Notes from the Principal: Storyline As most of your know, ICES does its best to be authentic and intentional in terms of creating learning experiences that not only help students grow, but also helps students recognize God’s fingerprints and learn to glorify God in all aspects of their lives. We have not only tried to educate our students through the lens of Teaching for Transformation, but have also tried to share with our broader community as to what this means (as an example see pages 7-8). A big part of the Teaching for Transformation approach is the usage of Biblical throughlines. We as a staff, work at weaving throughlines through all aspects of student study. We want to give students opportunities to be active learners and not passive recipients of knowledge. As Nicholas Wolterstorff states: “It is nothing but a pious wish and grossly unwarranted hope that students trained to be passive and non-creative in school will suddenly, upon graduation, actively contribute to the formation of Christian culture” With the aforementioned rationale and quote in mind, we as a staff have worked hard to provide learning experiences that allow students to be active in developing and using their gifts. This is where Formational Learning Experiences (FLEx) fits in. Things like inviting Syrian students to go ice fishing; using statistics to show injustices in the world and thinking of solutions; visiting, befriending and interviewing seniors; doing a bake sale to raise money for Compassion Canada; writing and delivery Christmas cards to people in the neighborhood etc. all fit into and are products of this philosophy. However, there are other things that need to be mentioned. First off, our students and staff are not perfect. Students make mistakes and struggle with different aspects of their lives both in and out of school. Our staff does its best to encourage/hold accountable in these situations. We also need to reflect on the reason for engaging in things like FLEx projects. As much as we want to build the self esteem of students, we want to be conscious of contextualizing our learning activities. The purpose of them is not “hey, look at us!” Instead, we want our students to understand that following God’s call is not purely a cognitive exercise. We are created by God, and called to use our gifts to forward His story and not our own. This is the concept of “Storyline”. We recognize that God makes us unique and helps us grow in the people He created us to be, to serve Him through our work and through our leisure and rest. Staffing Notes: Mrs. Dana Hesha will be team teaching with Mrs. Carolyn Kruisselbrink in grade 1 for 50% of

the time. With the other 50% of her time she will be taking a third grade 2 class (made up of

students from Mrs. Skidmore’s class and Mrs. Vanden Heuvel’s class) to lead them in literacy

and numeracy learning activities. The reason for this breakdown is the relatively small

amount of grade 1 students compared to the large amount of grade 2 students. We did not

want to go with a grade 1 / 2 class as we feel having a combined grade class in the lower

grades is more difficult to facilitate.

Due to our grade 4 & 5 student numbers being very similar to last year’s numbers, we will

once again be running a grade 4, a grade 4/5 and a grade 5 class. However, we were able to

move Mrs. Peter’s teaching time from 35% to 50%. This will allow us to split the grade 4/5

class more frequently than we did in the past year.

ICS LADIES AUXILIARY

Another busy year of fundraising for the two ICS campuses has come to an end.

Our events consist of the monthly hot lunch program, the annual spring roast beef

dinner and helping a local restaurant with catering.

Thanks to this year’s efforts and your generous donations, we were able to purchase the

following items for the two campuses:

For the Elementary: $19,000 in total was spent for the following : horseshoe tables and chairs for

various classrooms- $5,000, Music – 10 music stands, 2 sets timpani mallets-$600, clipboards-

Scientists in the classrooms-$1,600, Wiggle and wobble cushions, Items for the science room, gr1- 4

Ipads-$2,700, KG - 20 wipe boards/clipboards, SD cards for cameras, Specialty headphones x 20-$360,

Library - misc items , Gr 2 chair pockets, Variety of aids for math/ literacy programs

For the High School: $12,000 in total was spent for the following: Foosball table-$800 , Help towards

the Outdoor Ed trip-$1,000, Home-Ec - 4 KitchenAid Mixers- $2,600 Music – Bass Clarinet – $2,625

Sports – Volleyball system-nets and poles -$5,500.

Accumulated surplus money from fundraising during the past years was set aside for Middle school

outdoor recreation area- $15.000

Every year, we donate cash for the grab bag items to the Bazaar committee

In June, every year, we offer the Hilda Van’tland scholarship, of $500, to go to a student showing a

heart for volunteering that goes above and beyond. This may include volunteering at the Hospital,

Senior’s homes, BFM, Soup Kitchen, Food Bank or Homeless Shelter to name a few.

ICS Ladies Auxiliary would like to express their heartfelt thanks to everyone who helped make our

fundraising projects such a success again this year:

1. On behalf of the hot lunch coordinators - A huge thank you to all those parents who so willing support

our hot lunch program monthly and to those parents who volunteer to help prepare and serve the

various lunches that we offered this year at both the ICES and ICHS.

This year, in January, we began ordering hot lunch thru Cash Online. Thank you for participating in this

as it has made it very streamlined now. There were a few hiccups but they have now been addressed.

So, we will do this again in September.

Thank you to the two society supporters who have donated money this year to buy the needed ground

burger as it is a tremendous help to help keep lunch costs affordable for all.

2. On behalf of the Roast Beef dinner committee, we wish to thank all the society members and friends

for coming out and so generously supporting our annual Roast Beef dinner, April 24. This year we raised

$13,000 after costs !! A HUGE thanks to you, all.

Thank you to all the students who volunteered so enthusiastically in setting up the tables and chairs

Finally, thank you to all those parents, teachers, ICHS graduates and current students who helped to

serve and cleanup after the dinner. It was so appreciated.

3. We hosted PCCE Teacher’s Convention, again, this year- An opportunity we have once every 5 years.

Thank you to all who helped out in anyway with setup and serving. A heartfelt Thank you to Grace

Holtrop-Creative Cooks- who supplied all the delicious baking for those 2 days !!

4. We, again, helped Country Kitchen with a catering job for a local High School Grad.

Because of all of YOU, 2016-2017 was another successful year.

Our first meeting for the new school term will be September 11, 2017 DV.
