:: After having a lotof commercial success on youralbums, what prompted you tostart your own label?

RR SS:: Well they say God Blessthe child that has his own.(laughter) It was a great move forme at the time. Based on thelevel of piracy and all thedifferent technologies that allowpeople to access music easilyand put a big pressure on therecord companies it makesindependent distribution andselling music on the internetbecome more popular now. Igive thanks to know I’m creatingmy own with an independentlabel. It keeps me going on anon. I can create an album anytime I want. Good music neverdies!

RReeggggaaeeXX:: If you weren’tRitchie Stevens the singer, whowould you be?

RR SS:: You tell me! (laughter) Itry to figure that out all the time!I honestly can’t come up with

who I’d be because I’ve neverhad a nine to five. I can’t say I’dbe a carpenter or a doctor. It’sjust always been music for me!

RReeggggaaeeXX:: Clearly yourdestiny!

RR..SS:: Yes!

RReeggggaaeeXX:: Where have youbeen touring recently?

RRSS:: I’ve been really busydoing a lot of shows thissummer. Last week I did a showin Toronto, and then I went toSan Francisco to do a big showcalled the Reggae Rising. Thatwas a major festival with about40,000 people. Then we went toL.A, and then back to Jamaicanow I’m back in Calgary to dothe Reggae Festival, after that Igo to New York and then back toJamaica. I’m looking forward togoing to Japan this year, Europenext year and the Caribbeanalways. You can just Island hop!

RReeggggaaeeXX:: Where do you getthe inspiration to write suchgreat songs like Joy andWeakness for Sweetness?

RRSS:: Well it comes naturallyfor me. I could be sitting heretalking to you and all of a suddena melody comes out in my head.If I feel it enough I will probablyput it down on a dictaphone likethis or ignore the melody and if Iwake up tomorrow and still feelit I know I must do somethingabout it. I might be just talking tosomeone and they saysomething and it just clicks andthere goes a song. I might betalking to a beautiful girl like youand by talking to her there goesa nice song. (laughter)

RReeggggaaeeXX:: You are known foryour highly energetic stageperformances. Is that always theway you perform?

RRSS: That is a natural part ofme. I like to sweat when I’m onstage! I am not the kind ofvocalist that concentrates onnotes when I’m on stage. I loveto run all over the place. I preferto give you a good show ratherthan a perfect vocalperformance.

JAMAICA’S GOLDENVOICE RICHIESTEPHENS(Cont’d. from page 17)

RReeggggaaeeXX:: The Reggae musicindustry is strong in manyplaces like Jamaica, Europeand Japan. What do you think isneeded to expand it?

RRSS:: I think us as an industryneed to take a look atpromoting our music and usmore. Not necessarily treat allthe performances like a show,in other words some gigs don’tpay much money but they arepromoting the music. Like forinstance there is a new marketdeveloping in South Americaand some of the promoters arenot able to pay the money thatthe bigger markets are able topay. Some artistes probablydon’t want to go because theydon’t feel they are getting paidenough. But I would say tothem, sometimes ignore theamount of money so you cansow the seeds that you willreap somewhere down the line.By going there the music getsbigger and more popular, startsplaying in the homes. The kidswill accept it more. So thoseare some of the areas that weneed to look into as an industry,ya understand?

RReeggggaaeeXX:: For sure. Is thereanything you’d like your fans toknow about you that they may

not already know?RRSS:: (laughter) Well I believe

in reinventing myself. I’ve beenin the game for a long time butI’m not one of those artistesthat is just comfortable withmyself. I’m still trying to writebetter songs and still trying toproduce better and make everyperformance better. If you seeme ten times before and thenyou see me tomorrow then Iwant to impress you in a waythat you will say wow he’sgotten better. So I’m alwaysputting out an effort in what I’mdoing.

RReeggggaaeeXX:: So what do youhave in store for your fans atReggaefest tomorrow?

RS :(laughter) Be there,come out early. The band isvery good. I rehearsed withthem on Wednesday; musicallyit’s really up there. I’m happywith it. The background singersand everything. I’m going to doa pretty long show because Iwas asked to so I’m not gonnabe in a rush. I’m gonna reallyperform for the people ofCalgary. My intention is to comeback next year so I want to earnmy trip for next year! (laughter)

RReeggggaaeeXX:: I’m sure you willand we are all looking veryforward to it! Thank you verymuch!

RRSS:: You’re welcomesweetheart!
