INTRODUCTION

Augustus Brandt Gallery, in partnership with Contemporary British Silversmiths, is delighted to present ‘Living Silver, Contemporary Silver for the Home’. This exhibition reveals the highly creative, innovative and technically skilled work of some of the leading British silversmiths today. The selected pieces demonstrate how both contemporary and traditional homes can be enhanced by unique, beautiful examples of contemporary silver, and in turn how silver, with its varied surface qualities and appearances, can ‘live’ within an interior context. These works of art can also be admired and valued as functional objects, in many regards reflecting our much-changed social practices and fashions in the home. Rooted in the tradition of silversmithing that spans well over 500 years, all the pieces are hallmarked by the different Assay Offices still active today: Birmingham, Edinburgh, London and Sheffield.

ABIGAIL BROWNAbigail specialises in traditional hammer forming techniques such as raising, sinking and chasing. Her work is a result of her deeply rooted relationship with the land and is a celebration of minimalism, form, materials and elemental creativity. Abigail’s award winning work has been exhibited internationally.

Hammer formed, this piece is based on the landscape of the female body, yet is also ambiguous in appearance.

This deep relief chased vessel is designed to be reminiscent of the exposed landscape of the Cornish peninsula. The texture represents the windswept atmosphere of Penwith, whilst the heightened directional hammer marks evoke the branching heather that creates the form of the vessel.

Inspired by the vast landscape of the Tundra in the Arctic National Park, this hammer formed and oxidised piece is based on tiny seed pods of the autumn vegetation.

The result of a lifelong interest in ancient monuments and subsequent lichen and mosses. Within this artwork the lichen represents the symbiotic relationship our ancestors had with the land and their environment.

ALEX O’CONNOR Alex designs silverware and wearable sculptures that are unadorned yet subtly tactile, celebrating the material and evoking ephemeral sensations through the metal. Vessel forms are a consistent presence and rendered as potent, archetypal objects designed to serve a contemplative purpose. They are containers for memory, meaning and a sense of place; sculptural pieces merging ideas, form and technique. Alex lives in West Cornwall and this powerfully elemental location has a profound influence on her practice.

ANA MENESESAna’s techniques are strongly rooted in the handmade traditions of silversmithing and this enables her to formulate a particular approach. Inspired by the urban landscape, Ana creates by hand one-off functional objects, formed by clean lines, unusual angles and irregular perspectives; capturing distinctive movement and asymmetry, that influences the composition of the design. In 2016 Ana was shortlisted for the first Artist in Residence at The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Collection, V&A Museum, and her work has been featured both nationally and internationally.

The Frame Vase is designed to expose the essence of what a glass vase does for flowers; showing the journey of the stem through the water until it reaches the bloom.

This vase is cleverly designed to balance perfectly at an angle, it takes a single flower and creates a framed environment. The vase and the flower bring each other to life and simultaneously celebrate the beauty of form and nature.

ANNA LORENZ Anna works across the disciplines of jewellery, silversmithing and sculpture. Her work is diverse and multi-layered; utilising gold and metalworking techniques to investigate formal concerns of structure, space, layering and depth. Conceptual thinking questions the transformation of materials and the importance of the creative engagement for the individual. Anna’s work is represented in many international and national public and private collections.

Traditional techniques have been used to hand-raise a Britannia silver grid into a useful object. The original geometric shapes distort in an unpredictable nature, yet the outer form of the bowl is fluid and clear. The fruit bowl, transparent and light as an item, transforms with the colour of the fruits it holds and creates a centre piece for a personal space.

Wire Ball (Small)Sterling silver, stainless steel10 cm. diameter £666

Inspired by contemporary architecture, Anna is interested in the relationship between the inner and outer space of an object. As functional pieces, the wire balls are unusual in the way the fruits are seemingly trapped within the structure. The riddle of how to get to the fruits is easily solved, by parting the stainless steel to reach inside what reaches out.

Through the use of traditional techniques, together with the combination of contrasting materials, Jacqueline explores her interest in changing dining rituals and cultural customs. KAY IVANOVIC Kay’s work is characterised by expressive and fluid movement. To achieve curvaceous forms, numerous steel and wood stakes are made; over and into which the silver sheet is worked. Kay has also evolved a special technique of multi-layered etching, producing a tactile design in relief on the surface, flowing around and enveloping the form. Kay’s work is held in numerous collections, both public and private.

JULIETTE BIGLEYJuliette makes silver sculptures that explore how the intangible aspects of our existence interact with the physical aspects of our world to produce the environments that shape our lives. Through the act of making, which bridges the divide between internal and external, Juliette is able to explore how we negotiate our emotional and physical place in the world. Her work uses the connections between space, form and containment to explore the relationship between the body and self. Juliette has exhibited widely, and was selected by the Design Council as ‘One to Watch’. She has received various awards and her first publication, Material Perspectives was published in 2018.

MARY ANN SIMMONSA practising silversmith for over 25 years, Mary Ann specialises in the art of contemporary box-making. Using this technique, she produces a range of silverware both for the table and as decorative silver objects. She has won numerous awards, and her work is collected by the Goldsmiths’ Company, where she is a Liveryman.

In this set the straight sides of box making gives way to an exploration of curves. These vessels are exact replicas in shape, and changing their alignment allows for a variety of curved constructs. Contrasting in colour, the tradition of high polished silver is exchanged for softer surfaces; one of silky whitened silver the other of luxurious, oxidised, blackened silver.

MIRIAM HANIDAward-winning Miriam Hanid is best known for her distinctive sculptural silver, which includes functional and purely decorative pieces, mostly inspired by water, movement and the natural world. Using her signature techniques, she creates deceptively simple organic and tactile shapes. She has created pieces for private and public collections and in 2012 she was commissioned to produce a silver band to be presented to the Queen for her Diamond Jubilee.

NAAMA HANEMANNaama Haneman is a silversmith who sculpts in metal and lets emotions and movement guide the end result, creating expressive vessels that often look as if they have been made from a very soft material like clay. Functionality is not an important part of her practice despite her choice of form, which suggests containing something inside. Naama has won a number of silversmithing awards and exhibits worldwide.

These bowls have been created through raising, chasing and repoussé. Each work freezes moments from the process and keep them in the final work and echoes inspiration taken from the juxtaposition of chaos and order that co-exist in nature.

PHIL JORDAN Phil Jordan is an award-winning contemporary silversmith who draws upon a number of different areas of inspiration. He particularly enjoys exploring the contrast between the organic fluidity of nature and the rigidity of man-made contemporary architecture. Using various techniques, Phil allows the silver a certain amount of influence over its final shape. The hammer marks created during the making of the piece are often left on the surface of the silver to show the journey from paper design to the silverware that sits before you.

STEFAN TOOKEWhilst at university, Stefan developed a love of spoons and post graduation worked for Chris Knight and Wrights silverware, further exploring the subject. The aim of Stefan’s work is to strike a balance between function and aesthetic. He appreciates curvaceous forms that fit the contours of the hand, with clear flowing lines and unadorned surfaces.

STUART JENKINSExploring precious metals’ natural qualities, and how it reacts to different techniques, has been the source for many of Stuart’s ideas. Letting the material have a life of its own, shapes and ideas can be suggested through the making process, and followed through to their natural conclusion. Contrast is used to create a visual palette. A simple hand raised bowl can become a document of its own making, not just a silhouette, but a vessel containing the energy used to create it.
