43Winter 2019 – GLOUCESTER COUNTY CHAMBER THE VOICE

The World Health Organization recently estimated that stress costs U.S. companies at least $300 bil-lion a year through absenteeism, turnover and low productivity. Multiple other studies highlight what corporations have suspected - that stress and a lack of employee wellbeing negatively effects their bot-tom line.

The average employee has also been asked to do more with less, particularly since the economic crash of 2008. Add to it that employees sit an aver-age of seven hours a day while commuting an aver-age of an hour a day to and from work, this leaves little time for exercise and other self-care needs.

These health issues are the reason why many companies are starting and improving employee wellness programs.

A study by Towers Watson Wyatt and the National Business Group on Health revealed that organizations with highly effective wellness pro-grams report significantly lower voluntary attrition than do those whose programs have low effective-ness (nine percent vs. 15 percent). When Johnson & Johnson assessed the value of its wellness pro-grams, it discovered it saved $250 million on health care costs for the company during the past decade.

As part of the wellness programs companies are starting to offer, many include providing yoga instruction. Yoga combines both mindfulness and physical activity, which is helpful to employees as they manage the everyday demands of their jobs. Benefits of Yoga Yoga is a form of exercise known to increase flexibility, strength, balance, concentration and breathing ability while reducing stress and anx-iety. It helps boost morale and interpersonal communication – which for an employer can mean less bickering among teams, less dissatis-fied workers, and a reduction in power struggles or dirty politics.

Equipment costs are limited to mats, an instructor and space. Yoga can be modified to fit all health levels and can be scheduled at times and locations convenient to employees and employers.

Holding company yoga classes is a way to improve workplace morale, increase productiv-ity and bring everyone together to do something fun as a group. It can be a welcomed break to a busy work day or a relaxing way to de-stress at the end of the day. p
