SILVERSMITHS IN THE 1770’S
WHAT THEY DID
•Trained apprentices to be as good or better than themselves
• Made plates, pots, silverware, etc.
•Apprentices worked with a master for seven years
TOOLS THAT THEY USED• Hammers
• Tongs
• Ladles
• Gravers
•Refining Furnaces
• Shears
APPRENTICES •Apprentices were given food, shelter, and clothing from
their master
•Worked for a master for seven years
•More than one apprentice at a time
HOW THEY WERE PAID
• Each silversmith was paid a different amount
• They got paid based on the quality of their work
•Speed of their work was important
•Also had to be a good businessman
