IMPORTANT DATES From the Principal’s...

15
Dear Parents and Students, I hope this letter finds you enjoying your sum- mer, whether it is spending time with family, taking a trip, or just staying cool at home. Amazingly, it is already time to gear-up for the new school year. We have been very busy here this summer planning and preparing for the 2016-2017 school year. On Thursday, August 11th, Mission Oak will open the doors marking its ninth year serving and educating the stu- dents of Tulare, Tipton, and Pixley. The first bell will ring at 7:55 a.m. and all students should be in class by 8:00 a.m. This past year we focused on improving student attendance. Research shows that students who miss just two or three days a month are at-risk of failure and potentially dropping out. Mission Oak students improved their attendance from 95.52% to 96.82%, an increase of 1.3%. We appreciate the students and parents who made attendance a priority as well. Our dropout rate and graduation rates are improving as a result. Another way to assist your student, aside from making sure he or she comes to school, is to stay involved in your student’s education. Mis- sion Oak provides a number of ways to stay informed and be an active participant in your student’s success. I encourage you to look through this newsletter, the forthcoming student packet, and the school website to find the infor- mation on how to log into ParentLink, Naviance Family Connection, and Aeries Student Info Portal. These online resources will assist you in supporting your student throughout their high school years. In addition to the online resources, parents have a number of opportunities to be involved by participating in Freshman Orientation, Back- to-School Night, PIQE, AP Info night, College Night, etc. Also, becoming a booster club member is not only of value to your student but the entire Mission Oak family. If you are inter- ested in becoming active in the booster club please contact the front office for more infor- mation. I am looking forward to seeing you at many events throughout the upcoming school year. Let it REIGN! It is district policy to notify parents and guardians of Mission Oak High School modified closed campus plan at the beginning of each school year.

Currently, the policy states that freshman and sophomores shall remain on campus during the lunch hour unless permitted to leave by the school administration. Parents and guardians may request permission for their ninth and tenth grade students to go home for lunch, provided adult su-pervision is present.

Juniors and seniors who are in “good standing” are allowed to go off campus during the lunch break. The good standing criteria is based upon the student’s behavior and their school attendance. Eleventh and twelfth grade students who fail to maintain good attendance or discipline records may have their off campus privilege suspended. Please note, “good standing” includes academic performance.

In order for juniors and seniors to receive off-campus privileges during lunch, juniors and seniors must maintain a minimum progress toward meeting the high school graduation requirements prescribed by the Board. Minimum progress toward graduation shall include all courses taken by the student and be based on the following:

Juniors:

Accumulate 100 units by the beginning of the first semester of the junior year; or

Accumulate 130 units by the beginning of the second semester of the junior year

Seniors:

Accumulate 160 units by the beginning of the first semester of the senior year; or

Accumulate 190 units by the beginning of the second semester of the senior year

The governing board of the Tulare Joint Union High School District, pursuant to Section 44808.5 of the Education Code, has decided to permit the pupils in good standing enrolled at Mission Oak High School to leave the school grounds during the lunch period.

Section 4408.5 of the Education Code further states: “Neither the school district nor any officer or employee thereof shall be liable for the conduct or safety of any pupil during such time as the pupil has left the school grounds pursuant to this section.”

If you would like to receive these reports, please be sure that you put your email in the contact information you fill out for the counseling office. If you have changed your email recently, please update it. It will help us to help your children. Thank you.

Dear Hawk Families, in its short history Mission Oak has developed a positive culture and

high standard of excellence. We are looking to further enhance the positive academic

and behavioral environment for everyone at Mission Oak High School. As a staff and stu-

dent body, we are devoting much time to collaborate on the details of a School-wide Posi-

tive Behavioral Interventions & Supports (PBIS) framework, which will be fully implemented

on the first day of the 2016-2017 school year. Part of this process includes developing and teaching specific

behavioral expectations to our students. These behaviors will be positively reinforced throughout the school

for the remainder of your student’s high school career at Mission Oak. We expect all of our students to REIGN (Respect, Excel,

Integrity Give Back and Network) in every thing they do. We want to encourage students to REIGN in and

out of Mission Oak. What does it mean to Respect, Excel, Integrity, Give Back and Network?

We encourage each family to have this discussion. Additionally, we need parents/students

willing to act as representatives on our REIGN Council. We recognize

the importance of working as partners with families and want your in-

put and involvement as we strive to create the best possible school

experience for your child. If you are interested or would like more infor-

mation, please call the school at 687-7308. Thanks for all of your sup-

port. We are looking forward to Mission Oak to continue to REIGN!

