EDUCATION WEEK Throughout the whole of last week our school celebrated Education Week with a number of events. On Wednesday it was fabulous to see many family members come into the school and it’s classrooms to see the wonderful work done by all our students and their teachers. The barbecue was a big hit and the smell of a “snag on the barbie” drifted across the whole school. After everyone was satisfied with a sausage in bread, the Education Week Assembly began. It was a chance to recognise the role of families, teachers and community in the education process. A number of EdWeek awards were handed to deserving students across all years. We were also treated to some fabulous performances by the School Band, the Junior Choir, the Stage 2 Choir as well as two wonderful vocal solos by Ava McLellan and Chia McGrath. Well done to everyone involved, it was a great day. WEEKLY SCHOOL RULE

The focus this week is the orange rule “complete all work”. We ask that you reinforce this week’s rule at home with your child.

NEWS FROM OUR PRINCIPAL MR TREVOR MULLIGAN

EDUCATION WEEK “I learn: we learn” Our school had a fabulous open day last Wednesday. Great weather, a wonderful roll up of parents, family and community members visiting classrooms and a delicious barbecue for lunch. Then a very entertaining assembly with special Education Week certificates presented to two students per class for their outstanding efforts in their work. Congratulations everyone. And to top the week off, a truly wonderful group of performances at “Education On Show” held at Bellingen High School on Thursday evening from all of our schools who make up the Bellinger Dorrigo Learning Community (BDLC). The BDLC logo is shown as a reminder that all of us do successfully work together sharing resources, expertise and skills for all of the students enrolled in our public education schools which we are all very proud to serve in. Our Learning Community is made up of eight primary schools, two high schools and Cascade Environment Centre. Thank you to Justina Lynch for providing three dozen delicious chocolate muffins for our students afternoon tea after rehearsal at Bellingen High School last Thursday. They were very much appreciated by the students. Yum-eee!!

HEALTH CONCERNS As most of you are aware, there are a lot of students and staff suffering from gastro and flu issues currently. If your child is unwell it is much better for them to stay that extra day or days away from school and get well, rather than coming back to school and perhaps spreading “the bug” to other students and adults around them; or pushing themselves too quickly to get back to school which may prolong the symptoms. Please take advice and guidance from your family doctor and other medical practitioners wherever possible as they are the specialists who can provide the best health solutions.

HEAD LICE There has been some occasions this year when some students have suffered from head lice. A reminder from you to your child about using only their own hat and not sharing their hat with others and vice versa would be appreciated. It is also a good idea for long hair to be tied back. This can go a long way to helping prevent the spread of head lice to others accidentally.

STAGE 3 MEGA RAFFLE Finally, the moment that all ticket holders of the Mega Raffle have been eagerly waiting for arrived! The Stage 3 excursion fundraising mega raffle was drawn last Friday afternoon. The first order of the day was to congratulate and present a wonderful prize to the student who sold the most tickets - this was Makaylah Cavanagh-Rose who managed to sell $420 worth of tickets. A great effort by Makaylah and her family! She won a stand-alone basketball hoop and ball. Then began the draw of the kindly donated prizes. The major prize of two nights at the Meridian Resort at Old Bar was won by Cornwell Family. There were many excited winners as the draw went on. Congratulations to all! Just a few of the lucky winners can be seen pictured below. On behalf of myself and Miss Wallace, and all the Stage 3 students attending the excursion we would like to sincerely thank every individual and the businesses who generously donated prizes or money to the raffle, and of course the many people from all around our school and community who bought tickets. Over the entire fundraising campaign, we have raised approximately $6000 - an amazing effort! We greatly appreciate all the support. Mr Patterson

NEWS FROM OUR COMMUNITY LIAISON OFFICER JENNY LUXON

SPOTLIGHT ON 3/4R CLASS TEACHER:      Miss Reid NUMBER OF STUDENTS: 32 P.E is always a sought after subject in our class. On Monday afternoon, we learn new ball skills. On Wednesday, we play fitness games and on Thursday we learn the skills of a major game. This term 3/4R has started a 10 week unit on how to play lawn bowls. The kit was donated by the Urunga Bowling Club a couple of years ago. It has had plenty of use since its arrival. Children learn the basics and then put these skills into playing small games. We hope to visit the bowling club later in the term to put our skills to the test. In Term 4, we will start learning how to play golf using the Jack Newton resource kit. We have also continued to work hard with learning new dance skills each week.

In Sport for the first 5 weeks of the term we are playing soccer and for the last 5 weeks we will be learning how to play tee ball.

In Computer lessons, students are starting to research an explorer of their choice and they have to give an oral presentation later in the term.

In Science, 3/4R will be starting a unit on temperature. The students will enjoy doing simple and fun experiments using the thermometers.

One of 3/4R's favourite subjects is visiting the library each week. They are shown new and exciting books that they can borrow. The students will continue to learn about Australia's Places - states and territories, capital cities and regional centres, rivers, deserts and Australian islands.

In Drama, so far this year we have played drama games and we have learnt about mime techniques. This term we are combining our skills practising small plays, 3/4R look forward to their assembly item in week 8. We have lots of visitors and aides to our class on a daily basis and we thank everybody for helping out in lots of different ways.

PSSA SENIOR GIRLS KNOCKOUT BASKETBALL ROUND 4 The Urunga PSSA Senior Girls’ Basketball team travelled to Port Macquarie to take on Hastings Public School. We got off to a flying start with an 8 – 4 lead. Some crafty dribbling and great passing lead to some quick points. Sumara lead the way with her first shot on goal being a perfect swish, nothing but net. This gave the girls positive momentum as they battled hard throughout the rest of the match. It came down to the fourth quarter as we were up by two points at the break, and with the points coming from both ends it came right down to the last 30 seconds. The girls defended their hearts out trying to stop Hastings from scoring and winning the rebounds so that we held onto possession. As the buzzer rang we held on by 2 points to win the match. All the girls should be extremely proud of their efforts and sportsmanship. Our round 5 match will be against Kororo Public School. Mr Patterson - Coach
