FORGING PATHWAYS OUT OF POVERTYONE RELATIONSHIP AT A TIME

Dear Friends of Starfish Initiative,

The 2018 academic year for Starfish Initiative was certainly one of our finest thanks to the incredible commitment from the greater Indianapolis community. Our staff of 8 full-time team members leveraged the “heart, hand & brain equity” of our corporate allies, college partners and hundreds of volunteer mentors.

Starfish provided 425 talented, yet vulnerable Marion County high schoolers our distinctive 3Cs programming – College readiness, Career exploration and Character development. This time-tested curriculum offers a pathway out of poverty for these extraordinary youth toward achieving the American Dream – making a better way for their families and communities.

Most importantly, alongside Starfish programming was the contribution of over 26,000 hours of one-on-one mentoring from 425 Starfish-trained

volunteers. These interactions are more than a feel-good effort; this is college-educated talent investing in our collective future by preparing Indy’s teens for the rigors of college and professional careers by imparting bridge-to-work life skills.

Please peruse our 2018 Impact Report. While we can readily quantify the many college enrollments, millions of scholarship dollars earned and best-in-class college persistence of our graduates; we cannot measure the value of the 1000 + genuine and durable intergenerational relationships that have been cultivated that cross place, race, economics and identity.

Please consider joining us in 2019 as a community investor –donate or become a mentor!Unearned adversity blocks potential: Starfish unleashes it!

SCHOLAR DREAMSStarfish Scholar Hau is a freshmen at Roncalli High School. Hau believes he is capable of motivating and helping others achieve their own successes. “I want to give my best effort and all I’ve got in my power to progress in school. Then, I want to have the chance to be able to go to college to get my own bachelor’s degree and have an engineering career. Overall, I want to help the world with my career any way I can to make the world more suitable.”

MENTOR CONTRIBUTIONYoni is Hau’s Mentor. Both Yoni and his wife are committed to mentoring Starfish Scholars. Matched since early August 2018, Yoni’s decision to become a Mentor was due in large part to his wife’s positive experience. “She has told me how much she enjoys spending time with her mentee and how excited she is preparing her for college.” Yoni is an Attorney with the Marion County Public Defender Agency. “I wanted to volunteer more in my community and I believe Starfish’s outreach is greatly needed. Once I heard about the lack of male mentors and how they are desperately needed, I jumped at the chance to help out.”

Yoni recently helped Hau achieve one of his goals to meet Holocaust Survivor, Eva Mozes Kor, at the Candles Holocaust Museum. “So we checked out the museum and she gave a really moving and powerful lecture about her life. It was definitely a great experience and great meeting her,” said Hau. Hau presented his original drawing to Ms. Kor, a cool portrait of her. She loved the portrait and signed it.

His mentor made it happen!

Thank you to our great Scholars and Mentors!

Yoni (Mentor), Eva Mozes Kor, & Hau (Scholar)
