    The technique o f r ing-ne t t ing has been u t i l i z edfo r h arv es t in g h er r in g and mackere l in Scot land fo rhundreds of years . In 1972, t h i s method o f f i sh ing wasin t roduced in to Newfoundland. During the pas t few yearsunder cos t / sha re p rogr ams between Indus t r i a l DevelopmentBranch and th e P ro vin cia l Department of Fisher ies , Scot t i shr ing-ne t spec i a l i s t s have been employed to t r a in Newfoundlf ishermen in t h i s f i sh ing method. The r i ng -ne t f l e e t hasexpanded over the pas t three years from one pa i r toapproximately 30 pa i r s , with new a dd it io ns to the ee tevery f i sh ing season .
