The PRETSS Framework
Why applying the PRETSS framework in Latin America
makes sense
• The key to Austrade’s Lat Am strategy is a focus on
identifying cross-sectoral opportunities.
• The PRETSS framework facilitates identification of local
needs/gaps and matching these to Australian capabilities
and strengths.
• We encourage your institution to utilise the PRETSS
framework as well.

Key challenges in Latin America to consider
• May be hard to find an appropriate, quality partner
amongst the numerous providers (sometimes poorly
established quality assurance systems).
• Limited English language capabilities.
• Relatively high travel costs.
• Lack of familiarity with the local context and doing
business in Latin America.
• Establishment regulations and legal frameworks may be
complex or difficult to navigate.
Some tips
• Know your strengths and capabilities.
• Really know your TRUE strengths and capabilities –
brutal honesty is required.
• Find and pursue the right opportunities for you.
• Latin America is big – really big – choose the right
country based on all of the above.
• Don’t get on a plane unless you have a strategy.
