The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) is a world class centre renowned
for its concentration of teaching and research across the full range of the social, political and
economic sciences. LSE aims to be a laboratory of the social sciences, a place where ideas
are developed, analysed, evaluated and disseminated around the globe.
The environment that these activities are undertaken within is critical to their successful
outcome. Imtech Meica were appointed in partnership with Bovis Lend Lease to carry out the
mechanical and electrical services refurbishment to various areas within the Lionel Robbins
Building including the main library. This involved replacing the entire heating system and a
complete re-wire and luminaire replacement across three fully occupied floors.
"I write to express my appreciation of the excellent work you have completed during the
summer and Christmas vacation periods. All this work was carried out to a very high
standard whilst the library remained fully operational. It is to your credit that throughout the
works disruption to staff and students was kept to a minimum.Your management team was
of a very high standard and all work was completed to programme. Your company will
certainly be considered for future work."

Imperial College is one of the UK’s top 10 ranked universities and is renowned worldwide
for providing graduates to the Mechanical Engineering field. The project comprised of the
refurbishment of levels 0,1,2,8 and 9 of the Mechanical Engineering Building.
Work commenced on site in July 2009 on site with a thorough investigation of all services
within the building including all services risers. From the site investigations a period of six
months was spent diverting the existing services to enable the project to proceed, and also
to record and document the services both historically and for the installation of future works.
Working in conjunction with the professional team Meica was responsible for the design and
installation of the mechanical and electrical services to the client’s specification.
A number of Key elements in the project included:
• The installation of an all welded stainless steel extraction system capable of extracting
up to 1 Megawatt of heat from the High pressure Combustion Cells. The installation
was highly insulated to provide a touch temperature of 50°C at the system surface.
Other than the support system all other elements were bespoke to the process and
were specifically designed to meet the customer’s requirements.
• The installation of a high pressure hydraulic ring main system serving the Heavy
Mechanical testing facility.
• The installation of all mechanical and electrical systems to provide functionality and
comfort for the occupants of the building including:
• LTHW
• Air Conditioning
• Life Support Systems
• Laboratory Gases
• LV Lighting and Power Distribution
• Plumbing and drainage systems
• High Pressure Natural Gas Installation – 1 bar rated
• Compressed Air Installation

Bodleian Book Storage Facility is a purpose built facility situated on a 15 acre-site in South
Marston providing storage for up to 8 million volumes of books. The storage facility has
153miles of shelving, contained within 31 narrow aisles, each of which is 71metres long.
The building has a close controlled environment to ensure the books are stored in an
optimum space with temperature & humidity conditions closely controlled and monitored.
The conditions of temperature and humidity are controlled within a control band of 17-19°C
and 45-55%RH.
A displacement ventilation system was designed and installed in order to achieve a highly
efficient air distribution throughout the chambers. The displacement of air at low level takes
advantage of the difference in air density between the upper contaminated zone and the
lower clean zone. The chambers were particularly suited to this system due to the height of
the building, the high air flow rate of 14m3/s and a supply air temperature suitable to avoid
the risk of drafts, these parameters ensured suitability for the internal environment.
The chamber’s stringent humidity requirement was attained by using a low chilled water
temperature (3/9˚c) to ensure dehumidification of the air prior to its entry into the storage
facility. The design of the ventilation system is such that it incorporates a smoke extract
system for the prevention of smoke damage to the archived books. An aspirating fire alarm
system providing an extremely quick response was designed and installed in the book
storage area of the building.
Due to the height of the building High Bay Racking luminaries with fluorescent tubes were
used in order to ensure the required lighting levels would be achieved at ground level.
A central battery system located on the roof is used for the emergency lighting; this negates
the use of individual battery packs and gives rise to easy maintenance.