Dress Code Information for High School Students

Our district campuses encourage students to dress appropriately for school and enforce a dress code for all high school students. Research

has shown that student dress and appearance affect student attitude and conduct and that appropriate grooming and dress are a part of the

learning process. We understand that students and their parents freely choose a style of dress that reflects the student's individuality, but

we also believe that there are standards of appropriateness in grooming so not to distract from the educational process. If you have any

questions regarding the dress code policy, please contact the high school administration at your convenience. It is important to note that the

dress code shall apply at school and at all school-sponsored activities.

The following guidelines are intended to define appropriate student attire:

Student dress and appearance shall not be disruptive/hazardous to the safety of anyone in the school.

Any clothes or styles of dress that may cause a threat, have a negative effect, or disrupt the educational process will not be permitted.

No student may wear clothing that contains words that are suggestive or has suggestive double meanings of lewdness, obscenity or

vulgarity.

Clothing advertising alcohol, drug or tobacco products is prohibited.

Any apparel, jewelry, accessory, notebook, backpack, or manner of grooming, which,

by virtue of its color, arrangement, trademark or any other attribute, denotes mem-

bership in gangs, advocates drug use, violence, disruptive behavior or is offensive is

prohibited. A behavior contract is enforced based on gang associated activities.

See-through, midriff, fishnet blouses, spaghetti strap tops (straps must be one 1 1/2” or

wider), low cut, revealing tops and muscle shirts that are cut low under the arm are

prohibited.

Shirts must be worn at all school activities including sporting events. Bare midriffs will

not be allowed.

All shorts and skirts must be an appropriate length, mid-thigh or longer. Biker shorts

shall not be worn as outer garments.

Bandannas are not allowed at school or at school-sponsored events.

neck, draped over the shoulder, or hanging from the pocket.

ball-style hats, knit caps, beanies, bandannas, hair nets, and hoods.

ed up while in the classroom. These hats must be: Free of any type of logo or writing, Solid white or khaki color, Removed upon enter-

ing building.

loops.

TJUHSD Dress Code

The Tulare Joint Union High School District encourages students to dress appropriately for school. All clothing shall be neat,

clean and acceptable in repair and appearance and shall be worn within the bounds of decency, safety, and good taste as deemed

appropriate by school administration. Please use the following guidelines of acceptable and not acceptable shorts when purchasing

back to school clothing.

Tulare Joint Union High School District Rules to Ride the School Bus

The district is anxious to provide as much opportunity as is economically feasible for students who reside a long distance from campus to

attend school and participate in school activities. The district operates an extensive transportation system to transport students to and

from school and to many activities away from campus. PLEASE NOTE THAT CHANGES HAVE BEEN MADE TO THE BUS SCHEDULES

FOR THE SEMESTER THAT MAY EFFECT YOUR STUDENT. Bus service is provided to:

• Students who live more than two miles walking distance from school

• Students who face hazardous walking conditions

• Students in certain special education programs

• Students enrolled in a special education program not offered at the local school campus

All bus riders are required to have their ID and a "pass" to ride the school bus. This pass is in the form of a sticker placed

on their student body ID card and the sticker will be provided by the bus driver. It is very important to note that no student will be

permitted to ride any bus but their own, without a note signed by the Principal / Assistant Principal or Admin. Staff. Please note

that students who receive permission to attend a school outside their attendance area must provide their own transportation to and

from school. NO STUDENT WILL RIDE A BUS WITHOUT THEIR ID AND A PASS. THIS WILL BE ENFORCED.

When the Bus is a No Show If you are reasonably sure that the delay is not due to weather conditions, please allow at least 15 minutes before calling the district

transportation department (688-2021 ext 235 or 238). A bus may be delayed due to traffic conditions or mechanical problems.

Late Buses in the Afternoon for Athletics and After-School Programs One late bus will depart from Tulare Western at 5:50p.m. and one from Mission Oak at 5 :55 p.m. These buses will meet a 3rd late

bus at Tulare Union and all 3 buses will depart from Tulare Union at 6 :00 pm daily.

These buses are for student athletes who remain after school for sports practice or students who stay after school with permission for

tutoring or after-school detention or extra or co-curricular activities (such as Drama or Mock Trial). The student athletes must have a

sticker affixed to their ID Card, which may be obtained from their current coach. The sticker will change with each sports season.

The student participating in extra or co-curricular activities must have a pass to ride the late bus, which may be obtained from their

Counselor or Assistant Principal. These passes are yellow and are provided by the Transportation department to the school site. All

bus riders must have their ID card with them at all times to board the late bus.

Transportation Schedules Please review the schedules: our changes may effect your student!!

These are the daily morning bus schedules for Tulare, Pixley, Tipton and cross-town school buses between the high

schools. It is important to note that times and stops are subject to change. If you have any questions about the bus

stops, please contact the transportation department at 688-2021extension 2023. Students are REQUIRED to be at

their bus stop at least TEN ( 10) minutes prior to bus arrival.

2023 or 2009).
