Securely attached for good resultsThe more securely an impact recorder is attached to the transformer, the less risk there is of receiving inaccurate recordings. A device attached by magnet could record its own vibrations and provide under certain circumstances inaccurate measuring results. For this reason we recommend screwing the Cargolog® to the transformer. It has proved useful for transformer manufacturers to add such a mounting device during tank construction. This means that the im-pact recorder is simple to mount using just 4 M6 screws. There are special attachments for mounting in the inside of the transformer – these depend on whether or not this is filled with oil.

The Cargolog® can be mounted either vertically or horizontally, as required. If not mounted horizontally, the tilt angle is calculated accordingly.

Thanks to its 5-meter long antenna the GPS system can make a sa-tellite connection if the registration unit is in an unfavourable loca-tion. There is a special opening in the protective aluminium housing to accommodate this antenna. Please do not forget, that the longer the antenna, the weaker the GPS signal is.

A clear option: GPS (Global Positioning System)An example: You notice in the port of destination, after transport by truck and ship, that the LED for acceleration has lit up, in other words a preset limit value has been exceeded. As you can see in the analysis software, Cargolog® has recorded the shock event with its maximum value and duration and in addition to the time also in-dicates the exact position where the event occurred. Not only does this help clarify the question of who is at fault where liability and insurance is concerned, it also helps you to detect weak points in the transportation system. While setting the parameters you can decide yourself whether the GPS signals should be sent when specific limit values are reached or at fixed time intervals. You can also see later in the software when signals were sent.

Generally GPS reception is reduced or even impossible when the transformer is in a closed space – this also includes below-deck loading during transport by sea. However there is research underway for so-called “Tracking functions”. There will also be the option, if required, of receiving event messages directly on your mobile phone via GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications).

Tried and tested in practiceMessko offers with Cargolog® a device that is specific to the requirements of its customers. The concept has proved successful in a multitude of industrial applications: a compact device, without any moving parts, with the lowest possible power consumption, easy to use and made exceptionally well of top-quality materials. So it is of no surprise that companies such as the paper manufacturer Stora Enso or ABB are glad to have these impact recorders in operation.

Keeping on eye on everythingYour transformers are exposed to a lot of potential sources of damage while in transit. Messko offers a device for transport monitoring that will ensure you know exactly what has happened while your trans-former was on the road. This digital impact recorder, also known as a data logger or shock recorder, records all shocks and knocks with a time stamp. These accelerations are saved together with their time sequence in all three axes. In addition the recorder measures the tilt angle as well as temperature sequence and humidity. LEDs indicate if individually preset limit values are exceeded. The events can then be displayed and analysed easily using the comprehensive visuali-zation software.

At all events the right solution A lot can happen during the transhipping of transformers, whether from the rail, ship or truck. The LED indicators quickly show you whether limit values have been exceeded. With the integrated GPS function (optional) you can immediately pinpoint where the event occurred - with an impressive accuracy of down to 10 metres. Special batteries ensure that the power supply is maintained even in the case of lengthy shipment times, over a period of up to one year. The inter-nal memory registers up to 38,800 events that cannot be overwritten or deleted by any unauthorised persons during transport.

Two or even three impact recorders are often needed for the trans-portation of transformers. For this purpose Messko offers special attachments for mounting on the active part of the transformer. On request you will receive additional aluminium housing for external mounting as part of the delivery.

The Cargolog® recorders are of course well suited for other appli-cations apart from the monitoring of transformer transportation. The recorders have also been used for such applications as monitoring the transport of liquid gas units and large rolls of paper.

Features• Three-dimensional acceleration measurement

(X/Y/Z): +/-2.5 G; +/-10 G; +/-25 G ; +/-100 G with a 1.0 or 0.1G resolution

• Measurement of the acceleration time in ms• Frequency range 2-30Hz or up to 300Hz• Tilt angle 0 – 90° in X and Y direction• Temperature values (operating range -40° C to +80° C) • Relative humidity (accuracy +/-3 %)• Visual display via 5 LEDs• Windows-based software for setting parameters

and for analysis• Data transfer to a laptop/PC via USB• Optional: protective housing with protection class IP65• Optional: integrated GPS receiver/antenna

The Cargolog® conceptThe core of the Cargolog is the registration unit equipped with sen-sors, data logger and LEDs plus housing for the battery. Depending on the installation (internally in/externally on the transformer) it is mounted with an attachment unit. For protection purposes, this can be installed in an aluminium housing.

A communication module with an infrared interface is simply placed on top of the registration unit for data transfer. A standard USB jack is used for connection to the laptop/PC. The software provided on CD is used for setting parameters and for visualisation.

The GPS antenna is equipped with a magnet on the bottom so that it can simply be placed on the registration unit. The antenna can be attached as required.

You want to see what is going onThe analysis software will help you to see quickly what has happe-ned during transportation. Shocks, vibrations, temperature ranges and humidity are indicated by the different coloured curves. Using Drag&Drop functions you can, for example, set time intervals and scales quite simply and can change from a horizontal to a vertical view. Fading out parameters or zooming into specific area is also quick and easy to do. To make comparisons easier, it is also possible to display measurements along side or above each other. A simple click on the mouse will also allow you see the exact values, for ex-ample, and if required the GPS position. Any areas that are relevant for you can, of course, quite simply be printed out. In this way you get a one-page report of events in addition to the recorder data and preset limit values. You can also export all values to Excel as text files and save your standard settings for applications at a later date.
