D ata P r i va c y D ayData Privacy Day, held annually in the United States on Jan. 28, is an extension of Data Protection Day celebrated in the European Union. This year’s theme, “Respecting Privacy, Safeguarding Data and Enabling Trust,” commemorates the 1981 signing of the first legally binding, international treaty dealing with privacy and data protection.

Building tremendous momentum over the past 10 years under the leadership of the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA), Data Privacy Day’s broad range of stakeholders and NCSA staff created press materials, privacy resources, shareable collateral, blogs, social media activities, a comprehensive media toolkit and contributed news articles to top-tier outlets. In addition, with the support of sponsors and partners, Data Privacy Day 2018 was officially celebrated at a daylong event livestreamed from LinkedIn’s offices in San Francisco, CA, on Jan. 25. This unique opportunity – basically a privacy boot camp – showcased fast-paced, cutting-edge discussions and TED-style talks with leading experts focused on what business and consumers must know about privacy. Topics included “Looking into a Crystal Ball: What Your Data Says About You,” “Five Things You Can Do to Manage Your Privacy Now” and “Staying Competitive – Why Privacy is Good for Your Business.”

As a result of these broad-sweeping tactics, Data Privacy Day 2018 experienced significant growth, with the overall estimated reach1 increasing 26% from 820 million in 2017 to 1 billion+ in 2018. In fact, there was 52% increase in media stories in nationally recognized publications including CNET, Forbes, MarketWatch, Mashable, Gizmodo, SC Magazine, PC Mag, CBS News Radio and TechRepublic. The following report shares additional Data Privacy Day 2018 details and successes.

Fast FactsNoteworthy highlights from Data Privacy Day 2018:• 595 organizations registered as Data Privacy Day 2018 Champions – an increase of 32% over last year’s

450. The individual Champions program grew as well, with a total of 620 supporters in comparison to 213 in 2017 – a 191% increase.

• The 2018 Data Privacy Day event was streamed live from LinkedIn’s headquarters in San Francisco via YouTube, Periscope and Facebook Live. The stream has been watched more than 5,500 times on YouTube and Facebook Live. On Periscope, there were more than 6,200 viewers.

1. Reach is calculated using unique visitors, which refer to the number of individuals requesting pages from a website during a given month. The measurement of reach can be the result of original media articles or press releases that have been distributed. Meltwater, NCSA’s media intelligence platform, is provided these numbers by SimilarWeb, who took over as Meltwater’s metrics partner in January 2017. As a result of this new partnership, the Data Privacy Day 2017 results were recalculated for this report to ensure accurate year-over-year comparisons.

Similar to the organic growth experienced with National Cyber Security Awareness Month 2017, there was strong evidence of Data Privacy Day adoption by a variety of other organizations – which generated an extra layer of generous support to the campaign. Here are a few examples:

• On Jan. 28, the Google search page reminded anyone searching for information online using Google that it was Data Privacy Day and to “Choose the privacy settings that are right for you.” According to Internet Live Stats, “Google now processes over 40,000 search queries every second on average, which translates to over 3.5 billion searches per day and 1.2 trillion searches per year worldwide.”

• Facebook: On Jan. 28 – which is the official Data Privacy Day – Facebook introduced a new education campaign to help everyone understand how data is used on Facebook and how you can manage your own data. In addition, the company announced plans to make core privacy settings easier to find and shared its privacy principles for the first time. The announcement, entitled “Giving You More Control of Your Privacy on Facebook,” was drafted by Facebook’s chief privacy officer, Erin Egan. A link to NCSA’s Data Privacy Day portal was front and center in the first sentence of the piece. In addition, Facebook invited people to use its Privacy Checkup and share privacy tips in education campaigns online.

• Call For Action: Call For Action is an organization that empowers consumers by giving them a voice larger than their own. Volunteer professionals in offices around the world are trained to assist consumers through mediation and education to resolve problems with businesses, government agencies and other organizations. On Jan. 25, the local Call For Action team at the ABC affiliate in the Washington, D.C. area conducted a Data Privacy Day “phone bank” in which nine local privacy experts took calls from more than 60 consumers during a two-hour period about the issue of privacy. Many of the calls addressed data breaches and how to protect oneself. Other hot topics included the dark web, turning on two-factor authentication for different accounts and general privacy advice. In addition, the Call For Action website shared NCSA’s top privacy tips. Ed Bartholme, Call For Action’s executive director, also conducted a broadcast interview with WPRI in East Providence, RI.

• The Social Security Administration (SSA) shared an email with thousands of employees on Jan. 26. NCSA’s Data Privacy Day theme and website were featured prominently alongside a call to action to be privacy smart and to safeguard personal information.

To support this growth, 926 print/online articles ran pre- and post-Data Privacy Day in the U.S. and worldwide – representing a 52% increase over 2017.

Broadcast: One hundred and five radio and broadcast segments featured Data Privacy Day, highlighting NCSA and its partners, and reached more than 3.1 million local viewers.3 This coverage reflected a 243% increase from 2017. This can be attributed to widespread outreach throughout the month and leading into Data Privacy Day 2018 and exceptional partner support in markets across the U.S.

3. Local viewers refer to the estimated national audience, as tallied by Critical Mention, NCSA’s broadcast intelligence platform.

Press Releases and Blog Reach There were 29 unique press releases and 2,576 press release pickups – representing 12% and 37% increases respectively for Data Privacy Day 2018. This increase can be attributed to the overwhelming support of Champions and partners who timed strategic announcements and events for Data Privacy Day and helped generate attention to key privacy issues for consumers and businesses.

This year, NCSA worked with Data Privacy Day stakeholders to release two timely press releases – one directed at consumers and the other at businesses. Fifty-one media outlets picked up the consumer release (representing 7,988,495 unique visitors), and 151 outlets picked up the business release (representing 13,683,157 unique visitors).

NCSA published a total of 42 privacy blog posts – compared to 24 in 2017 – on staysafeonline.org leading up to, on and immediately following Data Privacy Day.

Web traffic StaySafeOnline.org was visited 72,316 times in the month of January 2018 (a 7% decrease from January 2017), with 56,097 users visiting the site (a 12% decrease from January 2017). The slight decreases are likely in part due to Data Privacy Day falling on a Sunday and less activity than normal happening online on the day itself. Additionally, there were 177,247 pageviews on staysafeonline.org in January 2018 – a 13% increase over January 2017.
